Ok I feel pretty dumb for missing this for a while now.

I bounced around all over this forum,Ubuntu,Mint,Debian,opensuse etc.

nothing worked to get sound and then I started from scratch again and overlooked this simple process.
Right click on the volume speaker in the tray, select full window and scroll down and UNCHECK external amplifier..

I can laugh now but was going crazy messing with all the files and alsamixer etc..

Think I need a nap........

Let me know if it works on more than the mx series gateways.
