What works, and doesn't, for you. Be specific, and please include Puppy version.

amazing fetch dog, CD boots on Dell Latitude CPi

#1 Post by budden »

Salvaged a Dell Latitude CPi off the turn-in heap some months ago. It was somewhere between finicky and not-at-all regarding booting from CD. Loaded an OS by swapping hard drives, but not very satisfying (and wasn't actually using this beast for much). On a whim, popped in a Puppy CD (1.0.7) and lo-behold, it booted. It's actually booted several times, requiring a nudge now and then to start.

What in Puppy would make the boot-from-CD action more robust than other Linuxes and FreeBSD?

I'd guess It'd be the linux 2.4 kernel itself which is often considered to be more compatible with older hardware than linux 2.6. BSD is generally a bit pickier about what drivers get into the kernel. The BSD philosophy is more "ensure all the hardware we support works well" rather than "get as much as possible working even if not 100%" which linux tends towards. It's nice to have the choice :)
