VirtualBox for LHP

#136 Post by nickdobrinich »

@Tazoc,
Thank you for the fast reply.
Using gparted inside of the VM is pure genius.
I will try forthwith.
I already did the symlink once I found out I was filling up my LHP save file.
If I can get this to work I will try to post the VDI somewhere public to further the advance of LHP onto everyone's desktop.

Pburn 3.3.0 burn failure

#137 Post by nickdobrinich »

EDIT: in swapping removable CD drives around, I used a ROM drive which of course cannot burn a CD.
This is what the error messages look like.
ID 10 T.
If someone could remove this post, I would be less embarrassed.

I don't often burn data CDs but I had a Windows data CD to burn tonight with long file names with spaces.
Pburn 3.3.0 failed repeatedly on several machines in both LHP 5.03g and 5.02g.
I was finally able to burn it on one of the PCs with an old Puppy 4.31 running Pburn 3.1.2
As an added note, I burn ISOs on this same PC with Burniso2cd all the time.

Here is the failed Pburn.log:

Hey Taz,

Been a fair while since I have checked, you are still doing great work. I will be updating my usb once I get some time. This release sounds pretty sweet. Your LHP always travels with me and is never far away when I need it and is still working great. I have not been doing any new backgrounds, I have taken up photography and am trying to make something of it. I am on dA, feel free to grab anything that you like from it and if there is anything there that you like but I have not put up a suitable size just let me know and I will send you the full size so you can do what you want with it. Keep up the work mate much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Jason,
Very nice photography there--after a hard day of coding and debugging it was relaxing to sit back and browse your latest work. I especially liked Are you Eyeballing Me Boy and My Pooch. I'd like to see a color pic of your puppy and include both in a future release. Bee in Blue is a stunning display of color and detail.
Thanks for sharing these!

Hey Taz,

Thanks, the one of my pooch is actually a b/w photo, unfortunately I don't have a colour one, well I don't think I took a colour one, I will have a look through and see. I have just put up another one of both my dogs that is in colour that you may also like.

Cheers

@TazOC

Live media Mariner start up with SAMBA SFS added to media (before boot), and I can see the LightHouse boot configuration manager pick up all the SFS files and load them during boot. But, unfortunately, once at desktop, the system does NOT seem to have SAMBA 'installed" when I get to desktop. Mariner is there; FF is there; but not SAMBA. I see the couple of stops before getting to desktop on 1st boot, but, don't know where to point the finger as to why SAMBA is not present and ready to work, when using this SFS method of starting a fresh system is used.

Note: SAMBA works PERFECTLY when I start without adding SAMBA SFS at boot selection and then use your desktop tool to add SAMBA to the system after desktop start and after adding update fixes using the same tool.

So, it appears that the PET is perfect, but something a little off when 1st booting with a Live media that has the SAMBA SFS added.

If its a startup procedural thing, I have not found proper path and could probably use a little guidance.

Hope this helps

Chrome Browser

#143 Post by Barburo »

Hi Taz,
I updated Firefox through the automatic upgrade to version 4 and it is much faster than the 3.x versions.
It made me wonder whether Chrome was worth a look so I included the .sfs file for Chrome and rebooted.
I seem to have the same result as HiDeHo - Chrome starts to load pages then crashes.
I tried the fix several times (deleting the default folder from .config) but it doesn't work for me.
Chrome tries to load a page - you can see it start to load - then the sad face and message that it failed.

The only pages I got to load properly were the Google web page and Google Calendar. It fails on the Gmail page and all others.
I am running .sfs files for KDE and Mariner, with C-F, Firefox,Java, LibreOffice and Xfce.
I successfully downloaded an old version from Slackware12.eu :
google-chrome-4.0.202.2-i386-1as.tgz
which the PPM intercepted and installed for me. It seemed to work OK, so I uninstalled it and tried again with the .sfs file.
Still crashes.
Any ideas?

Hi Barburo,
Only idea I have is to mount the Google-Chrome-7.0.517.sfs in ROX and copy the script /usr/bin/google-chrome from inside the SFS, into and overwriting existing script in /usr/bin, then start from terminal

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/google-chrome
Still I like FF 4.01 best.

The extra SFS mods include the init script, (inside the initrd.gz) /usr/sbin/bootmanager and /usr/sbin/bootsfscfg.

I've posted those and other 5.03 scripts and patched apps at http://lhpup.org/source/503/. Some experience with bash scripting, adding loop device nodes, building and testing the initrd.gz, etc. is required.

As Jasper noted on the other thread, MU made a utility for merging SFS files to reduce their number: SFS-Combiner

Shinobar's sfs_load-1.1 on-the-fly is another option for using >6 SFS; there may be others.
Hope that helps,

I was surprised to find that my version of Egg Recorder
works on Lighthouse 503g.
It has a beautiful interface on Lighthouse!!!

It's a simple audio recorder, meant to be a replacement for precord.

Try it out...

Hi TazOC,

Bibletime 8.1 is a bugfix release that appears to have solved the problem of displaying all resources. If you get a chance please take a look at it. There may even be a 64 bit version available.

The screenshot is from Ubuntu 11.04, 64 bit version.

Cheers,
Jim

I don't like this thing. So complex, not so many people working on it, so bugs, bugs... Tried 5.03. First of all, Opera did not started at all:

bash-4.1$ opera: XSetLocaleModifiers failed with LC_CTYPE 'lt_LT'
opera: LC_CTYPE changed to 'POSIX'

<spot> ~

Yes, really POSIX, I saw this DIY Linux thing a lot. It is probably because I chosed non en_US locale, that's why this panic. But c'mon, not everybody is living in US. Then I tried package manager:

bash-4.1$ sudo su

# gslapt
Failed to open package_data
package_data: No such file or directory
Perhaps you want to run --update?
Failed to download: Couldn't resolve host name
Failed to download: Couldn't resolve host name

Failed to download: Couldn't resolve host name
Failed to download: Couldn't resolve host name
Failed to download: Couldn't resolve host name
Failed to download: Couldn't resolve host name
<root> ~

It couldn't resolve host name. So first impressions are - browser is not working, package manager is not working also. Deleted.

algyzas,

Sorry about the difficulties. Yes, it is complex at times, and we are not a large or well-known distro, so testing is not extremely thorough. We do our best, given the resources at hand.

Please install Opera_NLS-11.01-L1.pet by clicking the Update icon on the desktop. It adds the full language support for Opera.

Gslapt is being dropped from future releases due to insufficient dependency checking. Puppy Package Manager (click the Packages icon on the desktop) might be a better option, and is being improved for Lighthouse 64.

Lighthouse 5.03 Great!!!

#152 Post by speaker »

After many downloads and many reading many pages on Ubuntu sites and Puppy forums... I finally have a great puplet on my Tablet PC.
The digitizer worked (pen & screen) works great on boot excellent programs as well.

The only challenge is still have after downloading wacomrotate to sync my pen and keep orientation correct after the screen rotates with xrandr -q | grep -q '+\w* (' && xrandr -o left || xrandr -o normal .. the desktop does not fill the screen on portrait view.

Anyone know how to correct this? Did not need to edit Xorg.conf so not sure where to look next. Used Linux Mint and wacomrotate and same xrandr script above and all worked well. Love the small footprint and portability of Puppy so reading on.

Thanks Speaker
Thanks for the great work

You're welcome, that's the first time I've seen LHP on a tablet PC! I would try the xrandr command near the top of the script /root/.xinitrc, so that it will activate before the WM, in this case, JWM starts. If that doesn't work, maybe Xfce or another WM would handle xrandr better. Might be slow on a tablet, but KDE4 (SFS+Mariner available for LHP) can rotate the screen via System Settings | Display & Monitor.

tazoc... Thanks ! Yes LHPup is running on the Tablet PC. I have the screen rotation worked out with wacomrotate from debian and xfce display settings. Last step is getting a xvkb that stays on top (focus) to access the address bar in browsers and other apps.

Excellent.. LOVE IT!!!
