..but maybe a qualification/suggestion here&there.

@fxjudy - next time I'm in mp520 (for real, not just a 1stlook), I'll see if report-video (a cli testool) is oki for general use .. it's a simple way to see what driver Xorg is using. Until then it may help to know the vidcard specs - these should be in HardInfo or by Pupscan if you don't know offhand (unless Macpup recommended a certain driver). Xorg can be tricky to fiddle with  it may take me a little while to dl your big screenie... and yeah, I don't know much about nvidea (but got all discomboblated the 1st time I put Xorg-hi for my ati vidcard in mp511 .. tricky for me but I confuse easily ;) )

first look - mp520 (livecd, pfix=ram)

Even at the bootsplash a nice look (leather) and for me it went direct to e17 desk (in that odd-for-me size) .. the noise from my crt as X restarts lets me know I'm using a recent macpup (a double 'tink' rather than the usual single .. or that may be a lupu-thing).

ibar/box/pager all status quo, I did check out the other themes (lighter version of the default works for me), on a 1st look it makes no sense to tweak much (other than to get a sense of the ui). The e-menu still has some odd mono-darkening of icons (seems like the old legacy xpms mostly) and another thing which makes a bit of a mess for other wms which use the puppy-xdg 'standard'. The alphabetical layout of the applications top tier isn't my cup of tea, either. If I had a better sense of how e17 'does' menus ..

Jwm (493).. pretty decent all told (and a good fallback/alternative), obviously a much-updated smooth-color icon theme. jwm-menu icons in full color and the 1st tier is 'traditional' order .. but .. (I spent some time in mp511 trying to correct the following small issue) there's an initial submenu breaking the inline-limit rule in any desktop directory that has a subdir - and if that's not annoying enough, it overlooks the segregation of the other (sub) desktop dirs so the order seems a bit scrambled (sample screenie @69k here). Possibly the 'application' part of the e-menu needs it to be this way..

Tried fluxbox-1.3.1 and it works well as a clean install. Fair easy to disable the update and make it manual once the bulk of things are in place (so the anomaly can be fixed).

Aside from the menu-nits (which are quite trivial if you don't plan on adding other window managers or can overlook them if you do - a few wms or alternative menu schemes may not be affected at all) it looks to be yet another gem in the macpup line. Firefox 4 is especially quick, but some may wish to review the prefs offline before letting it loose (surprised me a bit when it ran flash content on locally stored pages). Good Job Prit, runtt21 and all.

gcmartin , uh dude, What is that about?

fxjudy , I dont know about the nvidia cards . I have seen reports of quickpet suggesting the worng ones in regular lupu and Sneeky has told me some of the drivers don't work that well. I run macpup in vesa/xvesa all the time. I have never hard any problems with it.

Thanks Foo

Hi, this Macpup was the first puppy to work with my new video card, so I
installed it on a usbstick, went to the debian unstable repo, and manually installed (edit: downloaded .deb files installed by the puppy package manager) jackd2, qjackctl (and its QT needs), the 1.23 versions of all the alsa things, Rakarrack for guitar fx, Yoshimi and Phasex for keyboard synthesizers, wine, a few more dependencies, and reaper for recording. It all works great for basic guitar, keyboards, and fx.
The internet connection went through wvdial, the only niggle was the pmount utility quit being able to mount my optical/hardisks at some point.

Its a really gorgeous default theme, and E17 is very quick under the fingers. This should become quite popular, with some extra forum posts around the net.
Cheers

Is he running Macpup inside VMWare or something? I've never used any of those but if i run a Pup on the Mac, there's no OSX desktop screen behind it because i boot straight to the Puppy desktop. Just curious...

That clip was a good illustration of how easy and uncomplicated it can be to download, install and run apps on Macpup, or Puppy in general....cool 8)

This is the old guide for java. The new guide is the third post in the java thread on the macpup forum at :

http://macpup.org/forums/index.php/topic,8.0.html

This is how I install Java. I am sure this info is somewhere else on the forum But I am posting it for macpup. It should work in other puppy's If you want to do-it-yourself. You can also try some of the other java.pet's on the forum. You don't need the devx to do this.

First make a /usr/java folder.

Then go to this page and download and save the Linux self extracting file it's 20.6 MB

http://java.com/en/download/linux_manua ... t=java.com

Then use geany to copy down these instructions so you can close firefox.

Now move the jre-6u29-linux-i586.bin you just downloaded into /usr/java

Open a terminal in /usr/java and run:

Code: Select all

chmod a+x jre-6u29-linux-i586.bin
The name of the bin should change color from black to red in rox.

Now run:

Code: Select all

./jre-6u29-linux-i586.bin
Let it do it's thing. When it finishes it will say "done" in the terminal.

Now run :

Code: Select all

cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
And then run:

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_29/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so
That's it. Now open firefox and run about:plugins in the address bar and see if java is listed down at the bottom.

This is a shot of the KGS go server using the java browser plugin:

This .pet adds a menu entry for the Java control panel.[/url]

This is really cool. I made a link in /usr/sbin to /usr/java/jre1.6.0_24/bin/javaws and now java web start is working. I am able to run the full client from KGS. :D

Click on the Top Hat on the ibar to open the wizard wizard. Then select connect to internet or intranet In the next window select internet by wired or wireless LAN. Then select Network wizard. Then select wlan0 . After that select wireless. Then scan first .Select the network and edit profile .Enter your wep stuff . Then save the profile. Then load the profile. Then auto dhcp. If that fails change your router to wpa .That works for me.
