Pupsave size

#1 Post by puppyluvr »

:D Hello.
I know it says in the wizard not to make your pupsave bigger than 1.8 gb, however, mine is 2.5 gb and working fine. What problems have been reported??

I think it can not be bigger on some filesystems.
Fat16 or so cannot deal with files over 2 GB.
The warning is very old, but even with Puppy 1 I used a 3 GB savefile on a fat32 drive.

FAT limits can be found here:
wikipedia - File Allocation Table

In summary, for both FAT16 and FAT32, maximum filesize is (4 GB - 1 byte) or partition size, whichever is smallest.

For FAT16, maximum partition size is 2 GB (with standard 512-byte sectors and 32-KB clusters) or 4 GB (with 64-KB clusters). For FAT32, maximum partition size is 2 TB (with standard 512-byte sectors) or 8 TB (with 2-KB sectors).

I don't know the applicable limits for files on an ext2 or ext3 partition.

I have made a note to upgrade the scripts with that more accurate size information.

The warning is still there. As a newbie, I took it very seriously, but now it seems the limit just applies in rare cases (who uses FAT16 anyway?) Why is it still there?

Hi BarryK et al,

There are some pertinent and interesting comments and two new resizers at http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 48&t=65519

My regards

@ Luluc - do I not recall correctly that only a day or so ago you expressed much disappointment that you made your savefile too large? It's a rhetorical question.

Clarification about NTFS file size limit would also be useful for those who use frugal installs on Windows Vista. NTFS is not subject to the low file size limits of FAT32 and FAT16. As I understand it the maximum file size for NTFS is 16 terabytes minus 64KB. The snag is that usb drives used by many of us for backing up pupsave files use FAT32. They can be reformatted to NTFS but apparently this is not recommended.

Frugal installs on a linux partition rarely need pupsave files bigger than 512MB,

IF

one exports the bigger applications to /mnt/home and symlinks back.

You are correct. However, I am a brand new newbie, still testing Puppy. I haven't really migratedd (without LUKS encryption I can't anyway). I'm still pondering the advantages and disadvantages of having a small or larger pupsave file. At any rate, there must be many people who would like to use a large pupsave file but won't just because the resizer app recommends against it. It seems to me that warning should have been removed a long time ago.

I discovered this the hard way. I installed Opera which is a memory hog anyway and my free space dropped below 100MB in Wary. I enlarged it to 640MB.

Then I discovered the /mnt/home with symlinks, redid Opera, and now I always have over 300MB free on my too large pupsave in Wary.

I knew better by the time I got Lucid 520 and put Opera in /mnt/home with symlinks. With a 512MB save file in 520 I haven't yet used half of it.

Bernie

if you want to shrink your too-large pupsave file, this convert-pupsave tool comes in handy:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 25&t=34452

I tried it on several Puppies, including Wary and it works great.

Download the tar.gz, unpack in a folder of your choice, then run the executable.
