PostPosted: Fri 16 Mar 2018, 20:30    Post subject: Think Twice before Buying an Odys Computer

Hi Kiramm,

I could find no reports indicating that any Odys computer provided satisfactory performance under any Linux distribution. So, my recommendation is that if you haven't already purchased the computer, don't.

With roughly 85% of computer owned by people running Windows, computer manufacturers build computers to run Windows. I've estimated that taking into account the different components (graphic cards, wifi cards, motherboards, cpus, etc) a manufacturer can use the number of variations exceeds 500,000. Puppies are created by fans, each of whom may have no more than a couple of computers and, even after responding to problems posted by other fans, the chances of someone having run any of the dozens of Puppy variations on a computer exactly meeting the specifications of the one you're interested in are pretty slim.

That said, the Devs at Kernel.org strive to keep pace with computer evolution and create operating systems which run on them; and the Devs working on Puppies strive to keep pace with the Kernels created by Kernel.org. That a specific Puppy will run on every computer is slim. But the probability that some Puppy will run is high provided the computer manufacturer has used components for which drivers are found under some Kernel created by the Kernel Devs.

If you haven't bought a computer, the first thing to do is find out whether any Linux distro has provided satisfactory performance. As you are interested in Tahrpup, but might be inclined to try a Xenialpup, both of which are woof-built from Ubuntu binaries, and I am more familiar with Ubuntu than other Distros, I googled “Odys Fustion Ubuntu.” I only found one post the gist of which was the poster was having difficulty getting the computer's UEFI mechanism to recognize and boot Ubuntu even though the Ubuntu included the required UEFI signature. The thread was terminated without resolution supposedly as it “had more to do with UEFI than Ubuntu”. [I read this to mean that none of Ubuntu's higher-ups had a solution and did not want a long thread indicating failure].

Expanding the search to “Odys Fusion Linux”, I ran across an Arch Linux thread. Arch Linux, even though it is very different from Puppies, or perhaps because it is a distro for more technically minded users, often provides insight and sometimes solutions which can be applied running Puppies. At any rate, while the owner of the computer had been able to boot to desktop, the computer so booted had no networking capability -- which means that there were no drivers for whatever network hardware was used in the computer. I could find no post providing what networking 'card' was used.

As I wrote at the beginning, I could find no report indicating that any Odys computer provided satisfactory performance under any Linux distribution.

Manufacturers are free to market solely for Windows, and to choose components which only run under Windows. The best we can do is avoid their products.

But if you've already purchased the computer, don't despair, Smile yet Sad . As I mentioned, the Devs at Kernel.org try to include in their new Kernels the capability of running under new computers. The absence of posts may mean that owners trying Linux had no reason to post. While I'm guessing Tahrpup won't run, maybe Xenialpup – or Xenialpup after upgrading its kernel-- will. Or perhaps as sailor Enceladus suggested, maybe Bionic Beaver can. But I think it's more likely that you'll need a Puppy which already includes the signature required by UEFI computers. These are identified by the designation “uefi” in their names: e.g., xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso. Bionicpup is still in alpha.

And words of advice before you end up with a 277 EU brick. First see if any Puppy you're interested in will run from a USB-Stick before attempting to install it to a hard-drive. And read this thread, following its links. I try to keep it up to date regarding the problems encountered booting UEFI computers and, where possible, solutions. http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=858159#858159

LICK will help you by installing an playing Puppy from your Windows Seven NTFS partition.
End of session, either you don't save at all or you find suddenly an USB pendrive Here, hidden behind your cigarettes. Insert it, and pupsave to it. Nice !

I read this to mean that none of Ubuntu's higher-ups had a solution and did not want a long thread indicating failure].

that means new cool lloking laptops probably
dont work with lniux or they just work with newest ubunts but then this pupps are like hotelloby bbest slacko 64 with almost no programs?

or that xenial pup can run all tahr sfs pets??? they are all written for 32bit

i rember that very older version wubi ubuntu didn t work on this laptop

i tried all possible wubis ubuntus mitns combiations ...

has any body get tahr x 2.0 to run on windows 10

seems more have my problems:
Mike_Walsh,

What you say in post #3 is all the stuff I do not know how to do and do not understand. I know that for a computer on Windows Vista (I do not know how this relates to UEFI), we can startup the computer, press or pulse-press the F12 key, reach the boot options menu, and choose to continue the startup to Compact Disc on which there may be a live-linux operating system to try and play with. Contrary to that, a computer on Windows 10, which is present on UEFI computers, will not give us the easy way to get to the boot options menu for startup into whatever drive we want. Instead we have all this secure-boot and legacy boot stuff; and if we turn off secure boot, maybe later we could turn it back on or we cannot turn it back on, so therefore we make our computer less secure. I wish there were a clear, organized way to study and learn this. Internet search attempts at this have given inconclusive and unclear directions and explanations.

i thank verrry

Hmm, looks like I haven't been getting notifications from this site again...

what type of installation you will be LICK - FRUGAL or FULL? And again. In LICK v1.2 what Grub used. Thank you

LICK does a frugal install. If you have a UEFI computer (usually, came with Windows 8+), it installs grub2, otherwise your computer has BIOS, where grub4dos is used.

kiramm:

I didn't know lighthouse didn't work correctly. I'll investigate later, I've created an issue to remind me. Thanks for letting me know!

It looks like mikeslr answered most of your other questions. I just wanted to mention that LICK does support secure boot, and Windows versions up to Windows 10.

LICK 1.3 has been released

You can update by installing the new LICK exe file without uninstalling the old LICK, or by unzipping the zip file and deleting the unzipped directory of the old LICK.

The latest release supports installing from a directory/CD drive, fixes drag-and-drop on some systems by using the Windows drag-and-drop API directly, and a few other fixes and cleanups.

Try Xenialpup64 7.5
Tahrpup may not have all the needed support for very new computers. It is using an old Linux kernel.
Xenialpup has much newer Linux kernel that has support for newer hardware.

The specs of this computer would help to determine what is needed for graphics.
