Machine locks up!!

#16 Post by Tui »

I am making this posting from another machine
using a KVM switch between.

After a while in use, I using PFIX=RAM, the machine
locks up and only control is the mouse!

The clock time is at a stand still also!

WHY?

I will do some more testing

choose where to load personal file
0 none
1 sdb1
2 sdb2
The -ide-kernel also has got the newer SATA drivers enabled inside, not as modules .

So if your [netbook]pc has got SATA joints for the drives, then they will show up as "sd" and not "hd"

ide drives

#19 Post by shinobar »

Thanks Barry.
The 502beta does not recognize my ide drives (hdd and dvd) but ok with the sata and usb drives.
My both ide/sata is of the Marvell's and is problematic depends on the kernel, but is all ok with wary-500/lupu-510/puppy-431.

PS: got error message when running probedisk2:

Code: Select all

/etc/rc.d/PUPSTATE: line 9: ATAOPTICALDRIVES: command not found
guess '#' is missing at the line 1357 in the init script in initrd.gz.

[Solved with 503] Jumpy cursor

#20 Post by peebee »

wary503 cures this problem.....

Hi Barry
Wary 502 has behaviour I've never encountered before on my Thinkpad 600 266MHz 196MB ram 2GB swap partition manual frugal installs.....

The cursor freezes then jumps, freezes then jumps, etc etc etc.

No other Puppy has ever done this....

Thanks for all your hard work for us all
Cheers
Peter

Hi Barry,

I have just had another go with this Betaversion
and all is well at this moment, no lockup!

I am making this post from it now.

wary-502-uni live-cd
Compaq EN series EFF 350Mhz, working o/b sound chip es18xx module (now detected as isapnp device)
Live-cd : ran alsawizard (/var/tmp snd card database is populated) and runs as expected, many thanks to all involved.

full-install: ran alsawizard for sound, on 2nd boot retrovol pcm was at normal level with pcm1 down to ~50%
no change in /etc/asound.state (if deleted, the file is recreated on next boot with previous boot values, unless alsactl store fnct is used)
..the pcm value survives 1 extra boot before it's muted.

I'm a bit confused here, if asound.state doesn't contain/hold the snd config values, where are they saved/retrieved on next boot ?

on a side note, has anyone also noticed that the ibiblio mirrors have been down for 3 days now, due to a server hd crash, well that's the msg at the bottom of the ibiblio/puppy http screen anyway. Only way to get puppy/quirky is through the official http site & trying other links reports an apache not found directory error !

using PFIX=RAM, the machine

Normally, KVM switches behave - I use one all the time. However, sometimes they don't - I reported an instance recently. Eventually, I switched the mouse and everything returned to normal. This was curious because the mouse works on all other distros and when bypassing the KVM, so there is something unique cropping up occasionally in an odd Puppy release.
I prefer Genius mice, but, in the recent hiatus, I found Logitech more predictable. I don't care for the poor customer support in Logitech, though. Much rarer to find a misbehaving k/b. Most of my reliable ones are either Chinese clones or ancient non-W-keyed devices. In both cases, avoid anything branded M$ (or Apple!) or fancy units with slanted keys and extra functions (all too easy to accidentally touch extra function keys not designed to work in Linux, although some folks relish the chance to re-programme them).
Wireless devices are to be avoided, of course, as anyone with good experience of them will attest. For example, if the battery goes down at an inopportune moment, you stand to lose an entire treatise... Hopefully folks have already got the message to avoid i.r. ditto.
Any Brit wanting some spare keyboards send me a PM - too heavy to send overseas.

The graphics card in this pc is an ati radeon x1600 pro which isn't supported
with the new ati driver and it won't work with mesa dri pet, my older ati
radeon 9200 pro works with the mesa dri pet (previous message), so I'm sol with
this card I guess when it comes to faster graphics.

502beta problem with 500>502 upgrade

#31 Post by scsijon »

Found a problem with a 500 frugal to 502 upgrade.

Booted with 502 cdrom on my test box with wary5 (frugal)
it found the savefile for 500 and I selected it
it said it wanted to copy the 502 files across to the savefile partition
I said yes
it said it was doing so, cdrom flashed for a while and hd light also flashed
it said it had upgraded the savefile

I tried a few apps, worked ok

rebooted, removed cd, expecting it to come into 502 when I picked the wary5 menu item
it didn't, said savefile was last used by 502, do I want to upgrade to 500
I said no and it started in ram
checked out directory for upgrades, nothing visable, nothing found on a search

rebooted from cd
it started ok as 502
did a check and then search for 502 files
nothing found!

Manually copied the 502 files across to the 500 frugal partition (moved the 500 files to a 500 subdir first)
rebooted, removed cdrom
all came up ok as 502

also noticed a mix of hda1-10, sr0-1, sda-b for devices visable.

over to you I think

will download and test 503 tomorrow am.

Inspiron 700m; full install.

Like the other versions after Wary 098, this one also has a very
long usb-pcmcia loading count when booting.
It can cause the cursor to freeze on occasion.

Classic network wizard would not make wpa connection;
sns did.

Right click on icons still has menu pop-up glitch on occasion.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

In relation to an earlier post you made:

With Htop, I find Quirky 1.3 using 35mb ram, while Wary uses 90mb ram
at idle.
