How to load 511-devx.sfs at bootup of luma-001 ?

There is a gtk-2.20.1 already at http://www.gtk.org/download-linux.html

I could think of renaming the 511-devx.sfs but how exactly ? The same occured at luci-218-219 to load the 222-devx.sfs

What will improvements in usability and applications be?
If this is just a "Keeping up with the Jones (Ubuntu)" attempt, I cannot see it taking time of developers from development of Puppy 6.

I do not want to download it for a test if it is just a lookalike of Puppy 511 with a new background.

On March 29, 2010 Barry proposed Lucid Puppy 5.0
On May 15, six weeks later, on deadline, Lucid Puppy 5.0 released
It contained the very popular innovations of
1.Browser-Installer for one-click choice of browser
2.Quickpet for one-click installation of tested and configured top notch programs

On AUG 15, Lucid Puppy 5.1 was released
It contained another very popular set of innovations and was #2 in Distrowatch for 7 straight days.
1.Boot to desktop, reliably
2.Full PPM of top flight latest and greatest LInux programs, tested and configured, such as Stellarium, Scribus, SMplayer, Samba, Skype, and those are just the S's, and many more
3.Graphics Drivers for High performance were recommended and available with one-click
4.Icewm option,
5.LupuNews/Instant Update

And you ask me if there is going to be anything new?

Perhaps I am just naive but this seems like a pretty good record of innovation in just 5 months and two releases. IMHO, it will be a most impressive thing to see Puppy6 top that record of pure innovation.

As I said in the first message of this thread, it is not certain that there will be a Lucid Maverick/Meerkat. I admit to being puzzled and bemused why so many seem so anxious to replace Lucid and so few developers seem willing to put in the few hours that it would take to make a contribution. I have a small list of projects that would help if anyone wants to contact me. I don't ant to give the wrong impression: tempestuous helps with thew drivers and so does catdude, and tronkel helps fill the PPM with good programs. Others as well.

BTW, in the next version Mplayer and Pmusic are both working., but there are big changes so I can't just post a pet to update.

Speaking just for myself,I didn't think of this as a replacement for Lucid Puppy 5.11......more like a sneak peek at the future. I was figuring work was going to continue toward Lucid 5.1.2 and then Lucid 5.20....but what do I know, I'm just a tester.

Yes. The timing will say if there will be a 5.1.2--with a couple of new editions of Woof then a 5.1.2 could be released around early October. But Maverick Meerkaat Ubuntu 10.10 will be released on 10/10/10 so it might be better to go for a 5.2 (being Lucid Meerkaat--that is, Lucid built with the Meerkaat binaries instead of the Lynx binaries) around All Hallows (OCT 31). That depends on response among other things. Even if there is not enough response for a Lucid Meerkaat then I can keep updating Lucid Puppy with subsequent Woof's. After all, Lucid Lynx Ubuntu 10.04 is a Long Term Support release that will be supported for 3 years total. Thanks JamesC for everything you have done.

tubeguy, in my experience Audacious freezes constantly with Icewm. I am usually using the LXDE Light that I posted in Additional Software: Desktop and Audacious seems to behave.

PUPPY is still Rank 11 ++ the first to come after the large distros ++ Congratulations !

Further : copying the lupu_devx_511.sfs to / and renaming it to luma_devx_001.sfs made bootmanager agreeing to load it.

gtk+2.20.1 , glib-2.24.2 and pango-1.28.1 uncompressed and after running the configure shellscript are pretty huge : 806M personal storage, free space= 352M
Even gtk+2.18.7 needs glib >=2.21.3 and I don`t know how to go on with output like this at the moment :

Those newer kernels has switcheroo possibility in kernel, which enables the switching of dual graphics. Handy with these new laptops. If there is aim to use newer kernel, I suggest to enable that in kernel and also rfkill and hibernate. They are lacking in luci 2.6.33.2. I compiled them to my patched kernel but I had quite a struggle with initrd.gz and I still dont know how it should be updated properly after compiling. With try and error I got it working.

I tried the development version of Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat server version when I struggled with problems with my laptop buggy Bios. I checked if newer kernel would help. No chance. Luckily bios update fixed my problems at last. But it was funny to install X and gnome from commandline without really knowing how to do it. The result was probably not the official one but it worked. Switcheroo was not enabled in the version I tried if I remember right.

Yes, but I wouldn't bother Karl. In luma there are the binaries from ubuntu 10.10 and in lupu they are from 10.04. Luma-001 is brand new, so the devx will come in due time Thanks.

pemasu, the switchable kernels are a good idea to explore now. I think it is catdude who said he is already using an older kernel with lupu. Thanks.

Lucid and Woof. In one sense Lucid is and has been a demonstration vehicle for Woof to be able to make a Puppy out of any given set of binaries. It is also a test vehicle for Woof. That is why we will keep applying the latest Woof--and also to get the advancements of each new version of Woof. I do like to freeze things 3 weeks or so before a release, but after the release we are right back with the latest Woof. This is a difference between Lucid and the original dpup, which used Woof once and then worked on that build. IMO that is a good part of the reason that Barry asked Lucid to become Puppy 5. Now if dpup is revived that may or may not be the case again.

Funny questions occur to me. Why would Barry want a Puppy 6 that was not Woof-based? But if there were two Woof-based versions wouldn't they both be 5.2 or 5.5 or whatever because they would both be based on the latest Woof? This has been a possibility from the beginning. Concerning a

loaded seamonkey 2.07 and wbar 1.3.3 lucid pet from harddrive storage partition for saved pets etc

from command line i typed umount /dev/sda4 (my storage partition) and received following

I just saw that too, but by trying to unmount with a right click in Rox. Maybe we are using an old gtk lib? Possibly Wary's? Just a guess.

would it be possible to offer users a choice between midori and puppy browser like you provide in quickpet for the larger browers for more secure internet use

I don't know about other users, but I use Puppy Browser and bareview to run swf games. This works extremely well and does not give little inquisitive minds any reference to the internet if the internet icons have been removed rrom menus

plus it displays all of the welcome stuff without any problems on my machine
hp pent-4, 2.8 ghz, 1 gb memory, intel 82865g graphics controller

I am using the puppy browser lucid 1.1 pet and libgee-20081125-i486.pet
from lucid/luci series

As far as I can see the speculation about Puppy 6 is just Lobster feeding his incessant need for something to promote besides fish! (No offense, Ed).

My understanding is that Barry is forking Woof to experiment with a simpler naming system. That sounds like a good idea and qualifies as cutting edge development, not mainstream. Barry is using Quirky as the test bed for that development, which is why that fork was created in the first place. I'd be willing to bet that Lobster has extrapolated that information out to a new major release down the track - Puppy 6.

Doing that sort of speculative promotion in the public sections of the forum is counterproductive to the development effort IMHO. I faced the same issues with early 5.x series development while working on 4.2x - people saying why bother with further development of 4.x series if 5.x was just around the corner. I hosed down plenty of developer nervousness over that then too.

Forget it, Larry! Keep going with the eminently worthwhile Upup 5.x versions. In particular, keep Lucid alive and separate in keeping with the LTS nature of its binary compatibility. By all means plan for Maverick Puppy as 5.2 or 5.5 or whatever and leave 6.x where it belongs; in the cutting edge forum of future experimentation.
