It is possible that you could install it using the Debian packages. Scroll down to "Download qgis":

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/qgis

If you're running a frugal install, make a backup copy of your pupsave. Then:

1) Follow the i386 version(s), install the main package.

2) Run it from the command line, note any missing dependencies.

3) Download those other packages, and install those dependencies. Goto 2), and repeat until it works.

Note: it looks like there are many, many, many dependencies, so it may be difficult to make it work. Many Debian packages are pretty easy to install, but these usually don't show that large number of libraries.

This one may be tricky.

BTW, if you are not running a frugal install, perhaps it would be worth setting one up, just for the purpose of determining if this can be installed easily.

Is this a good GIS package? I have a friend looking for one, and if this is a powerful one, I might try seeing if it can be set up.

IIRC, I once had GRASS running, but I didn't know how to run it, so I could only confirm that it "worked" to the extent that it reported no errors.

A friend of mine says that qgis is very good
but grass is something similar.

how have you installed (grass)? in which version of puppy?

have you create a pet or sfs file?

I run Puppy 4.3.1, but I've built no .pets

I will have to dig back into what I did to get GRASS running -- that might take me a couple days (I've mislaid my USB drive with my Puppy software collection).

And if qgis is that good, I may try to install that in the future.

Again, I won't build .pets, but perhaps I can give a "recipe" of Debian packages to install to get it running (I have lower confidence in this, just because of the number of dependencies shown, but I will look into it -- I'd like to have a package myself...so...).

I've no idea what Qgis is for, but why not try the slackware package? (Going on my general feel that slack->debian->ubuntu have increasing dependency requirements in that order.)

BTW, I found some information, and I believe that I had only installed these 2 packages from Debian to get "grass" working (well, it had run without reporting errors, I don't know how to use the program, or how to read in GIS databases...)

I'm basing this on the fact that I saved these 2 .deb files in my "grass" install folder (I don't believe that I would have downloaded the python lib, if grass had worked without installing it).

Note: testing it quickly here, I'm not sure that I needed the python library, either -- though perhaps I had already installed that. Try just installing "grass", and run it from the command line; note any errors, and install those libraries.

I'll attempt "qgis" in the next few days.

I will try with another person that knows the grass, in order
to see if it works.

It's been a few years since the discussion started. I'm hoping since then someone has succeeded in getting qgis working in puppylinux and will post their experiences. Thanks.
