luci-241 on HP550 laptop with Intel HDA sound...

tried both a new lucisave and an update from the luci-240 lucisave

in both cases sound is muted after reboot

inpu-001 which uses same woof (I think?) does not have this sound problem - see attached screen pic

cheers

Quickpet 4rc4 is out!

see here

-some improvements to graphics detection
-some Lobster proofing
-there are some translation additions, you will see, not many

To test is the new graphics detection and one click download, and a choice not to... there is advice that there are other drivers (such as the FULL 260 driver, vdpau support etc)

Cheers

Playdayz sent me a pm about this muted-sound-on-reboot problem, here is my reply to him:

Quote:
This means that the volume restore is not running properly at reboot. I used to get that with rerwin's scripts, and my zzz fixed that.

However, my zzz seems to not be working properly in Luci, so perhaps one of your scripts is different from a pristine Woof?

The key thing to look for, is the /etc/init.d/10alsa script. It should be running this line:

alsactl -f /etc/asound.state restore #from /etc/asound.state.

You need to look at the code in 10alsa, is there anything that might be preventing that line from running?

Alternatively, it might have run, but failed, which was the problem I had with rerwin's scripts. In that case, if you look in /var/log/messages, you might see a "segfault" message for alsactl.

If alsactl is segfaulting, it most likely means that alsactl is being run too soon. This was my problem. Rerwin's scripts imposed a delay that caused alsa to take much longer to load its modules and be ready to use.

Let me know if you are getting the segfault.

This problem was what prompted me to create my zzz package in the first place. It fixes the sound problem in my Quirky and Wary, but something is different in Lupu that causes zzz to not work properly.

Anyway, regarding alsactl, if you are getting the segfault at bootup, try running it in a terminal:

# alsactl -f /etc/asound.state restore #from /etc/asound.state.

...if it works, then you know that /etc/init.d/10alsa is trying to run it too soon.

Barry, why don't you move the ALSA stuff to delayed run or xinitrc? After all, sound is needed once you get to the desktop, not earlier. Of course, there are rear-corner cases, such as pfix=nox fans ... but this code could be placed pretty much anywhere. Even /etc/profile is good enough.

In fact, /etc/profile is a good location - it runs when the shell starts, so if the code goes there, it's the first thing that runs after inittab.

Luci 241 or 240, (without or with zzz)

sound worked and played on first boot
tray is 'no muted' but it's the CD slider, not the PPM
I must do : sound > right clic > 'config window' > Tray Slider > choice 'PPM'
Gnome-Mplayer or VLC are OK
.......
rebooted :
Tray icon : 'muted' . Always the CD slider
right clic > 'config window' > Tray Slider > Impossible to get choice 'PPM'. Only CD or 'capture' sliders
But with Alsa 'PPM' slider is displayed and sliders are good.

Gnome-Mplayer and VLC are OK, not tray icon

for those with reboot sound issues, and those without,
..please run this in a terminal (NOT in full installs, unless you backup the file first) only in luci-241 and 240.

Code:
 rm -f /etc/init.d/10alsa

*reboot
*report success or failure

if you need to restore.. ie- fails (frugal types only, usb included) type:

Code:
cp -f /initrd/pup_ro2/etc/init.d/10alsa /etc/init.d/10alsa

Cheers

(note, it isn't the correct fix as woof goes, but it may have to do)

Hi playdayz,

With 241 when I chose the FlatOrange icon set there was no specific "Quickpet" icon in that set.

I only mention it as there may be wider repercussions since all icons were as "unset" on rebooting.

That was using JWM and saving back to a DVD+R.

My regards

I had other problems with 240 and 241, but they have already been reported here.

Doesn't the current .pet format support installation scripts? Can't you just keep the standard mode as Xv and add
Code:
mv /root/.mplayer/config /root/.mplayer/config.bak
cat /root/.mplayer/config.bak | sed s/'x11'/'xv'/g > /root/.mplayer/config

to the NVIDIA driver .pet installation scripts? It would give everyone the default Xv acceleration by default and disable it when the nv drivers are installed.

I think I sent you a PM about this in reply to one of yours, but I could be mistaken.

I just tried this on computer 3 from my earlier message and no change, retrovol is showing 100% but sound is very faint and setup alsa sound wizard must be run.

Hi 01Micko

Works here - but had to go into retrovol and reset before the reboot - but settings were maintained then through reboot.

Thanks

The preset of video output is better to be blank, i think.
Then the Gnome-mplayer automatically select proper output, 'xv' or 'x11'.
Only an issue is it pops up warning for the 'nv' driver, but it works.

Thanks for testing peebee, Lobster, Billtoo

On one of my machines the sound 'just worked' after the fix, the other I had to do what you described peebee. At least we are some way toward fixing the issue.

Cheers

Grateful if you could say what it's supposed to do and what I should be looking out for. Difficult to report results otherwise.

It is actually a simple syntax error in a bad place. What we are concerned with is mainly whether it makes a difference to network connection being persistent and sound being persistent (not muted on reboot). Anything else that you might notice could be helpful to the developers.

Installed it on both machines and sound is still muted after a reboot.

I didn't have any problems with networking on any of the versions of Luci I've tried, including 240, so best I can say is that at least the zzz pet hasn't broken it. Wink
