Subject description: a place for testing new kernels in Puppy...

Very Happy Hello,
A lot of development is occurring in the Puppy world...
New kernels are being "petted up" for use with the Woof build system...
I figure a central location for testing them is in order...
Till now the EZWoof thread, and the IcePuppy thread have been the only place to post these...
So I`ll kick it off... Cool

Puppy Lupu-5.29-2.6.38.4
Built with playdayz EZWoof 5.25
Linux kernel 2.6.38.4...(thanks to pemasu)

D/L the ISO and md5sum from the meownplanet link in my signature... Username puppy Password linux...

Testing release....Bugs will occur...Report them....
Known issues....
Alsa problems...(see the EZWoof 5.25 thread for remedies)...

Flash online...
Dont try to fullscreen online flash videos...crashes X...

Firefox 3.03 is installed in the menu, but not set as default..

I`m guessing this thread could fill up with new pups for testing quickly, as EZWoof makes this sort of testing really easy...Some of the newer kernels have some really exciting possibilities.....

Barry keeps patch sets for each kernel that he builds... comes in really handy in case others want to do a rebuild-fix. A tarball of the patches should be small enough to post here. (i'd like the 2.6.38 patches to build on if someone has them)

Giving your 529-2.6.38.4 a quick run live pfix=ram on my main Linux box. Other than the expected "no sound" things appear to be working well. Display (1440x900) and internet working fine. Tried your alsa fix, no help here but I'll try the next release.

Attempted to watch a Youtube video fullscreen....didn't crash X here but got a solid white screen and Firefox crashed. Just restarted FF and went on.

Ethernet controller : Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
Multimedia audio controller : VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
VGA compatible controller : nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev c1)

I built an Spup with a little earlier kernel (2.6.38.2).
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=66897

There aren't as many problems with these builds as I was expecting and 529 appears to be pretty darn solid too.
Good job. Smile

Very Happy Hello,
OK, I rebuilt 5.29 with these changes..
Didnt strip...SCSI, big modems, etc left in..
Built in Firefox 4.01, Intel video drivers...(xorg.high)
xcompmgr, ndiswrapper module, fotoxx, x-toys, pupxscreensaver-5.13..
Left themes, icons, etc as defaults...

Running from it frugal ATM...
Retrovol works on first boot...
FF4 + Intel driver = Fullscreen video (smooth)
mtpaintscreenshot works great...captured desktop, and youtube video playing, clear as can be...

Only bug so far....
I accidentally named it 5.39 instead of 5.29... Embarassed

At my sig link below as...
lupu-539-SCSI.iso
# md5sum lupu-539-SCSI.iso
709f2ed9bc92e2f801486669ce6151ff lupu-539-SCSI.iso

191mb....47mb of that is the screensaver, which I will leave out of my next build, which I will shrink as much as I can...
Jay...

Very Happy Hello,
During the build, I went into sandbox3/rootfscomplete/etc/initd and erased "alsa" then put the alsamixer-fix script in /root/Startup... Very Happy
I have not run alsa setup, just using the OOTB sound and retrovol...
I do wish I had left the 47mb of screensavers out... Embarassed
But they all work, glx included...
This build scores about 200fps faster than most Pups at glxgears OOTB...
Well, of to work....be back later...
Jay...
@EDIT:
5.39 has xcompmgr built it...
For those wishing to enable compositing transparency, and fading in and out of windows in 5.39...

1. Add the Section/EndSection below to your xorg.conf (at the end of it works)

Quote:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

2. Add this to .xinitrc before "rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin"

Quote:
xcompmgr -I 0.05 -O 0.15 -f -n & # composite, fade-in/out & transparency

Then restart X....

Enabling composite/fade actually increased my glxgears score by 100fps when the window was in focus!!!
And Flash videos fullscreen fine with composite on...

Jay...

thank you very much. This is a masterpiece. I think this is the kind of news that everyone in the 525 world wanted to hear. I know that the ICE world has been following this news and evelopment.

Your efforts now makes the "PUP525" variants of Puppy capable of running on every PC with 512+ RAM, from Pentium II to present day processors using this single PUP539. A breakthru for PUP525 users.

I have 3 machines that have SCSI drives, so this approach covers my ATA, SATA, and SCSI hardware that sit in my collection. This one distro will cover all machines in the arsenal. (I've always wondered why pulling out SCSI drivers was ever viewed as an accomplishment before as they had no operational impact when system is running? Even though it is not, I think someone called it bloat, thus killed it! But ... .)

The 47MB that you mention only affects download. There is NO 47MB bump in the running system.

If I were racing the old PUP525 against this on a 512MB RAMs, this, not only, appears to beat 525, but "laps" it, as well. This investigation and the resulting effort should make all of us proud of your contribution and you..

Very Happy Hello,
@gcmartin,
Thank you...But it is all about Puppy...
I am all for the minimalistic approach, but if you are going to go that way, then go the other way as well..
New kernels bring new functions and abilities to Puppy that need to be experimented with....
No, these new test releases probably are not "stable" as of yet...(Although IcePuppy `006 has, with the 2.6.38.4 kernel, been VERY stable, dare I say "rock solid", for me...)
And so far, so has 5.39...

As for my 2.6.38.4 T2 build....semi success...
I have a running desktop, partly functional...very orange...LOL
Apparently dbus failed inbuild...
I did get a functional desktop....
But no net/multimedia/Firefox/etc...as of yet... Very Happy

But at 81 mb...it is a good start....
After I get T2 working, I hope to get Arch Woofed....
Gotta find out their repo url....
Did an archpup about 2 years ago, (whenever Woof first hit the scene), but it was only semi functional..
However, the repo worked, at least I think...
I was able to D/L Firefox 2.0.12 from the arch repos, and it installed...but it wouldnt run, from xulrunner errors..
Dbus seems to be the stumbling block, for me at least...

PS...try enabling composite as per the above instructions..
Let me know your results...
I`m considering enabling it as default at boot...
The fading in and out and transparency look awesome...
And those who know me know "eye candy", as long as it is functional, is great by me...
P.A.W had composite and fading in and out 2 years ago...

"Bleeding edge".....yea....lets go there....

@ personal snivel...
Why has X-Toys not made it into the PPM yet... Rolling Eyes LOL
MultiPup is still rough around the edges...but X-Toys is too cute to leave out...And as soon as pupxscreensaver 5.13 is perfected, it should be available as well...
Who decides this stuff anyhow???....
I jest thee. all in good fun, ...
Jay...

Download lupu539, PXE boot via Netboot (JamesBond), everything works....fast!

The sound icon on the tray should probably be removed or should be upgraded to launch retrovol or there should be a Menu > Multimedia > Sound (Retrovol) with instructions to 'UnMute" As you and everyone is aware, opening a Terminal and typing "retrovol" allows the user to "Unmute" the system sound.

This ISO works on 4 PCs/laptop with 1-2GB RAM; the reports are similar to those from ICE testings done previously. Fast on each's desktop without ANY hiccups. Great work for PUP525 community.

Hope this helps
P.S. Will test SCSI usage next week.

Subject description: fail to mount

Hi All

puppyluvr:
Just checked 539 looks good so far, I did find this aside from the sound thing.
Could not mount cd data disk in either drive, in the three desktop machines I tried. However it would mount cd's with iso's?

HP Pavilion Intel p4 3.0ghz 512ram
Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616E
Sony dvd rw dru-840A

Asus Athlon xp 2600 2.75ghz 1.536ram drive
hl-dt-st dvd-rw gwa-4082b
Asus cd-s520/4a

Athlon xp1800 1.5mhz 512ram
LITEON CD ROM LTNS526D
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D

Edit: Also was able to mount and play both music and movie cd's and dvd's

had to load VLC for the movies thou.
Hope this is of use!

Keep up the Good work!

Bob

OK, three machines, same result..we`re missing a module/driver somewhere...
I will burn a straight "data" cd in the morning, and find out..
Thanks for catching this..
Very Happy
Oh, and BTW....In Gnomeplayer...
Edit/Preferences/Video Output...
Click "gl"
Sorry, missed that one... Embarassed

Try the compositing stuff above...
I want to see where it works and where it dont...

Please include Video Card / Driver in responses
Ive had "local" reports of ATI/Radeon troubles...
Can anyone confirm this ?
NVidea???

I only included the intel high performance drivers...
I only have one machine up ATM..
But as people tell me what works for them, I`ll include them in the next build...

Running 539 live pfix=ram on my main Linux box.Initial boot had the correct screen resolution(1440x900) but no internet or sound.Running Network Wizard and unmuting the sound took care of those two things.

Just did a quick manual upgrade to Firefox 4.0.1 and no problem at all with fullscreen videos, at least on Youtube.

Same flash I believe, 10.2r153.

Very Happy Hello,
@James C
Try this:
http://www.smokey01.com/pemasu/IcePuppy-008/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.44-2.6.38.4-lupe18.pet
I will include it in the next build if it works for you..
(I have no nvidia box to test it on...)

These drivers are big.... I only want to build in the most needed...dont want a 300mb pup..LOL..
