Do You Need Internet to Install OpenOffice?

I found an old Windows ME, and I was going to replace the operating system with Ubuntu. Sadly, it only has 63 MB of RAM. Luckily, though, Puppy Linux runs fine on the computer.

But the computer has Word 97 on it, and I wanted to use the computer for office purposes. It does not have an internet card. So I was wondering if it took internet to install OpenOffice. If it doesn't, I may install Puppy Linux. If it does, I don't think I will. D:

There are versions of Puppy with Oo onto it I believe...
Out of curiosity, How would one get puppy if you don't have internet?? Or do you simply Not have Net capabilities on that particular box?

BTW I just was reading about folks using msoffice with wine!!

I have a Windows 7 / Ubuntu 10.04 LTS laptop, and I just downloaded Puppy Linux and burned it to a CD which I then proceeded to put into my ME.

Could you link me to one, please? I really don't need msoffice. OpenOffice is good. I just need it.

I can look for others, but I'm betting that will do ya!
I will edit this when/if I find other[s] that have Oo included.

Heck this is getting to be a pain ain't it!!
Now I'm determined to get this right... Sure wish there was a way to delete broken links on the murga forum...

Geeze right now I can't even find a link to a .pet for Oo that works!!
When/ if I do you should just be able to download it save to a flash drive and put it in your box and click [run] the pet installer!!
And LMK if ya get it goin yerself... I'm at it now

save it to disk, move it to your laptop, and install it... I think!!!

Edit again... I would like to know what the dependancy issues are??

Wait, so do I burn pet files like isos? I've never heard of .pet files. I don't want to mess up a CD either.

Oh... sorry... No... Just download the .pet, save it to disk.
Then put it onto a flash drive, and put that flash drive into your Puppy machine. Mount [open] the flash drive with puppy drive mounter. Click on the .pet and puppy will do the install for you!

Or you could download a portable version of libreoffice.

Libreoffice is a 'fork' by the original people who made OOo. Only the name OOo is taken up after sun got bought by oracle.

Libre is more up to date than OOo too.

And the packages being portable makes it more flexible.

Not all of them any more.
The ones that wanted to keep Open Office open to everyone under the Linux GPL took the code and started LibreOffice.
Oracle wanted to limit use and make it something you had to pay for. Not allowed under Linux GPL.

I first ran the predecessor of LibreOffice on DOS

Staroffice, widely used In Germany and originally developed by the vice president of Yahoo and was something I had never heard of. Even then I preferred MS works to MS Office. I was in the process of migrating from DOS to Windows
Came across a very fast, very complete, unheard of office suite. Our computer press had never mentioned it before.

Open office might be heavy for your machine--it can be a resource hog.

Have you tried using the applications already installed on puppy? (Abiword --> word; gnumeric --> excell; etc). Unless you have specific needs these are generally good for day to day usage, even in an office.

Also, if possible buy a bit of ram for your machine. It will thank you. Or be sure at least to set up a swap partition. (and a full install, rather than a "frugal" might work better on that machine. )
