Grub destroyed when Eee battery ran out [SOLVED]

#1 Post by JacobSimonsen »

Due to my Eee-pc's limited battery-time I have experienced sudden shut-downs and a dead Puppy as a result :( .
I use Lucid 5.2 and know that is knows how much capacity my battery has left. Is it possible to make Puppy make a controlled shut-down of the Eee when battery-capacity reaches a certain low?

I would really like to stick with Puppy, since it is the only distro for me - and I've tried quite a few.

This link adresses a problem similar to mine, and the reply is good but nothing happens when I right-click on the battery-icon, so I don't get access to the Preferences. If I left-click I get an info-box with all the details on the battery...
Is there another way of accessing Battery Preferences?

I'm using the default Openbox- desktop-theme - is that a problem?

How modify battery prefs?

Same problem here. In puppy 525 nothing happens when I right-click the battery icon. And I also would like a controlled shutdown when the battery is too low.

Does somebody know how to access the battery settings?

Maybe 525 and pupeee don't have the same battery monitor applet. Try asking Jemimah if you can't find any information on it.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

@ JacobSimonsen

About your sub title, how is your partition with grub and your puppy formatted? I assume it's ext2.

I would prefer ext3 because it's more stable on improper shutdowns.

Correct - it is ext2

#7 Post by Dromeno »

Yes, it is ext2

and the reason why I need an auto clean shutdown option is that crude shutdowns cause damage to the 2fs, which then needs to be replaced.

In my 4.1 and 4.2 puppies I did not have that problem. Their 2fs files survive any shutdown. Puppy 5.2.5 appears to be less bullet-proof.

JacobSimonsen,
Did you look into the bios settings already?
My laptop gives warnings and does a suspend when battery is below critical.
All through the bios.

On the other hand acpitool can be of help.
If not installed, search for it with the puppy search link in my sig.

Also make sure you use ext3 for partitions and 3fs for the save file.
In case of a brutal power cut, chances are much higher for recovery.

Puppeee power management works

#9 Post by JacobSimonsen »

Actually I don't use Lucid 5.2 anymore due to the fact that I wasn't able to get the power management I wanted. Now I use Puppeee, and I have not had any problems since.

For the sake of fellow posters could you edit the subject of the initial post and add [SOLVED] at he end.

@Béèm

Dromeno has a similar problem, so it's hardly solved.
I just changed puppy-version. If Dromeno thinks it's solved I will gladly change the subject to [SOLVED] :)

This not Dromeno's thread but yours.
I am nor sure if Dromeno has a real issue.
But in any case, you have solved the issue and that's what counts.
Dromeno's environment is different, so he has to open a thread for himself.

So logically as far as etiquette for this forum is concerned, you have to mark it solved.
