PostPosted: Fri 17 Dec 2010, 16:35    Post subject: spup-052 built from latest woof
Subject description: more nvidia

From previous message:

I installed 052 to a flash drive using bootflash.
On first boot chose vesa driver, configured wired network, sound was good.
Downloaded newest Nvidia driver, NVIDIA-Linux-x86-260.19.29.run and
installed the devx and kernal source sfs.
Rebooted and installed the nvidia driver.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update:

I moved my flashdrive to another pc with an nvidia card and I had to
exit to the prompt and enter "nvidia-xconfig" and then "xwin" to get
hardware acceleration going again.

report-video sees the nvidia graphics card on pc#2 but on pc#1 it sees the tv
tuner card and not the nvidia graphics card.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
pc#2

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Slack Puppy, version 052

Chip description:
oem: NVIDIA
product: MCP77 Board - mcp78pvo Chip Rev

Driver used by Xorg:
vesa

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
pc#1

# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Slack Puppy, version 052

Chip description:

MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)

Driver used by Xorg:
vesa

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"

...the above also recorded in /tmp/report-video
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The vesa part is incorrect in both cases.

I had to configure retrovol to get sound working on pc#2 and also
reconfigure the wireless network.

Hi, where did you get that sfs?
(being on Lanzarote now)

I once got GE from tazaoc's Lighthouse site and converted it.

Also around MU's NYearspup.and in Lupu as a pet, which can be converted with Trio's Petmaker into an sfs.

A word of warning about Trio's Petmaker.

It may be fine to convert a pet to an sfs but if you want to go the other way, that is, convert an sfs to a pet do not try it!

There is a fatal bug which will wipe all mounted partitions at the time. I discovered this and it has been confirmed by Jim1911. So use it at your own risk. Unfortunately Trio is not around much these days to fix it.

Cheers

Hi Mick,

WOW, great job, already RC quality and it's only your second release. Extremely fast and stable on my hardware and I've loaded a lot of extra software. Everything works fine but amarok.

    == EXTRASFSS ===
amarok-1.4-lucid.sfs (has segementation fault, will try slackware's amarok-2.3.0 and report back)
    Bibletime_lucid-2.7.2a.sfs
    java_jre-6u22-Lucid-sfs4.sfs
    OpenOffice.org3-3.3.0rc7_sfs4.sfs
    spup_devx_052.sfs
=== User Installed Pkgs (PPM) ===
    Package Description
numlockx-1.2-i486 turns on numlock at boot
    htop-0.9-i486 Process Viewer
nvidia-260.19.21-k2.6.34.1s5 Configure NVIDIA X Server Settings
    PupControl-1.1 PupControl panel
    gimp-2.6.6-i486-1 Gimp image editor
    namoroka-3.6.12-spup Firefox Web Browser
gnome-games-Lite_2.26.1-i486-Spup Avoid the robots and make them crash into each other
    solitaire-minesweeper-1.3-i486 minesweeper game
gnuchess-5.07 GPL licensed chess engines and graphical frontends
    PupApps-1.1 PupApps launcher
    PupClockset-pango-1.1 PupClockset manager
    PupShutdown-1.5 PupShutdown manager
    PupSnap-1.1 PupSnap screen capture
    scrot_0.8-13 scrot CLI screen capture
Acrobat_Reader-9.3.3-Lucid Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF application
    bluefish-2.0.2 Bluefish text editor
    hplip-3.9.12-scan HP Scanner Drivers
LHP_sys_info-0.3 Lighthouse System Information & Video Report
    pwidgets-2.3.1 Pwidgets tiny desktop apps
    snap2-4.17 snap2 snapshot backup now!
    sunbird_1.0b1-1.0b1 Sunbird personal organizer
    thunderbird-3.1 e-mail client
Wbar_with_setup-1.3.3-Lucid Wbar Setup -adjust wbar settings
    wcpufreq-0.4 CPU Frequency Scaling Tool

Consider adding wcpufreq-0.4, CPU Frequency Scaling Tool, which appears to work great and will fill one gap in your base software. It even picked up all 8 of my cores.

PPM has one problem with the puppy-spup repository, vlc-1.1.5 is not found.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim, thanks for testing.

One thing you brought to my attention there is Snap2.. I wasn't aware that Lloyd had updated, that will be fixed in the next version.

Cheers

Hi Mick,

After running it a few hours, I've run into several serious problems.
1. Rox cannot drag and drop files.
2. Puppy Wallpaper Setter v1.1 cannot change the wallpaper.
3. Note the backgrounds folder with missing files. I copied extra backgrounds over using a console cp command which copied fine, then later after trying the Wallpaper setter, some of the files disappeared except for the name.
4. Pointer focus is off for right click. The right click on an icon may or may not open the proper menu.

Amarok 2.3 from slackware is almost 500MB with lots of dependencies missing. (This has nothing to do with above since it was done in a different pupsave that has already been deleted.)

Sorry, I spoke too soon about it being RC quality.

Cheers,
Jim

Mick, Disregard above problems, 1-4, starting with a new pupsave and loading only Namoroka, numlockx-1.2, nvidia-260-19, hplip-3.9.12-scan, OpenOffice3.3rc7, and java_jre-6u22-Lucid, I have been unable to duplicate above problems. Apparantly, Rox is conflicting with some of the other programs I loaded.
The misbehaving program appears to have been PupClockset-pango-1.1 PupClockset manager, however the problem has been corrected with PupClockset-1.2. Jim

I don't know if it is correct, but it seems to work.
I rename the pet to tar.gz
Extract it in a dir.
Then do dir2sfs to create the sfs.

For what it's worth, I just dragged and dropped some files with 2 Rox windows...no problem. And I've changed the wallpaper about 10 times....no problem there either.

I started to get Amarok myself, till I saw how big the download was.... Laughing

Installed 052 (FRUGAL Lin'N'Win)
I tried my application environment.
I had an issue when clicking on a link in my e-mail client (running in wine) SeaMonkey froze and I had the tittle bar only with e-mail client contents frozen in it.

Terminating SeaMonkey and restarting it brought things back to normal.

052 ipinfo network
The window of ipinfo network displays in a strange full screen.
There is no response when pushing one or other tab.

Hi all

Have been busy again Laughing

Just edited the 052.sfs to customize it to a particular machine by removing unused modules (from a standard sfs), by running "lsmod" & "lspci -k" in terminal to show what modules were actually being used and deleting the unused ones (made a spare copy of the sfs first just in case)

It has not affected the functioning of the machine at all (if anything it seems a bit more responsive) , and here are the results:
original sfs = 112mb custom sfs = 92mb which is a difference of 20mb (17%) less

then straight after loading the sfs with "pfix=ram" I ran "free" in terminal to see the amount of ram it occupied, (did it 3 times with each sfs and took the average)
original sfs = 284mb custom sfs = 191mb which is a difference of 93mb (32%) less

I know this ties the custom sfs to a particular machine without the ability to accept any new types of hardware, but I thought this may be of use to people with limited hardware resources.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your detective work Smile I'll look into the vlc issue. EDIT: ok, vlc issue is fixed, you'll need to update PPM

abushcrafter
Is there any solution you know of for your issue? I wonder if it's something in the shutdown script? I see it happens in LHP too..

Béèm
I'll check out that ipinfo bug

ttuuxxx
*I think* I got all your programs uploaded, take a look if you want on the brainwavescentral site. I have to update smokey01.. later today.. oh and I updated namaroka with ttuuxxx' fixes Stripe, I just removed the link to Smokey01 because it's not up to date.

Cheers
