?????? TEENpup's replacement needs hosting help

#1 Post by john biles »

I've tried to contact Caneri who normally hosts TEENpup while Softpedia grabs the iso but he hasn't replied. Is he alright?
Forum members in the past have offered to help host TEENpup and I need only short term help to bring ?????? to the world.
Please "PM" me if you can help. ?????? is now ready. :D

Hi John,

I'm always happy to host your pups, i thought i'd already mentioned that in the past....let me know where i can get it or i'll give you an ftp account so you can upload to my server yourself, if you wish - or are you still on dial-up only?

Legacy2009 and 2010Minibeta are still being hosted on my server.

cheers :D

Edit

we have to ask John on how to do frugal for older 214 systems???. I have Quirky and LupQ both of them works on my PB A6 doing frugal with each in their own subdir and the menu.lst looks like this.

I fail to get legacyos going using same menu.lst code that I use for Quirky and LupQ Lucid Puppy

So obviously something I did went wrong. What do I need to change?

default 0

timeout 10

title Quirky Linux
kernel (hd0,1)/quirky/vmlinuz psubdir=quirky
initrd (hd0,1)/quirky/initrd.gz
boot

title lupq Linux
kernel (hd0,1)/lupq/vmlinuz psubdir=lupq
initrd (hd0,1)/lupq/initrd.gz
boot

title legacyos Linux
kernel (hd0,1)/legacyos/vmlinuz psubdir=legacyos
initrd (hd0,1)/legacyos/initrd.gz
boot

Maybe I need something like this?

Moving vmlinuz and initrd out of the subdir and changing the menu.lst accordingly? Does one really need a separate boot subdir?

title legacyos linux
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=idehd pdev1=hda1 psubdir=legacyos ro vga=normal
initrd /initrd.gz

No that did not work either.

Kayan
If you have other puppies installed frugally then just copy how you did that and add to the menu.lst

Hello nooby,

This is what boots Legacy OS with it's default grub.

# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Legacy OS
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends

I hope this helps.

Sadly that one went into Kernel panic so something goes wrong.

Where do you put the files. Now I have all the files in c:/boot or what to name it. I did copy your suggestion to the best of my knowledge.

Any suggestion?

Thanks for caring about me

hello nooby,
/boot/grub/menu.lst is where menu.lst is located in Legacy OS.

Here's a long version. I don't know if it will be of help.

# GRUB configuration file '/boot/grub/menu.lst'.
# generated by 'grubconfig'. Mon Jul 19 13:56:31 2010
#
# The backup copy of the MBR for drive '/dev/hda' is
# here '/boot/grub/mbr.hda.30495'. You can restore it like this.
# dd if=/boot/grub/mbr.hda.30495 of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1
#
# Start GRUB global section
timeout 3
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
# End GRUB global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Legacy OS
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends
# Linux bootable partition config begins
title TEENpup 2009
root (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb2 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends
# Other bootable partition config begins
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
# Other bootable partition config ends

John, you have to be patient with me now.

Is that not when one do full install?

Both Kayan and Nooby ask for frugal install code in menu.lst

You mean me need two menu lists? The usual one that take care of puppy Quirky and Puppy LupQ and then a special one that looks like a full install version deep down in layers on boot?

Sounds very unlikely to me.

I did remember me had a teenpupmini that actually loads on another computer. HP/Compaq and I looked at that menu.lst and made a copy of that one but that one failed on the Packard Bell but do works on the HP

So it is a mystery. Is the reason being a 214 and not 341?

We need to find somebody good at frugal install of 214.

Where are the files supposed to be placed and what grub4DOS code is needed.

nooby,

if you put vmlinuz and initrd.gz in /boot and pup_214.sfs and zdrv_214.sfs in /, then this menu.lst entry

title Legacy OS
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PKEYS=se
initrd /boot/initrd.gz

should boot a frugal inst. on hda2 (GRUB (hd0,1)) (with swedish keyboard layout).

Nämen Whoa that was nice suggestion. I try it right away and report back within say 6 minutes or so. :)

Thanks indeed. That made it for me.

does it really need to have boot as the name of the dir would not legacy work?

Have you tested? pkeys did work for me.

But I am not used to that one need to click two times.

The resolution decided to go for the internal screen and not my external so
I need to tweek that oen but don't know how to.

But your sguggestion hopefully help all the others who failed too.

We only need to find that thread and tell them too.

You can put vmlinuz and initrd.gz in / as well (I suppose the directory can also be named "legacy"). Main thing is that 214 does not support having pup_214.sfs and zdrv_214.sfs in a sub-directory.

I always append the PKEYS=se statement to the kernel line - I like having my keyboard layout right from the start :).

I failed to get sound on my Packard Bell which has not been a problem for neither Quirky nor LupQ version of Lucid Puppy.

I tested two mixers and none gave me sound.

Legacy seems to not be able to shut down and reboot on my machine.

It stopped with a blinking cursor. So I did ctrl+alt+delete after waiting for a long long time. Back in Quirky now.

I guess me stay with quirky until somebody tell me why Legacy is better.
