Yep, been out of town, but not CES.

Gcmartin, if that file system question is when using a save file, then everything should be saved except in /tmp and anything on a file system that's mounted on /.

PS: James says booting with the kernel option noirqdebug takes care of the "Disabling Interrupt #19" problem he was having.

gcmartin

Did find the same thing. Maybe I'm missing howto save /home

Welcome back! Didn't make CES?. We were hoping you were somewhere have some Geeky fun.

My LiveDVD is not showing anything EXCEPT what I share in the post. I may be doing something wrong, but for example, I create a /home folder and its not there when I reboot. (tried /Downloads also).

Here's what I see before shutdown

"home" and "Downloads" do NOT survive over session save, reboot of LiveCD

Its not a problem. I just wanted to know the rules and where supporting documentation exist.

Hope this helps.

Very Stable comments

Completed full testing and I happy to share what my finding are:
  • FATDOG is still very-very stable. My LiveCD system, after initial setup and "session-save to CD", it has not given any hint of instability. Same as 5.0. No lockups. No desktop apps issues. Stable.
  • Geany is a fine file editor. Like Leafpad, they allow file editing. Maybe in the next FATDOG, it would be nice to put both of this under the same heading in the Menu.
  • Tested JamesBond's implementation for setting PXE services in FATDOG. And, there is a manual on how to set it up. Even though it may not be obvious, the Instructions for 1st-time users was developed using what we observed in FATDOG. So all FATDOG users should expect that the "kinks" are worked out and setup is straight-forward.
  • Kirk's SAMBA 3.5.6 implementation is straight forward and matches the documentation for FATDOG that already exist in the forum.
This is a very very good system for any user(s) with 64bit machines who would want to migrate away from a Windows Platform. The 4 items mentioned above match/exceed what any user would get from a Microsoft implementation.

I wish to make one comment that Kirk has helped FATDOG users overcome. "He and his helpers has placed FATDOG users in an atmosphere that 32bit Puppy users do not have at this time with the current plethora of Puppies."

When the first PCs were produced, we addressed multi-systems communication. The foundation of that communications was from the initial items incorporated in the beginning. You 1st got dial-up and immediately we followed with LAN hardware. The software came next giving PCs the ability to share information directly with users over the LAN and over dial-up.

The 32bit PUPs are hampered with struggling to insure that their PUPs run on constrained hardware for its RAM intensive OS. Its what they are constantly battling.

FATDOG addresses a completely different class of PCs and IS NOT CONSTRAINed in that manner. For one, in my 40 years, I have NOT seen a 64bit PC with less than 1GB of RAM. And, I have been in many-many companies.
Given that, FATDOG has the luxury of addressing its RAM intensity in such a way as to produce a very-very stable (and fast) OS. Its applications seem to benefit from this fact as they are stable as well. This merely means that this OS is uniquely different from ALL the other PUPs that exist. IT is truly competent, capable, and special. It is the ONLY PUP that I have/would install for others to use because it delivers full-features which work and there's documentation to support the "SYSTEM SERVICES" for those things that are necessary on a LAN.

Keep up the good work. And continue to keep us current with speed, agility, and stability. Also, insure that we have and continue to have available system services which match or exceed what is available from Microsoft. The other Linux distributions have already done this, several years ago; namely Knoppix, Ubuntu, Redhat, Suse, Madriva, etc...with system services. Although their model is NOT RAM intensive, their OS, communication and system services, address stability and functionality available to the applications that run within the delivered system (eg desktop, editors, multimedia, business and management tools).

FATDOG is the reason why I have a stable full-function LiveDVD environment. Its the reason, I can setup and deploy FATDOG for use without touching user HDDs. Long live FATDOG.
I hear the dogs barking. Now, where is that "puppy chow" ...

Add PXE to FATDOG. PCs can boot from the LAN without media

#23 Post by gcmartin »

If you ever wanted to know how to boot PCs without using any media, see these steps in The Instructions are simple for anyone to use. Credit for this rightfully goes to JamesBond who did all the work to bring this to FATDOG.

Request to EVERYONE: If you hit any snag and resolve it, please, please either post it or PM one of us so that we can add it to the troubleshooting section of the document. Help us make this as easy as can be for anyone to impletment PXE, and to have an answer in the document, if they should mis-step.

Thanks in advance.

There are some jpeg files which will not show as thumbnails in Rox. This is due to a small bug in Rox which has been fixed in subsequent version of it.
Anyway, here is a re-compile of Rox (same version of the one used in Fatdog 511 - I think) with the bug fixed. (It's a change from "char header" to "unsigned char header" in pixmaps.c line 1076, in function extract_tiff_thumbnail).
EDIT - gunzip this file and copy it over to /usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer

I had noticed the thumbnail quirk.
ROX-Filer fix seems to work OK.

No worries. There is also one subtle issue - the /etc/hostname doesn't match /etc/hosts (ie hosts doesn't contain an entry for /etc/hostname). Just spend half a day troubleshooting why my ghostess doesn't work in 511 when it did in 500 (and there is no change in most of the libs between 500 and 511).

Fix - put this line in /etc/rc.d/rc.shutdown

Code: Select all

sed -i'' -e "1 {s/^.*$/127.0.0.1 localhost $(cat /etc/hostname)/}" /etc/hosts
after line 342 (after the closing "fi")

Code: Select all

HTNM="$(cat /tmp/rc.sd.tmp)"
  if [ "$HTNM" != "" ] ; then
echo $HTNM > /etc/hostname
    fi
The sed code basically re-creates the first entry of /etc/hosts file and ensures /etc/hostname is included in that line.

cheers!

OpenOffice 3.3.0 final for 64bit is available.

Is JRE included inside of any existing FATDOG PETs that are in the PPM or is JRE in the base system? I see that the Official OOo requires it.

Thanks Jim for the info. I'll package it when I've got the time (probably the Libre Office instead of Open Office - the current SFS avalailble is for Go-OO, and Go-OO has merged with Libre Office).

cheers!

JRE is available as an SFS package. As far as I know, though, OpenOffice package its own internal JRE library, so you don't need any external Java.

Kirk, thanks for FatDog 511. I downloaded and tested it on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC yesterday and it was running great.

Cheers,

The following fix will enable one to configure PrintScreen key for doing screenshot (or anything else, for that matter).

SysReq keycodes and Printscreen keycodes are mapped to the same KeySim - that is "Print". But since SysReq keycode is 92, and PrintScreen is 111, when one does a reverse mapping from "Print", one always get 92 and not 111. Thus, action to trap "Print" always ends up trapping keycode 92 (not 111).

Real keyboard (=the one in my laptop) these days no longer generate keycode 92, they always generate 111. Thus - when one presses Printscreen, nothing happens (that key generates 111, one traps 92 - so nothing is trapped).

Solution? Make SysReq returns 92 and make PrintScreen return 111 - as it should be!

1. Edit /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/pc
- Line 102 change from

Code: Select all

//	symbols[Group1]= [ Print, Sys_Req ]
to

Code: Select all

symbols[Group1]= [ Print, Print ]
.
- Line 106 change from

Code: Select all

//	symbols[Group1]= [ Print, Sys_Req ]
to

Code: Select all

	symbols[Group1]= [ Sys_Req, Sys_Req ]
2. Run this in terminal

Code: Select all

setxkbmap us
.

This only needs to be done once, and it will survive reboots.

Note: solution only works for us keyboard. If your is non-us keyboard ... well, worth a try, change step 2 with your own keyboard mapping (e.g. setxkbmap gb, for example) and see whether it works.

Tried booting from DVD - even with 'puppy pfix=ram'
FD (FatDog) was picking up previous settings
Deleted all stray FD files on my hard drive - booted up OK (this is a known issue)

Tried to add my bookmarks
No joy - just would not import :cry:
Installed FireFox development 3.6.12 from here
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... g/pets/500
and dragged the run time from
/usr/lib64/firefox-3.6.12/firefox
onto the desktop
Import bookmarks works in the 3.6.12 version . . .

Installed the ATI catalyst driver

I almost feel I know what I am doing
. . . I may be getting the hang of this Linux thing . . . :wink:
