As I prefer the older gtk 1.2 series Puppy Linux, I like your idea. What version would it be based on?

Might as well throw my 2 cents in:

Dillo as secondary browser
mtpaint
tkconvert
pfind (easier than gtkfind)
GQview picture viewer
MToolsFM (as well as ROX)
Htop process viewer
Games: Xgalaga, gtktetcolor, bubbles, gtkboard, ace, rubix, spider

There would need to be two very basic requirements:

Return to small .iso - MeanPup is your ideal model

Get rid of that appalling browser. Dillo, not as a secondary choice, and Netsurf may be just too small but I've seen others recently that might do the job - search.
Claws is your default email client.

Most folks miss out a .pdf reader. This is probably a mistake; better to cut elsewhere. It must be possible to read eg datasheets, public body info sites, legal docs, etc.

I hope you're not refering to Dillo as an "appalling browser". If so, I must take exception. I use it almost exclusively to surf because it is so fast! It's lightweight and easy to use and was included in Mean Puppy as a secondary browser. I accept its limitations as designed:

"Dillo is a minimalistic web browser particularly intended for older or slower computers and embedded systems. It supports only plain HTML/XHTML and images over HTTP; scripting is ignored entirely.[3] Dillo is available for Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS X. I've tried Netsurf, HV3, gtkmoz and even the newer Dillo2. Dillo-0.8.6 is great!

i always thought netsurf was gtk2.
dillo is ok how abount links2 as backup.
now i need to look for that old goblinx gtk1.2 theme.

anyone making an "Ubuntu GTK1.2 Remix" puplet.
i would like to see an dpup GTK1.2 Remix for an dsl feel.

Although designed for an entirely different reason, I suspect Mozilla's Fennec, now in alpha, might perfectly match requirements for compact Linux distros? Downside is that it might need considerable porting, processing, compressing and compiling by the gurus around here?

note: roxgtk1-2.2.pet has the ''running as user 'root' '' as well.

@Sage: Fennec is really not any better than just using gtkmozembed or seamonkey-1.1.19 browser only built on gtk1 unless you are using a mobile device with a small screen.

@Harii4: I'll need to find that link for gtk1 libs in the pupngo thread, but if I recall correctly, I removed the code to automatically display running as root, but left the ability to display the user if passed the parameter for it. What command are you using to start rox?

GTK 1.2 Puppy sounds a lot like my derivate named pulp.

Could you elaborate a bit on the patched GTK 1.2 rox?
Where can I find it?

Amigo Linux has most of the sources including rox. I can post a couple patches for no root warning and improved mimetypes.

the speed of pulp and rox gtk1.2 is amazing.
was an antix-mepis fan but pulp and dpup won me over to puppy.

i'm hope for an new one and a new pulp.

Did anyone cobble together this pup? Is there an iso to try? I've been tinkering with Pulp 03 and find it exciting and refreshing (and it is teaching me lots of under the hood stuff...). I'm aiming for a lightweight system that I can add Textmaker 2002 or FreeOffice 2012 onto (because they seem really quick to load and more capable than Abiword), along with a good pdf reader.
Also need a browser that supports javascript (wish I didn't need it) and https. On-the-fly Youtube is not a necessity, but a downloader would be handy.
I'm gradually getting pulp03 shaped as I want it, but maybe someone already has a nice iso like this? I'm thinking of something to run on say, laptops from around the year 2000 - 2008ish? (ie: not needing newer kernels). I'm realising now how good the 412 pups were, and have written a script to get me past some of the usb detection probs I seemed to be having with them.

Are you sure it's GTK1? The README says it needs 2.0.
