Is underdog in Puppy2 alpha?

#1 Post by tronkel »

I wonder if underdog has been implemented in Puppy2 Alpha.

I have created a plain text file called underdog.lnx containing the text "hda2" on which a KDE version of Vector Linux resides, but no joy from any KDE appliation e.g. Konqueror.

Am I missing out anything here?

Thanks

Yes, it's implemented.
The How Puppy Works page has extracts from the boot script that shows how
it is located:
http://www.puppylinux.com/development/h ... works.html

underdog.lnx needs to be in the same location as the personal storage file,
pup_save.3fs, but looking at the script I see a bug...
I tested it booting Puppy from a usb Flash drive, in which case Puppy runs in
PUPMODE 13.

When you boot from live-CD first time, if you choose to save the session
to ide hard drive partition, Puppy will next bootup in PUPMODE 12, which is
not tested for in the script. If you had chosen to save the session to a USB drive
then Puppy would have rebooted in PUPMODE 13, or if chose to save to DVD (multisession) then would come up in PUPMODE 77, and both 13 and 77 are
tested for in the script.

So, in a nutshell, Puppy isn't finding your underdog.lnx file, looking in
the initial ramdisk, which is readonly.

This is being posted from within Konqueror running out of Vector Linux SOHO 5.1 with Puppy in control. The pup_save file and underdog are on a CF card in a USB adapter - as Barry said, it would not work with the files on hda. The only change necessary was to add /opt/kde/bin to the PATH. This has enabled Puppy to run Firefox, Open Office and a heap of Kxx applications, including KMyMoney.
It might just be an impression, but the "underdog" environment seems to run more slowly than using chroot to access Vector.
Regardless, there are lots of new things to explore for dedicated tinkerers. And the thought of 60MB of Puppy riding herd on 2+GB of Vector gives you a sense of power. Must get back to my game of battleships, or is it space aliens, or is it.... :D

Yes, when I first posted this underdog thing on the developer
news page, I had the feeling of great potential in it, though I
wasn't quite sure in what way.
Yes, at the very least, it's going to be a great new avenue of
exploration for Puppy "tinkerers".
