James C, jim1911, and ttuuxxx. I think reverting to the original ntfs-3g that was used in Lucid is solving the problem. Thanks everyone.

ntfs-3g version problem

#2447 Post by shinobar »

Add 'silent' option in /bin/mount at line 52:
ntfs-3g $CMDPRMS -o umask=0,no_def_opts,silent 2>/tmp/ntfsmnterr${MYPID}.txt
and line 62:
ntfs-3g $CMDPRMS -o force,umask=0,no_def_opts,silent 2>/tmp/ntfsmnterr${MYPID}.txt
It solves the problem in Luci-244.
If we also intend to replace the ntfs-3g in initial ram file system, we also need to modify the 'init' script in the initial ram file system.
Note that ntfs-3g in initial ram file system is to be compiled with ulibc instead of normal libc.

Of course reverting the ntfs-3g version is also another solution.

I think shinobar's "timezone fix" is working in luci-245pre. But the time zones give me a headache going ahead and behind. It also seems to be working with UTC time and with Psync.

My computer is set to 3:50 and my timezone to US/Central. The time that shows is 21:50. Since I am 6 hours behind gmt that seems right. It seems to be persistent even with Psync active.

*And* PupSetclock seems to be fitting right into the mix. I changed to 12 hour and also changed the color of the clock and both were persistent on reboot. Whoa, now to see what happens if Psync is running also.

So far so good. Remember that this is a modified luci-245pre that I am using.

The hardware clock on this computer runs on UTC and the timezone is Australia/Sydney.

On bootup the clock initially shows UTC but when configured from the Gui it changes briefly to about right but then reverts to UTC.
Isn't there a checkbox for Local or UTC Hardware time? That doesn't help?
I don't understand?
UTC is NOT the current time IN ones system. THE RTC sets the OS time by default system time
The only time zones are really neaded, are when talking to servers in another part of the world ,
The default for any Puppy should default to the current CMOS/RTC time.
Like I said RTC!!! Real time clock. Unless somebody is trying to run puppy on an old!! 8088 system?

The way I understand it, the system clock can be set to local time (as Windows does) or to UTC time.

You are advocating that it be set to local time I gather ;-)

Ps don't forget to restart X or better yet reboot with it installed.
Well ttuuxxx, I owe you yet another Orval.
I think if you drink all those I promised, you'll get really drunk.
A reboot was needed indeed.

In the meantime I had tried the 2010.10.2 version of ntfs-3g, but the issue is still there also.

I don't know all the internal working, but my logic says, adding the silent option only will mask the 'error' to display. A bit like putting your had in the sand.

I imagine that if there is a real problem, that message is masked also and one could work in an environment with errors and corrupt his partition, no?

Wouldn't it be better to go to the source of the issue and see with the ntfs-2g development group?
As I stated, with the 2010.10.2 version the issue is still there.

Don't worry. Remember the error messages. In most case, to make the owner and permission same as the Linux partitions are impossible for Windows partitions, NTFS/VFAT.
For the sake, and only for this sake, there is 'quiet' mount option for VFAT, and 'silent' option for ntfs-3g. As for other errors, it returns error code.
http://linux.die.net/man/8/ntfs-3g
silent
Do nothing on chmod and chown operations, but do not return error. This option is on by default.
But it seems not on by default in the latest version of ntfs-3g...Yes, you can call it a bug.

Another document:
http://b.andre.pagesperso-orange.fr/permissions.html
See the script /usr/local/bin/drive_all. At line 308 or so, you can find the 'quiet' mount option for VFAT.

yes but I downloaded that link posted above and its a repackage of debian packages, the plugins have the all the dev files, still has the man packages and about 50% documents are debian related documents not actual gnumeric, plus being a debian gnumeric it would be around 30% larger than need be. It uses extra libs that add extra deps. If playdayz is serous that he still would like a few extra KB this wouldn't be the way to go around doing this.
I'll see what I can do.

Here's a Gnumeric I compiled on luci, its 1MB less extracted than the previous posted above. I removed the a few deps that puppy 4 series didn't need to run gnumeric and from what I've seen it works fine. Actually its a bit smaller and newer than the quirky version which is always nice to see :)
you need all three apps to run it, It replaces 3 apps in Luci.

Make sure the new libgsf doesn't break stuff - I compiled the latest wv/libgsf/goffice on spup and Abiword failed to compile. Some stuff that depend on libgsf show errors.

The older gtk could be the reason, though

abiword still works, because its the same model number just a slightly newer version lld abiword ---> libgsf-1.so.114 => /usr/lib/libgsf-1.so.114

luci version libgsf-1.so.114.0.16
new version libgsf-1.so.114.0.18

should be 100% ok, I tested abiword before uploading the packages and it worked just fine.
If anyone wants me to compile abiword without Goffice just ask.
