They have a generic linux package, I haven't tested it yet.

http://preyproject.com/releases/0.5.3/p ... -linux.zip is the current version. Just read the readme "part 2 -- Linux users (not Debian/Ubuntu)" and remove the sudo from the commands.

Got it installed but even after adding in extra dependencies noted, could not get the configuration for the program working.

I'll see if I can throw together a package tonight when i'm out of work although looks like everything will have to be manually configured still after looking at the usage instructions.

Edit: After getting home and taking a look inside the zip file it seems it is not practical/possible to package this up as it requires a running webserver so the path will not always be the same for people wishing to use it on their systems.

Surely it doesn't require a webserver on the device that you want to track? Wouldn't that just be needed on the server that it communicates with (if you run your own server instead of using theirs)?

What I meant when I said that was that It appears to require you to run your own web-server so everyone's configuration will be different and so the program would have to be compiled for each individual computer it is used on to track the device, at least that's how I read it unless if I was wrong.

It works with a web interface. The idea is that you can go to the server and set a device (computer, android phone, etc.) as stolen/missing. A script runs on the device every X mins, which goes to the server and checks if the device is stolen. If the server says that the device is stolen, the device records a bunch of data (screenshot, nearby wifi access points, webcam picture (if one is present) and other stuff) and sends it to the server silently. The user (who lost the device) can then return to the site after a few hours and have a bit of info of where the device is, and might be able to track it down.

You can use your own website (checks if web page is there, 404 error = stolen) and then it e-mails the info to you (as opposed to going to their server).

It is useless if you password protect your accounts. (although you can create a guest account and install it on that)

So presumably if you use their server you don't need your own web server.
