Installing devx_520

#1 Post by gary »

I am trying to install devx_520.sfs (already downloaded) on my Lupu520 full install system. In the mnt directory, home is a symbolic link back to / (root). When I place the devx file in mnt/home, it of course, ends up back in / since the directory is circular. The boot manager then reports that it can't find any sfs files in mnt/home, and to move the sfs file to mnt/home beforehand. The end result is that I'm stuck in the proverbial revolving door and devx is never invoked. Does anyone know what's broken, or more importantly, a solution?

I am also running lupu 520 and when I navigate to /mnt and mouse over the home link, it is shown as /initrd/mnt/dev_save.
All my SFS files show up for purposes of mounting using BootManager and they are located in /mnt/home.
So if you are showing a different link, evidently something is broken.

Of course, the variable, $Home, points to /root. But that is a different animal.

Full install? That's the only way the above would make sense.

My understanding is that the devx should be in that top directory (if it were a frugal install, it should be in /mnt/home/ -- in your case, it seems that /mnt/home/ is "/")

Once the file is there, you should be able to add it to the boot process:

Menu >> System >> BootManager Configure Startup.

Once configured, I believe you need to do a reboot for it to fully link the package

I've seen that before. Normally /mnt/home/ becomes the same folder as above, but under certain conditions (some sort of corruption), it doesn't correctly link back.

I think that it generally comes from trying to be too tricky on the first boot or two (so I just go thru a couple boots, until everything is fully configured, before customizing the system at all).

I just want to jump in here long enough to mention that my install of lupu 520 is a frugal install.
I have never did a full install of any Puppy versions as I have a bunch of Puppy versions on one ext2 partition with shared SFS files and .mozilla also shared via a link in each version.
And my shared SFS and .mozilla are placed in /mnt/home.

Nothing is broken. The files in the sfs have to be installed in the correct hd directory. BootManager does not work for a full installation, it only works with a frugal installation. Goto Quickpet SFS>Sfs_grabber and follow prompts. Sfs grabber will convert the sfs to a .pet which is then installed on your full hd installation. 01micko has made it easy for full hd users to install an sfs.

Previous posters need to use or research a full hd installation before attempting to answer a question re full installation and providing incorrect information.
