The REBOL programming language is well suited to database applications. A script can be written very quickly, or an existing script adapted.http://www.rebol.net/cookbook/recipes/0012.html
A search at the script library might reveal others -

Need the engine, don't know how the license might relate to your application.

Rebol runs on Windows, Linus Mac, and about 20 other platforms, with little or no change to scripts. Very little overhead, extremely flexible - well worth a look or study. With a bit of luck, one might have a script up and running in less time than it takes to read the first chapter of the manual of some database packages.

Well here I am back. I fired up Puppy just to look at it again. I have basically guv it up. I liked the Puppy and would have changed over but the deal breaker is that it won't recognize my cameras and I was unable to get Wine to pick up my favorite MSWorks Database program. I did mess with Wine on 2 comps and almost had the Database on my old comp but screwed the thing up somehow and will now junk it.
Perhaps (probly) a more savvy operator coulda made it work. I simply haven't the time. Bye

Take a look at http://www.alexnolan.net/software/dbf.htmdiscombolixt wrote:I’m looking for a simple data sheet. I’ve been using the MSWorks 8.5 DS which suits me perfectly. Is there a similar DS I can download?
It's a portable windows app that runs under wine.

I have a collection of several hundred model aircraft plans and use the built-in Gnumeric spreadsheet program in Puppy 4.XX as a simple database to keep them organized.
Like MS Works, I have several columns with headings of Category, Manufacturer, Model Name, Wingspan, Source, and Designer. Very handy system for quickly locating any chosen plan.
Sidestepped a lot of unnecessary spreadsheet learning by using OpenOffice.org for Dummies as my user manual. Go to the part about using Calc, all that you need to know is likely contained in the first two chapters. MS Excel is the model for OO, Gnumeric, and other spreadsheet programs so their learning materials are pretty much interchangable. With what you already know about MS Works, the learning curve should be a breeze .
