I just compiled squashfs-tools 4.1, this time with LZO support. It seems my netbook doesn't like the gzip-compressed Puppy SFSs ... so maybe it's time for someone to build the first Puppy ever with LZO compression
My recompiled 2.6.36.2 has support for LZO in its squashfs.ko and that's the default in mksquashfs. I just need to put that tiny little executable in Woof ...

Adding App to Taskbar via JWM config breaks it (sort of)
Hi All,
New 053 install with new SaveFile. I wanted to add a launcher for mtpaintsnapshot.sh to the taskbar. I successfully did so using JWM Configuration, but the patient was severely crippled.
An icon (I installed in mini-icons) appeared next to the Menu button, hovering over it showed Tooltip, and clicking it launched mtpaintsnapshot. But nothing remained of the rest of the taskbar: no opened "folder," and none of the lovely widgets --active program, volume, clipboard manager, Active Interfaces, Free Space, and CPU usage. All gone. Just the Menu button and my jealous new app.
Clicking "restore defaults," didn't.
I understand that JWM Configuration is flakey. So, I looked around for some other Windows managers and other panel configuration apps, but couldn't find any that would work in sPup. Openbox from Slackware installed, but I couldn't find config or panel managers to work with it. Icewm installed --I think from Lucid-- but "switch to" didn't work. I didn't try the ones from the Puppy-Woof repository. Does anyone know if they'll work. Ideas, suggestions, and where convenient links would be appreciated.
On a separate note, I installed Foxyfox_extra_distros. See discussion beginning here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63393
and especially here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 3&start=45
And as noted in the last referenced post, that involves creating a desktop file. Clicking the desktop in usr/share/applications once it was completed started the app, but neither restarting X, nor JWM, nor even rebooting generated a menu entry. As I've done this a couple of times, I know a menu entry will be generated on the 2nd or third reboot, or once when JWM was restarted from JWM Configurator. The problem isn't urgent. Just annoying. Unless, of course, JWM Configurator is now the "standard" way to generate menu entries and I just didn't know it.

LOL Mike... jwm tray entries are the simplest thing in the world to do manually. For mtpaintsnapshot or whatever it is called, just add this line to /root/.jwmrc-tray
Did you get your tray back or do you need help?
Code: Select all
<TrayButton popup="screen capture" icon="mini-camera.xpm">exec:mtpaintsnapshot.sh</TrayButton>

JWM Config -- Solved, sort of
Hi All,
Thanks again DaveS for the workaround. It is more than sufficient to meet my needs. I was aware that it could be done by hand, just hadn't tried it.
On the other hand, I figured that 01micko --and especially newbies trying sPup -- would want to know that an installed app (which is supposed to make modification easy) can screw things up.

I agree, trouble is, JWM has gone through some serious updates since those apps were built, and I guess they dont cut it any more.
Seriously, editing JWM configuration by hand is quite easy and gives huge flexibility. Please take a look here for a custom launchbar:

SPUP053 and SeaMonkey
@01Micko, you may want to know this. for Seamonkey. Probably want to set the feature "true" in SeaMonkey.I like what your've done to get a stable, full-featured, out of the box browser in this Puppy distro. Very forward thinking by you and BaryK.
Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.
Daves and gcmartin,
I agree that seamonkey-2.1b renders very well and the new webGL feature is great, but I intend to stick with the latest stable seamonkey
As for chrome, I haven't tried yet, but Iron does run, see the second post of this topic, you need to install gconf and orbit-2 (says it there)
****************************
Thanks for that report mikeslr, Joe Wing has changed some of the behaviour in jwm-500 and we are his guinea pigs! I have found it quite stable and the only fullscreen issue I have had is with gxine, and that issue has been around for a long time. I did have another issue with dragging a window down, it should either come out the top of the screen, or, if you have virtual desktops configured in 2 rows, to the desktop below, but on occasions the the window gets stuck in "limbo". I'll report to Joe soon.
I'll try and fix the tool where you add a fast launch icon.
Cheers

Anyway, got to the bottom of that!
I was wondering why mine (and Barry's) gnumeric packages are some 900KB bigger than your luci/lupu gnumeric package and it's because some of the plugins are bigger, this may well be to do that in spup there is no gconf, so the plugins are built with compensation. The excell plugin is at least 150KB bigger, the perl_loader plugin is huge compared to yours and some others are bigger too, all adds up.

Thanks for reporting that jwm issue... it's nothing to do with the tool, it's the buggy bc which emil told us about on page 10 (or so) of this thread, so, my bad!
You can now add any launch button once you install the attached pet. You may (or may not) need to restart X to get the tray icons back.

Actually Chrome can be installed from Puppy Package manager (duh.. last place I ever look ). It installs a lot of deps and unless one is a big fan, it aint worth the space (IMHO). But it does run just fine. Oddly, font rendering in Chrome is better in Lucid.01micko wrote:

Hey guys, I compiled Wine for spup, it's here. There are more packages I compiled yesterday - I worked till 3:00 (I know I'm crazy), went to sleep and woke up at 13:00 to continue the Puppy work
It's 1.3.11 and there's a menu entry for winecfg, plus rox mime-type handling for Windows/DOS executables, plus "Open with" for wine.
My hacked rox is messed up but I just fixed the PET, now I'm rebuilding my LZO-compressed spup. Besides the Rox issues it works and it's goddamn fast. The funny thing is its size - it's 129 MB while the gzip flavor is 115 MB - it has Opera and Flash, plus some libraries from firefox to make browser plugins work. Opera is 9.5 MB, the Firefox libraries are ~2 MB and Flash is almost 5 MB. Do the math
I want to make three flavors of this baby - one with LZO compression, Opera and Flash (for most users, especially Opera and the out-of-the-box kind of puppians), another with LZO and the browser installer (for those who like the speed but hate Opera) and a third flavor with gzip and the browser installer (for those who like the Quickpet agenda, those who hate Opera and those who need a small Puppy due to lack of RAM, flash drive size, etc').
EDIT: maybe I'll make a LZO flavor with Firefox too.

Hey 01micko, I just noticed powerapplet_tray is broken under my spup build with 2.6.36.2, so here's a nice replacement I found. It also has a CPU frequency tray icon for extra uber-coolness
