PostPosted: Wed 11 Aug 2010, 23:08    Post_subject:  Samsung N150 Brightness Control with Pupee

Samsung N150 running Pupee 4.3

Two stupid questions_

1- How can I control the display brightness? Eee-control/Backlight/Ultrabright makes really bright, but then how do I turn it down less bright?

2- Assuming I keep pup.431.sfs and pup_save.2fs on hard drive, once Pupee boots from USB thumb drive, can I remove usb drive without crashing system? (it sort of sticks out the side of the computer and I am afraid of accidently breaking it off).

Thanks, Frank

Update on brightness issue:

I downloaded, installed and ran xbacklight-1.1.pet. But it doesn't seem to day anything, brightness stays the same. Either I am doing something wrong (it seems like it should be a straight forward command), or it only works for the Samsung N110, not the N150. Has anyone successfully used xbacklight on the Samsung N150??

I suggest you to change from puppeee to fluppy
Fluppy will be at 99% the same than puppeee but with a full kernel

Puppeee uses a kernel ripped specifically for eeepcs hardware, the kernel is light & fast, but lacks lot of compatibility with other machines

If im not wrong... the brightness controll depends on acpii functions, and probably all acpii functions does not work in other netbooks (all functions related with powermodes, special keys, etc will not work)

-----------------------------------------

About removing the usb thumb... im not sure if this can be done, but maybe is possible in a frugal install using "ramboot" mode
In ramboot all the files are in ram, and when you enter the desktop the usb thumb is not mounted (you dont depend on it to run anything)

sandungas,

Thanks for your thoughts.

I tried fluppy, but same brightness problem; the fn -brightness buttons do not work. Sooo,

I booted pupee again, and clicked Eee-control/backlight/ultrablight. This resulted in a super bright display. I then ran xbacklight -set 20. This brought the brightness down to a good level. (running xbacklight w/o ultrabright results in no brightness change). Not sure why this combination works, but it does.

Regarding removing usb thumbdrive once pupee boots frugal, it can beremoved & doesn't seem to have any adverse impacts. Nice the usb drive doesn't have to hang off the netbook while itiis sitting on my lap.

Thanks again for your input.

There are 2 kinds of function keys, acpi keys, and programmable keys.

If you open Xbindkeys, see if it can detect when you press the function keys. If yes, then you can program them with whatever commands you want.

Otherwise, there may be a kernel module that needs to be compiled for your machine.

Or you might be able to get it to work by adding acpi scripts.

You can check if you have acpi keys by opening the terminal and entering

Code:
killall acpid
acpid -dl

Then press the function keys and see if anything happens in ther terminal.
