Fix for international keyboards (Xkb) in Puppy 1.0.8 - (OLD) |
|
This post has been superceeded by this post: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=6396
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Revised instructions after feedback from Barry:
To get your international keyboard to work in Puppy 1.0.8, do these steps:
1. Download and save attached file xkbcomp.gz in /root
2. Open a rxvt terminal and unpack the file
# gunzip xkbcomp.gz
3. Copy to /usr/X11R6/bin/
# cp xkbcomp /usr/X11R6/bin/
4. Press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to quit X
5. Type "xwin" to restart X again
Now your international keyboard should work in Puppy 1.0.8
No changes are neccessary to xorg.conf.
Note: There may be other xkb binary files needed for some functions like lior2b's "alt-shift" option in xorg.conf. I haven't tested yet.
The Xkb binary file is from lior2b's xkb.tar.gz. See thread http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=5993
post #5 for more information.

D**n,
I had these extra apps in puppy2, left them out when updating
1.0.8.
For xkbcomp, you don't have to change the link.
Just place xkbcomp in /usr/X11R6/bin/.
Do you actually need the link /etc/X11/xkb to
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb?
I left that out deliberately, didn't think it was needed.

Nope, doesn't seem to be needed. Just before I read your post I did some more testing after removing the link. My keyboard still works.
It is interesting to see what appears to be a lot of redundancy in xkb.tar.gz. Maybe a lot of xorg proper can be skimmed off as well...

if xkb fails, you still might use xmodmap:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=4656
But it would be better to find a solution with xkb instead of xmodmap.
