A few weeks ago I had no trouble at all installing 5.0.1 on a 2GB flash drive, and it worked a treat. I've now just downloaded 5.1.0, burnt it to a CD, booted off the CD, and tried installing to the same flash drive, but it refuses to boot, the BIOS saying the drive isn't bootable.

I told it to delete all existing files. I've tried both the universal installer and the bootflash option. When it comes to the MBR I've tried Do Nothing, mbr.bin and mbrfat.bin. Like the tired old Unix programmer I used to be, I've even tried typing sync;sync;sync at the console after the flash install has said it's finished.

So is there a problem with the installer on 5.1.0, or a problem with installing on a drive which previously had 5.0.1, or am I just going crazy?

Regards - Philip

Yes. (It would be disappointing if the installer got that wrong when it was clearly right before.)

Do a new post here. This could be a bug.

I just did a flash drive install using Lupu 510 with both the Universal Installer and Bootflash. Both worked fine.

Look on the flash drive and see if the file ldlinux.sys is there. There was a problem (but I don't remember in which version) that the syslinux bootloader wouldn't work if you were running off the CD. You needed to have done a hard drive install.

This may have been fixed in one of the update PETs.

Thank you - in fact the 5.1 Bug Reports and Fixes gave me the answer - if you're booting from CD it only works after you've created a save file. Fixed in an Instant Update Pet.
