chrismt. Done. Remember you can update your puppy-lucid repo with Quickpet -> More Pets -> Update Lupu PPM |
Thanks!
I updated the repo from QuickPet, it said I need to Reboot...Is that necessary?
Again, Thanks for making Puppy a nice experience and light

Puppy 520 has booted three times in a row now with the acpi=off code on the kernel line in grub4dos.
But it did not help on Puppy Studio, that one did not boot despite me having same code as on 520. Studio is a 511 version. Too late tonight so I test LupQ and DoluQ tomorrow.
I don't like to use acpi=off it is too broad and course measure.
What could it be that cause it to stop at the b44-pci-bridge thing.
Could one adddress that one specific and not have the broad acpi=off
I most likely go to bed but try to wait for your answer some 10 to 20 minutes. need to go up early
I will log out and test rebooting a few times more and then read here again.

If you have opened PPM since you booted then you will need to reboot in order for the new contents to take effect. Well, actually, if you have clicked one of the categories in PPM that has new material then you will need to reboot.
That's why we just say to reboot

Booted three times more in a row so acpi=off solved the booting but it fails to shut down properly instead.
It goes as far as System Halted but then fail to do the rest and one need to hold the power button down for four seconds to shut it down completely.
So hope you can help me find better solution than the acpi=off
I go to bed now and test more tomorrow. Happy that I can boot but not good it fail to shut down.

Tutorial on Openbox menus |
|
I wrote a tutorial on the Openbox menus,
that can come in handy for users of Lucid Puppy.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=490612#490612
_____________________________________________________________
I have completed the Spanish version of Lucid Puppy 5.2.
The menus are now in completely in Spanish ( as best I can do anyway )
Check it out

Edit. Jay!
Edit again. Would it help me using this one too? acpi=noirq
apart from the one that made it work for me the nosmp
I am in Lupu 250 now and finally got it to both boot and shut down properly 5 times in a row which is very good track record on this Acer
Wow took many months to accomplish.
Shinobar's safe boot recommendation in his lupQ menu.lst did it so now I need to test this one every thing that still fails to boot.
Edit, by using each entry on the kernel line one at a time I managed to find the one most likely needed:
nosmp
for me to both boot and shut down properly.
I wish somebody could have told me to use smp now many months has gone in frustration over not being able to boot reliably. Yes I have started threads about it and asked here too.

nooby-
perhaps you should put all your notes together and post a long rant in the "puppy on laptops" thread.

Max, I am so all over the place that I fail to have one single note on how to do things. I have to reinvent them again and again. I can understand why some very structured guys get very upset over my lack of structure.
But that is how it is. I love computers but my body are not made to be near them. They are like Alien artifacts that one have to figure out by trial and error.
enough of our little chat back to 5.2. It work all the time now since me started to use nosmp. Wish I had new that one back when the failure started.

Sub_title: Win keys, win+D |

I just wanted to post a quick "THANK YOU" to the Lupu 520 developers for the inclusion of the Win+D keybinding for clearing the desktop. Nice touch! Totally didn't expect that pleasant surprise for disappearing and reappearing a cluttered desktop.
Congrats, nooby on finally solving your problem! You obviously left no stone unturned as I come across your queries nearly everywhere. (I would have converted that Acer into a frisbee long ago!) I agree with Max - it would be good if you could post in the "Hardware - what laptops work with Puppy" section a summary of your problem and solution (not all the dead-ends you took, although that would make for interesting reading). None the less - your dogged persistence is inspiring. Lets hope you get many YEARS of trouble-free use with that laptop.

Cheers for nooby. You are an inspiration to us all. You are tenacious. In my experience that is what solves most computer problems. My wife cannot believe how often I reboot over and over to check things. Now you have given us a new item of Help for people--to try nosmp if they are having trouble booting. It is a pleasure to work with you dude! Thanks.

jemimah just posted today her Frisbee wpa-frontend, let's say, wireless networking utility. It has provisions to work with Lucid--thank you for that jemimah. Some adventurous people might want to give it a try.

It's not just for wireless. It handles wired too - thus the name change from pwireless2.

Thanks Jemimah
5.2 works on my netbook so will try that.
In the UK it has been announced that o2 will provide free WiFi
Wardriving is currently illegal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wardriving
Maybe I should sit on the bench outside my local police station to see if they are a legal hot spot? They were not last time I tried this.
The idea of WiFi as a public service
will take a long time to trickle through.
Do we have any road warrior puppys?
