I have two computers and both have precise 5.7.1- kernel 3.9.11 - One is a HP 6744y and the other is an old Dell 4600 Pentium 4 2.8GHz. My goal is to have a working wireless on Dell.
When using the wireless usb adapter (RTL8192CU/RTL8188CUS) on the HP, it works like a charm and this is using the built-in driver. When using on Dell, it gets associated with the router but will not go online. Pinging the router doesn't do anything. It literally just sit still.
iwconfig shows the adapter connected to router with speed of 150 Mbps
So I thought I'd check what programs/libraries are installed on the HP and install it as well on Dell but this did not work neither. So at this point, the OS and programs installed on each pc are exactly the same except for FGLRX and P7ZIP which I don't think would cause the adapter not to work.
What am I missing? I don't think I need to download a driver from RealTek website coz I did not have to do that on the HP.

The in-kernel version of RTL8192CU is well-known to be wonky with some adapters. See the (heated) discussion here.
That post has a vendor version of the driver for Precise.
What model adapter are you using?
Please report back.

Aboard 528 I've got a Netis WF2116, ID [0bda:8178] Realtek working with the 8192cu driver from here.
