No sound from Puppy 4.3.1 |
|
I can load many of my Linux live distributions, even some quite old ones, and they come straight up with the volume blasting...
Mepis is one and PCLinuxos is another.
If I load Puppy 4.3.1 , I get the sound of silence!!!
I have ordered a new ver 5.1 disk, but I'm not too hopeful!
Why am I getting no sound out of the same machine, with the same hardware attached with Puppy?

Check that the relevant sliders are all set high: MENU>MULTIMEDIA>ALSA MIXER
and that the toggle at the foot of each slider is not off. MM=off, OO=on

You haven't told us the type of Processor you're running. Is it Pentium 3, 4, Core-Duo, or what ?
If you're computer is P3 or P4 you should try the Puppy 431 Retro versions, which are available for free here:
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr/puppylinux/puppy-4.3.1/special-puppies/pup-431-k2.6.21.7-scsi-intel_modems.iso
http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr/puppylinux/puppy-4.3.1/special-puppies/pup-431-k2.6.25.16-intel_modems.iso
Run md5sum on the downloads and verify them here:

Try the "pcm" and other sliders in Alsa mixer.

Sound problem with Puppy 4.3.1 Subject description: Sound problem with Puppy 4.3.1 |

... Success!!
Selecting the Alsamixer just flashed up a momentary text box at the top of the screen that vanished before it could be read!
...The Zmixer however showed the PCM box as OFF. Turning it ON fixed the problem!
...So that problem seems fixed!
PS. I think the processor is a Pentium 4 but not sure!
My thanks to all who tried to assist!Duh!

MENU>SYSTEM>HARDINFO
Good to know you found the problem. These default OFF things can be well hidden.

After clicking MENU > SYSTEM > HARDINFO you will see on the left a list and somewhere near the top there will be PROCESSOR. If you click on that it should tell you what type of CPU the 'puter has.
If the CPU is Pentium 2, 3 or 4 and you have further problems, try the 2 different Puppy 431 Retro versions I gave the links for the other day. The Retro versions are the same bundle of programs as Puppy 431, but built around older Linux Kernels which work better with older hardware.

Yes, I actually discovered that it is a Pentium 4 just after my last posting but made no further comment on it since the problem seems to now be cured, many thanks to you blokes!
