I can build a "retro" Insidious for you if you want. I have no idea about these things, I'm not a big expert Smile

Just tell me which kernel you want, I'll do my best. You can choose between all the Puppy kernels - 2.6.18.1 (or whatever it was), 2.6.21.7, 2.6.25.16, 2.6.30.5, 2.6.31.14, 2.6.32.16, 2.6.33.2, 2.6.34.7, 2.6.35.7, .... and the Insidious Puppy kernel I compiled, 2.6.32.26.
I think that the 2.6.21.7 could be a good old one uniproc kernel and shutdowns wells the VIA EPIA M.

I try some of the method of change kernels with edit sfs but gives me kernel panic ...

Insidious Puppy is upladed. Discussion moves to that thread so we don't annoy the Lupu guys in the projects forum anymore :)

Just want to add that I made my first USB-Flash drives today and dpup-005 is booting on the asus netbook and the acer lappi.

I am very happy about that !!

I also made remastered isos bootable !!

The next would be 009 because of the debian kernel ...

The remastering confuses much because it didn't copy files from /root and /etc but this is a thing that has to be looked for inside the /usr/sbin/remasterpup2: Bourne shell script text executable file ...
CUPS permissions, .mrxvtrc just to mention :)

The abiword at 005 is 1.1 mb smaller than on 009 and it is running there also with the whole /usr/share/abiword-2.8/* files from 009.

Tried to compile abiword from debian source and that didn't worked either (lenny, squueze and sid). The debian patches are just about version and license and such and as my experience can tell inherit no bug patches  . I even had to compile several lib*.la for abiword. I lost two days for that !

And I found another way to get the 2barks working : (aplay /usr/share/audio/2barks.au &)
This seems to work:

Code: Select all

aplay /usr/share/audio/2barks.au
I am stucked at xorgwizard for now to fix the disordering of the screen if puppy boots in debug mode :

Code: Select all

if [ ! "`cat /tmp/bootkernel.log | grep 'Kernel command line'| grep -i 'debug'`" = "" ] || [ ! "`cat /tmp/bootkernel.log | grep 'Kernel command line'| grep -i 'loglevel'`" = "" ] ; then
dialog --sleep 15 --infobox "You have chosen the 'debug'\nor one of the\n'loglevel=4' or higher\nboot parameters.\nPlease let the dust settle a little.\nThe program will sleep now for 15 sec.\nbefore continuing with the Xorgwizard\nNote: The debugging output does not prevent the keys from working." 11 40

I want to update that I achieved 2barks at 005 by adding
set Speaker 75% unmute
set Speaker -21dB
to /etc/init.d/alsa
and
# Which slider to link with the tray_icon, identified by numid
#tray_control=37
tray_control=1
to /root/.retrovolrc

so I just placed the Startup part much earlier at delayedrun and kept 01mickos part and added
sleep 4
killall delayedrun
exit
to the end.

While geany was printing directly to printer without using the previewer
abiword wasn't printing directly :
# abiword /root/LBG-Praemienzahlung.doc --verbose=2 -p -
The '--print' option has been removed as of AbiWord 2.8. You can achieve the desired behavior using AbiWord's command-line conversion tools and then piping the output to a print spooler. Eg: 'abiword --to=ps --to-name=fd://1 myfile.txt | lpr'

Code: Select all

abiword --to=ps --to-name=fd://1 /root/LBG-Praemienzahlung.doc | lpr
from commandline printed directly to printer !!

Why would the Abiword developers hack a critical feature like this out of the GUI?

I don't use Abiword because of other failures in the handling of document files that OO handles correctly. This is yet another nail in the coffin of Abiword.

Hello, all.

As a late comment:

Over here, Puppy Squeeze performs better than its "insidious" counterpart. Puppy "insidious" looks and feels as if it was done in a hurry, for whatever reason.

Squeeze is not "no more", to contradict iguleder' opening sentence on p. 1 of this thread, as long as someone persists in using it! :D

When will stop focusing on the new for the sake of the new? Oh, well...

Just my two cents, of course.

TTYL.

I am still using dpup/squeeze until I can figure out how to port Seamonkey E-mail folders and the address book over to Claws and bookmarks to Midori, then I will switch this laptop to Fluppy 010.

BTW: I just learned that 511 SFS's will work in either dpup or Fluppy 010 merely by deleting the "_511" in the name.

Insidious was a neat effort by iguleder but due to the open-ended nature of his deployment with the Israeli security forces it may be "abandonware".

Fluppy is extremely well supported by Jemimah and appears to function well across everything from Netbooks to laptops to desktops. I was initially skeptical as I dislike some of the MS-like interface but have adjusted due to the technological qualities - and some recent tweaks she has made - and continues to make.

I 've been very skeptical to how Jemimah choose double click and such but she is worth all respect in choice of kernel and drivers for her Fluppy because I have now tested the following puppies

Puppy Linux lupu-517
Puppy Linux wary-500
Puppy Linux luci_246
Puppy Linux lupq-511
Puppy Linux spup
Puppy Linux dpup
Puppy studio (Ubuntu Studio) 3.1 based on Lucid 5.1.1
Puppy Linux macpup

And Jemimah's Fluppy and IguLeder's Inpu are the two that boot each time.
Maybe Pemasu's Puppy Linux lupu-513 also will boot each time, has not tested it that many times to know.

Jemimah's Fluppy is incredible in that it boots each time and the others can fail and fail and fail and drive me crazy.

So all the praise should go to her for caring about the small Netbooks.

Maybe it would be better to send money to her than to Barry for his versions does not boot unless it is me not getting how to. Jemimah's Fluppy don't need any know how to, they just boot.

The change to single-click was simple and I always do that as soon as I install. Double-clicking drives me nuts! ;-)

Yes now when I know how to then it is simple but to a newbie that is as Propeller Head confused like me it took months to get somebody to tell how to stop the craze.

So you recommend Squeeze instead of Inpu?

Is Squeeze better than Wary5 and Lupu217 and many others?

Where does one download it? I fail to find a download site. I guess I am just lazy. I looked at the first post but read it too hasty maybe?

There is a download for dpup-009.iso

is that the same as Squeeze? I have dpup-009.iso installed already.

I guess the word Squeeze made my head spin too many turns to get that it is the same thing. Phew something

I believe they are the same.

I have been beating on my dpup install for a while and have found it to be very stable, but I need to standardize on a single Puppy because I am supporting two netbooks and five laptops, it's too much of a nuisance to have to switch gears from machine to machine when troubleshooting or updating.

Dpup works good too but Inpu booted each time while Dpup failed a few times.

But that was on my gear. you are more lucky. I agree about one have to chose one because it get too messy to keep all of them with their own browser and email and such.

I have gone over to webmail to be able to use many. It failed to start a new claws or seamoneky mail and then not have access to it on next puppy. So I see your delemma there.

Anyone get cmake to work?

In dpup 009 or in Fluppy 013?

I am trying to load cutecom and the ReadMe says to use cmake.
# cmake .

Not tried in squeeze, but in lucid puppy I need to install cmake and cmake-data packages.
