Wary 0.9.2 (092) feedback Subject description: Testers welcome! |
|
Announced on my blog:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01883
I will appreciate testing of this fellow. Do take particular note of the two buglets I mention in my blog announcment:
First time you boot Wary, open a terminal window and type these:
| Code: | # echo -n "1" > /var/local/sns/rx_bytes_session
# ln -s depmod /sbin/depmod-FULL |
Good, it is now on the NLUUG mirror:

Just a quick run of Wary 092 (2.6.34.6) live pfix=ram on my main Linux box.
Initial boot had working internet and sound and I easily got my desired screen resolution.
At the moment I'm making this post and burning the 2.6.30.5 iso to disc,so things appear to be working pretty well.
Ran the 2 commands too.

I found another little bug. Testing PPM (Puppy Package Manager), after installing a package it reported 'dpkg' missing dependency.
No, that should not be. I have fixed it in Woof. It is easy, you can also fix it -- edit file /root/.packages/PKGS_MANAGEMENT and insert "dpkg" as shown here:
| Code: | | PKG_NAME_IGNORE="dpkg petget sysfiles ${IGNORE_x11proto}${IGNORE_xorg73_base}${IGNORE_xserver_xorg_partialcut_t2}${IGNORE_xf86-video-ati-extra}" |
...interesting thing, note the line above that is commented-out. I had to do that, if that line is left in then there is a syntax error. I have no idea why. You can see it for yourself if you uncomment that line then run PPM in a terminal and install a pkg:
| Code: | | # /usr/local/petget/pkg_chooser.sh |

Alleluhia - sound is back again!
| Quote: | | # ln -s depmod /sbin/depmod-FULL | gives me:
ln target ' depmod /sbin/depmod-FULL' is not a directory
running off liveCD.
Otherwise, very fast - just needs a decent browser...

James C,
I just tested it, mesa pkg installed ok for me.
But, it makes me think though, PPM should put up more information why the install failed -- like corrupted download for example. I have added that to the to-do list.
Note that the 'bluefish' pkg in the puppy-wary5' repo is broken. This was compiled in T2 and the PET auto-generated, but it has lost some needed images along the way.
Anyone want to volunteer to compile Bluefish in Wary 092 and create a PET? If you do, you can use this old PET as a guide to what the insides will look like:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/pet_packages-4/bluefish-1.0.7.pet
...that's a very old version though.
Note, you can open up a PET pkg to see it's insides by doing this:
| Code: | | # tar -zxf bluefish-1.0.7.pet |
...in a Linux partition of course. Also it is generally best not to work in the layered filesystem (such as in /root) but on a mounted Linux partition.
Anyone else who would like to create a PET for Wary 092, you are most welcome. You could post it here and it might end up in the official 'puppy-wary5' repo.
There is a web page that explains how to create a PET package, though note that it needs to be updated:
http://puppylinux.com/development/createpet.htm
We have nVidia X PETs, but not yet any ATI X driver PET. This will be a welcome addition!
The cupboard is still a bit bare in the 'puppy-wary5' repo, so all help with stocking it will be welcome. Remember, Wary5 is a long-term supported version, so PETs are likely to be in-use for a long time, as is the 'puppy-wary5' repo.

Oh, one important point about creating PETs for Wary. I will only accept PETs that are compiled in Wary, not binary files obtained from elsewhere.
Also, it is most desirable when compiling a package to do so in the most pristine Wary system possible. Do not install the Intel or nVidia X upgrade packages, or ATI for that matter -- these introduce new openGL and some other files that make the environment potentially incompatible with other hardware.

Agere HDA old version - should be 2.1.80 |
|
Hi Barry K (& Richard rerwin)
Wary092 K2.6.34 on HP550 laptop, frugal install, B43 wep wifi, Agere HDA modem.
Good news - all started up OK - wifi, touchpad and battery tray all working as expected (except wifi still disassociates after a time).
However, this puppy has the old 2.1.60 version of the Agere HDA modem driver rather than the 2.1.80 version that Richard provided and I have been helping him to test. As a result modem-stats crashes and no modem in pupdial.....
Thanks
Peter

No problems booting live cd after full install, like I had with 090.
No problems with mms streams.

'34 kernel. Sound muted at first so had to be set up. This missing from xorg.conf and has to be included to enable transparency effects
| Code: | Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "1"
EndSection |
Abiword ok
gnumeric ok
Have you thought about playing with/including the Ubuntu font? Its cool....

Working fine. Seems faster than Wary 0.90.
Has a spot of trouble with DaveS's LibreOffice sfs. This works beautifully in Lucid 511, but crashes this latest Wary in spectacular style, requiring a system reset. Then swapped out the LibreOffice sfs for Jemimah's OpenOffice 3.2.1. whereupon everything was back to normal. My latest UbuntuFont.pet works OK here too.
The version of Seamonkey is still held at 2.0.7. This version has a tendency to instability, bombing out on a regular basis. The 2.0.8 version (actually 2.0.9 now) has now solved this.
Has anyone by any chance got a proven set of configure options for Seamonkey? If so I'll have a go at compiling the latest version over the weekend. If not, I'll try it anyway.

This was the case with the '35 kernel but not the '30 kernel. It was hoped the '34 kernel would fix it. Other versions of OpenOffice also crash it. Have not tried Jemimas.

@daveS
Has your version of LibreOffice got a JRE built in?
If so there may be a conflict with the Oracle Java version that I use here.
The problem seemed to arise when I started LibreOffice for the first time and complained that no Java was available.
I then inadvertently pointed it to a 64-bit JRE that I had earlier downloaded for Maverick - silly me! No joy of course.
Don't know though. Might also be a kernel related problem just as you say.
With this Oracle takeover of Java, who knows what sort of problems are going to manifest themselves in Puppy Linux as well as other Linuces.

Wary 0.9.2 (092) feedback Subject description: ati card |
|
I'm running wary 092 kernel 2.6.34.6 from a 4gb usb drive.I've
installed the devx and kernel sources sfs and the
ati-driver-installer-10-10-x86.x86_64.run file.
The builtin wireless rt2860 on this pc showed up as wlan0 on the connect screen
but it didn't work, an rt73usb linksys adaptor showed up as wlan1 and it is
working fine.
I put a movie dvd in the drive and just clicking on it brought up Ogle
and the dvd menus screen came up, the movie plays at full screen.
The video upgrade wizard advises installing the commercial ATI driver
even though it's already installed, nexuiz, openarena, and sauerbraten are
on the hard drive and they work fine.
This pc is not in the target group for Wary (too new) but it's working
pretty well so I'm going to use it
edit: Videos at cnn played okay in seamonkey 209 but there was no sound.
I downloaded the latest libflashplayer.so from adobe and put it in
~/.usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and the cnn videos have sound now.
The old libflashplayer.so was 10 mb and the new one is 12 mb.

Just noticed that OpenOffice 3.2.1 (Jemimah's) also crashes in this Wary k2.6.34.6, so it's not just DaveS's LibreOffice to blame.
This has happened just recently with a version of Puppy/Wary - can't rmember which one exactly.
No joy so far with building Seamonkey 2.0.9. Got it to configure (thanks to Coolpup), but won't build yet. Source is the stable version of 2.0.9. from Mozilla.
Normally there is a directory called .openoffice that gets created in /root. This does not seem to get created here, so I wonder if this has got anything to do with the AUFS problems that Barry has seen recently.
