I have tried everything I read here ... or at least I think I did.

I loaded debbi-1.1.pet

I went to the Brother link
http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... #HL-2275DW
& downloaded
LPR driver deb 2.1.0-1 35 KB 2011.Mar.18
cupswrapper driver deb 2.0.4-2 13 KB 2011.Mar.18
I moved them to /root

I ran these two lines in Terminal

Code: Select all

debbi hl2280dwlpr-2.1.0-1.i386.deb

debbi cupswrapperHL2280DW-2.0.4-2.i386.deb
Even after deleting & finding again CUPS shows:
brotherhl-2275dw (Default Printer) "Unable to locate printer 'hostname'!"
Description: Brother HL-2275DW B&W
Location: office
Printer Driver: Brother HL2280DW for CUPS
Printer State: stopped, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: socket://hostname:9100
I found the old Reset Printer code you gave me for a HP Laserjet P1006 but could not figure out how to adapt it - even if that were to be the solution.

(I also loaded peasyscan but Carolina 1.3 doesn't offer CUPS 1.4 so the current version of peasyscan will not work.)

WDYT, please?

Brother HL-2275DW on ASUS RT-16W Router
Your first step should always be to connect the printer directly to the Puppy machine by USB. That will confirm that you have a working driver.

Also, please explain this:
socket://hostname:9100
You should be using an actual IP address here.

When you plug the printer into the router and run CUPS, is it auto-detected? With what connection URI?

Do you have a firewall running on the Puppy machine?

No firewall.

It is not detected - I tried several times as you suggested.

The router shows it as lp0

I believe that we went through this same issue when you connected other printers to your router. You need to use the socket protocol with the router's INTERNAL IP address, like 192.168.2.1.

Here is the note I saved from you re. the HP Laserjet P1006:

Code: Select all

cat /usr/share/foo2xqx/firmware/sihpP1006.dl | nc -w 1 192.168.1.1 9100
Does that help?

Only that your router once had the IP address 192.168.1.1. Have you tried that address with the Brother printer?

I had chosen "ipp" then entered "socket://192.168.1.1:9100" which failed, this time I used only "socket://192.168.1.1" and that worked.

Thanks!

Interestingly when I go to print I see:

Print to File
Brother ...
CUPS-PDF
CUPS-PDF@192.168.1.135

Should I see two PDF addresses?

Your Brother HL-2275DW has both wired and wireless connectivity. Why not just plug it into the router with an Ethernet patch cable?
Print to File

CUPS-PDF@192.168.1.135

Should I see two PDF addresses?
Think about it. What machine on your network has IP address 192.168.1.135? Has its CUPS been set up to share its printers? What printers are installed on it?

Only the Brother shows up on the Router OS menu, nothing else is connected.

Perhaps for some reason the Router assigns a different address for PDF?

In the Devices List for that IP Address the oui selection brings up detail "00-24-2C Hon Hai Precision Ind. Co, Ltd."

The next challenge is to get this wireless-equipped printer to play nicely with the Android app from Brother ...

BTW: 192.168.1.135 is the wlan0 inet address

Whose address? Your Puppy computer?

The computer that I plugged the printer into when you suggested that I test it there - also the one running CUPS.

CUPS-PDF@192.168.1.135
So check your CUPS setup on this machine. Have you enabled printer sharing on it?

I had sharing activated.

I just activated Internet sharing as well & tried again.

I'm thinking it may be a problem in the Brother Android app.

I can' think of anywhere else to look in CUPS or on the ASUS router.

Note: Thought I has posted this earlier - just noticed it in the clutter of open tabs ... sigh.

Just to be clear, you want to turn sharing OFF. The Puppy machine is NOT sharing the printer. The only printer connected to it is the CUPS-PDF virtual printer, which does not require sharing.

Your router is now sharing the Brother printer.

When I turn off Sharing in CUPS I lose access to the printer on the computer in the next room.

Maybe there is a simpler way for the second computer to access the printer on the router.

Regular computers, connected to the router - wirelessly - can access the printer fine now.

What I'm attempting to do is to activate the wireless feature of the printer which allows a SmartPhone or Tablet to print directly without the need to access the Router.

Something appears to be wrong with the Brother app as it's stuck in NFC connect mode - I have notified them.

Thanks.
