Playstation3 & Puppy?

#1 Post by edoc »

From what I read here the Sony Playstation3 represents some heavy
computing firepower for short money -- they expect to make their big
money via games and accessories -- like car sales I suppose.

Meanwhile we may be able to acquire some neat platforms cheap.

Anyone planning to grab one of these and optimize Puppy for it?

I'm not familiar with it. Does Playstation3 have PCI card slots, or USB ports, or a DVD burner?

It barely has a compiler . . .
the octopiler . . .

It has USB and uses new Blu-ray next generation DVD's (read only)
It may have been announced but it is likely to be Autumn (fall) for Japan and Spring 2007 for Europe before it is available.

The Cell processor is something special - without doubt. IBM co-developers will also be producing computers with the Cell processor. The idea is to eventually have them in cell/mobile phones - in fact in everything . . .

The P3 will also have a Linux available.

Keep an eye on it by all means . . .

and watch out for the Nintendo Revolution too . . .

I believe that most game consols including the Sony and MS XBox now use a PowerPC processor and not an X86 based processor. PowerPC is what Apple just dropped. So while there are some versions of Linux available for PPC, I doubt if Puppy will ever run on one.
