Hello,
I'm trying to use some of the commands I remember using years ago in linux. apropos seems to be there, but doesn't return anything useful. makewhatis doesn't seem to exist at all. Is there an alternative?

Puppy uses busybox
and requires the devx for compiling
(for make commands)

What version are you using?
An useful apropos file could be written, but it would have to be Puppy
specific and version specific. There wouldn't be any reason to write it, I
can think of, unless Barry K wanted to include it in the next release.

apropos :
http://packages.debian.org/sid/i386/man-db/filelist
makewhatis :
"Sorry, no results"
puppy uses `pman` .
I compiled mandb but had been a little difficult to get 'pager=less -s' to work
because busybox less does not support the '-s' option .
Creating a system user man had not been that problem .
And a database file like BruceB shows somewhere in this forum got me a 18MB file for a full install, that has now 10GB installed
