Slacko 5.5 poor video performance in Compaq Armada M700

#1 Post by evansdimo »

Hello to all in forum.

I have an old laptop "Compaq Armada M700" with a Pentium 3 at 497MHz , 320mb memory and an ATI Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x.

Installed Slacko puppy 5.5 (full install at hard disk.)

Everything went fine but video performance is poor (due to the need of hardware accelaration?) Flash video on youtube really poor... Small videos poor on player... Xorg drivers work but cant find a way to install ATIs drivers.

Do i ask too much from a Pentium 3 or is it possible with Slacko to see some good performance in videos. What do i need to do?

I also installed Zorin lite edition and video performance is working a lot better but i got no internet and really like Slacko a lot better.

Sorry for the long post and looking forward for any answer.

I've got M700s with 450 and 850 cpus. (Currently running a Toshiba Satellite Pro M10, and moved the HDD over).
Slacko is not a good choice on either (although only did frugal installs), but the other suggestions are better.
Just in case Starhawk is lurking around, I'll get in first and say 214X ran best on the 450
Try using one of the youtube downloaders, or if that doesn't appeal, try lowering the resolution on YouTube to the lowest. This worked well with the 850, but I wouldn't expect a lot from your machine though.

for youtube there's a greasemonkey script called viewtube, that plays youtube videos with mplayer in the browser .....

this is for firefox

this is for seamonkey

then install the viewtube script (by clicking the install button on the page)
