Bruce that was very funny! Simple? Only after you told me and to remember these details is not easy.

And what about every newbie reading that now Puppy has Fido and them not curious enough to find where Barry says that only Devs should test Wary with Fido.

But sure maybe not many newbies find out about it so nothing to worry about. I will try it out on either latest Snow or latest Ice puppy then which also has Fido if one want to. But I am in no hurry.

Thanks for telling me how to. So even if I ask Console it will not know if I am in Fido or Root? I guess the easiest way then would be to try to load a htmal file from mnt/home? When in Fido it will not find that file? unless I first use Rox in root but then root maybe open the root FF instead?

I changed my JWM task bar browser instructions to read like this

exec:su -c /opt/firefox/firefox spot

But if I look in opt directory that one is empty. Does this code then create a symlink to firefox or how does it works?

Ooops sorry this is Spot but what about Fido then. How is that one different from Spot?

Perfect example of when and where to use foobar

/opt/firefox/firefox

/foo/bar/firefox

Nooby's job is to check the world wide for all Linux live CDs, small
distros and anything he can install on an NTFS - then report to others
what he learned.

I'm not likely to know about fido for a while because I'm running 5.20
and it doesn't have fido.

In answer to your question. I don't know (but spot works fine).

That was so logical that I got severe head ache now :)

exec:su -c /opt/firefox/firefox spot

maybe then should be
exec:su -c /foobar/foobar/firefox spot

And the word foobar refers to a long text saying. Replace the word foobar with what is the actual place on your system because this code is general to be able to work for everybody and all hardware differ. something :)

Yes I tried to persuade a PCLOS guys yesterday to share his knowledge how to boot PCLOS on NTFS in frugal but most likely none at PCLOS has heard about frugal. or them don't care. or else them would have it up front for everybody to easily find. :)

Nooby,

This is your first day on foobar. By tomorrow it will make perfect sense.
And as a reward for your efforts, you will remember the rest of your life.

One day in my dreams I am sure of that I will code
the Woo Linux for Dummies. The OS that magically
know what you want it to do before you're slow brain
get aware of it even. :)

Hi All,

I would thank Philb for his, the greatest post ever.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 376#517376
If all these idea's came to fruition, puppy having passwords, puppy saying permission denied, having to sudo to change the wallpaper and mount your drives, or install an officially vetted .pet....Would it still be the same puppy that we all love? and the same forum that we all enjoy?
Really true.
Puppy booted live with a cd and pfix=ram is more secure than any installed operating system.
This is also true. To know how to play safe, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 292#662292.
Even booting a frugal that is on the harddrive or on a usb, all it takes is to check the md5 of the puppy.sfs to be as certain of a pristine OS as with the live CD.
This is what I am missing and may be everybody missing. I mean, we need to have this automatically done.
If you're not doing you're internet banking from a live cd, then you really aren't taking security that seriously, what ever operating system you have.
Really. It is equivalent to, not using toilets and shouting, for private parts seen by others.
And however many times you sudo. The same goes to storing credit card numbers on your computer, and important passwords (paypal) in your browser. You shouldn't be doing that on any operating system!!!
Yes, whether we are running as root or non-root privilege, cannot save us.
As to this forum, this is a really friendly and helpful place, an absolute mine of information, solutions and development, where else do you have the devs helping beginners, without dictating to them. It's a genuine open society, and that's a special thing. That people can share .pets for the benefit for everyone is marvelous! Lots of the things that are now part of puppy, started by being posted in the 'applications' section, and were improved by people trying them and giving feedback.
First forum I came across in my 12 yrs computing career, which is so good.

I will link this post in security thread and will suggest some idea which security concerned people(me? ;-)) may find good.

Sincerely,
Srinivas Nayak

...really NOT true. Running spot doesn't mean you can't access all the menu items as before. You don't need to "sudo" to change wallpaper or mount drives...you just click on the icon as before. What you can't do are things like writing to or deleting files outside your area via the terminal that are read only. Running in root overrides "read only" files.

I use a password when my system first boots up; always have and always will. I also encrypt all my password files; nothing "unpuppy" about it.
