Hirens USB booter added...near the bottom of the first post.

Reasonably easy way to boot Hirens from USB.
Seems to make it a Hard drive.

For Netbooks...no cd-dvd...
Hirens just made recovery easier.

/////////////

If someone could provide me with an edited menu to boot
with a Puppy...both Lucid 5.11

and Puppy 4.3.1...I would be grateful.

Update.

I added Zar >> 4 Photo Recovery.

Unfortunately my links >> URLs have played up
and won't show in blue.

Such as Zar.

I will have to think of a workaround.

Post restored.

Now this is weird.

The entire first post was hidden.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=58305

As if had I wiped it altogether.
I have now restored it >> only after ticking >> Disable BBCode

Since early October all the links screwed up and no matter
how I tried they will not work properly in Blue.
Yet as you can see above I can easily put in a link and it works.

This is really starting to pee me off.

I've tried everything including
inserting it into other posts...As a preview...
to see if the links show up...with a Zero result

""""""""""

I sent a PM to RetroTechGuy ... who replied in part

" I have occassionally noted it fails to convert urls when there are
"goofy" returns or something in it (so sometimes deleting the blank
lines and <returns> then restoring then corrects it).

I just tried (without posting) a reply, and the links didn't reactivate.

I tried adjusting the text, and re-"url"ing the first url,
and it didn't reactivate.
I tried copying the whole page, pretending that it is a new post,
and it didn't reactivate in the preview.

And I tried deleting all of the blank lines, and new lines
(then restoring the newlines) and it didn't reactivate...

I wonder if there is a variable related to character set (since "text" is
no longer simply "ASCII"...)

I'll try to dig into this a bit further, and see if I can sleuth out the cause

(I've also noticed that sometimes blue links disappear
on Murga, then reappear a day later -- so there may be
something with the host or server software)

However, I see in the preview of this that all of the blue links
are working. Now why in the world is your post "unique"?...

In a later PM RetroTechGuy said to check that>>
Disable BBCode in this post was not ticked....no that was OK.

He even tried >>
" just tried it again from my work computer (Windows),
copying into Notepad (simple text editor, which usually strips
out non-standard characters) and pasted it back -- no joy. "

::::::::::::

Previously I had asked Flash to try and >> Re-edit the post for me,
with the same result.

So he suggested that I contact Pizzasgood to see if he had an answer.
Which I haven't done as yet.

So Pizzasgood if you are around can you please help?

Or if anyone can repost with my attached windows doc.
I can then point to that page with the working links.

Usually I would just lay all blame to Bugman.

Thanks Flash and RetroTechGuy for assisting me.

Chris.

cthisbear original page with working hyperlinks:

Fix Windows with Puppy Linux and Other Live cd Tools.
Plus programs that help you survive.

This is a starter page for various Windows malware, booting
and data recovery problems.

It includes some of my fixes and or guides from others
including some Puppy Linux and Whirlpool Forum posts.

Though not perfect it is at least a start.
What I wanted was a one page area that I could direct people
with Windows issues to.

Endeavouring to locate past posts and suggestions quickly;
has motivated me to create this Help Page
when Windows users need fixes fast.

It is far better that Newbies can try Puppy Linux -
at the extraordinary price of Zilch.
And still have Windows.
No ranting.
Freedom of choice.

A one time Windows fix is not always available, due to the variety
of viruses out there, the software installed by users,
their Internet habits or even from hardware faults that occur
in the first place.

So any helpful hints are appreciated but leave the Venom to me.
Nobody is forcing you here.
Above all ---this advice may or may not fix your problems.

I wish that someone could make Youtube videos with the clarity
that CatDude has used in his hard drive install posts.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29653

Certainly in regard to cleaning out Windows.

======================================

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK..

Some posts repeat the same Mantra….
Live with it.
Systems change, solutions can vary.

It is just too hard to go through all the posts and write a new Tome.
So this is a start.
It will be edited from time to time.

We have some very knowledgeable people here on the Puppy Forum.
No-one knows the whole box and dice though.
But together we have a Borg Collective thing going.

Other sites have some great fixes too…
I thank all those kind people.
Some go out of their way to give you a fix.
I hope that I don’t step on other peoples toes with advice
in the various items posted here.

If you are happy with some authors consider a small donation,
but only if you can afford it
and if their sites have that as an option.

Certainly Barry Kauler..
our Puppy creator aka Benevolent Dictator has a Donation Button.

http://puppylinux.com/download/index.html

And he often distributes any largesse to others from his palace in Penjori Western Australia.

http://www.puppylinux.com/bkauler/

The Puppy Linux distro is a No Cost to the User Project and is a
labor of love from Barry Kauler.

Great post, great resources, I've used a lot of them myself.

I have a few suggestions, I admin a lot of Win computers and none of them ever get infected unless some kid does it on purpose in order to get to some social-engineered malware "click here to see whats-her-name naked".

Sunbelt personal firewall is a free download, after 30 days some features are disabled, but the ones you need stay working. The best things about it are;

Checks outgoing traffic (do you really want that program phoning home to the mother ship every day?)
Builds its' ruleset (make sure to choose advanced mode when installing) so it nags less and less over time
Easy enough for noobs to learn quickly
Lightweight on the processor (doesn't bog the machine down)
Has the best network connections screen I've seen anywhere, it shows all connections incoming or outgoing, what program, where it's connected to, what ports, which protocol, transfer rate. Wonderful.
Tray icon shows traffic like Blinky does.
Allows the advanced user to manually make and edit the rulesets for both network and program behavior. Priceless.
And best of all, it has behavior checking -- no executable can run unless you've allowed it. This stops anything that gets past layers one and two of your defenses. I wish such a wonderful tool existed for Linux. I've been using it since it was Tiny, then Kerio, now Sunbelt.

Layer one of the defense is to install and use Firefox (or other, but ...). On my users' machines I hide the friggen icons for Internet Explorer, it is the number one vector for picking up a virus. Leave IE installed, because Windows Update needs it there. Just hide the icons. (I leave updates on auto for my users. There are so many vulnerabilities it's worth the risk to me that I might have to talk them through an update-caused repair, it's less likely than me having to do a root canal on their system.) Firefox doesn't run ActiveX, the best feature of all. If a site has an ActiveX control on it, send them a nastygram and don't buy anything from them, and let them know why.

Part two of layer one is to install Thunderbird email client (or other, but...) and hide the friggen icons for Outlook, full version or Express. It's the number two vector, because it autoruns any virus and auto-requests any embedded link to exploited web pages.

Layer two of the defense is to run NoScript add-on in Firefox. This stops 99.9% of stupid crap. Insist that users bite the bullet and learn how to use it when browsing. It builds its own ruleset too, nags less and less over time.

I used to set XP machines up to protect from IE and Outlook idiocy, but it's just so stupid, complicated and inconvenient, this way is better.

AVG is getting wobbly, but it checks emails, incoming and outgoing. My users are all clueless and not in the least interested in learning anything except which button to push to get what they want done. So email checking for free is priceless. Stops them from clicking on incoming virus executables and prevents their machine from being made into a spambot even if they bypass all the protections. It also auto-scans any drive plugged into a USB port.

With those three things on over two dozen machines scattered all over the place, from work to family to friends, I've only had to clean a machine three times in the last five years. It was the same machine, same user. He had to click past at least three warnings each time. Nuff said about him.

One other thing to do with any of those configuration tools mentioned in your post, turn off autorun. Teach the users to launch from windows explorer.

I always configure windows explorer to get rid of the cartoon interface, use double pane mode, show all files, show all file extensions, display in list form, don't remember settings for different folders, etc. I teach the user to look at what they are clicking on in it.

One time last year I installed XP on a machine I accidentally left exposed directly to the internet. Before the install was done, it was hopelessly infected! One of the few times I reformatted and started over.

Thanks again, this is a great post.

There's no other option given to you by the Installation Wizard but to install it. There is a way though to stop the Installation Wizard from popping up and installing Windows Genuine Advantage Notification.

Can be done in Puppy or Hirens boot cd.

But if you are in Windows

Follow the steps below: "

Go to "My Computer."

Click on "Local Disk", usually it's C:\.

Go to folder "Windows."

Go to folder "system32."

Look for the folder KB905474 and click it to see the files inside.

Verify that the folder contains files that have "WGA" or "Genuine Notifications" in the filenames.

Delete the folder KB905474. This stops the Installation Wizard from installing Windows Genuine Advantage Notification.

Empty the Recycle Bin just to make sure Windows doesn't retrieve the deleted folder.

It may be better for those wanting to easily burn a cd to use

I am not very knowledgeable with >> GRUB4DOS.

USB booting will be very handy but the problem is that some

Falcon has special instructions in burning this with Imageburn

"""""""""

" When you go back to burn the CD, there are some important details.

I use ImgBurn to create and burn this ISO, and so can you.

The short of it is, it uses the ISO9660 filesystem with fully relaxed
restrictions, as well as UDF.

The "grldr" file in the root of the disc is also used as the boot image
(itloads 4 sectors, then goes on to find the rest of the file, and boots).

So select >> grldr as your Custom (no emulation) boot image,
4 sectors, and burn away.

You must keep in mind that boot filenames
(e.g. grldr, BOOT\bootmgr,F4UBCD\Images\konboot.gz) are ALL CASE SENSITIVE.

If the case sensitivity is not preserved
(e.g. using a burning app that uppercases the ISO9660 filesystem,or changing
the case on a folder), you'll be in for a world of keyboardmashing.

That's why I recommend using ImgBurn.

IMPORTANT >> as long as you don't accidentally double-click

the "Next" button and zing past the Ask Toolbar opt-out
(hint: use the spacebar to click Next).

Drag over all the items except "SPACER"
(which is used to pad the ISO to put the RAM-disk images near the
fast edge of the disc) to the Build window,

set Options/File System to ISO9660+UDF,

and on the Advanced/ Restrictions/ISO9660 page,
pick Level X, ASCII, and all checkboxes

except >> "Allow Files Exceeding Size Limit".

Under Bootable Disc, check Make Image Bootable,

and select "grldr" as the Boot Image
(you'll need to either type it,
or select All Files in the dropdown in Browse).

Finally, burn away. "

Job done.

What I like about Hotspot Shield is that it is truly easy to use. If you are not tech savvy and are looking for a solution that is easy to deploy and doesn't take money directly from you, then it is the way to go.

If you are a VPN purist or you just don't want to support something that is advertising-driven, you should look at services like Anonymizer or PublicVPN.com. Anonymizer is easy to implement but rather expensive, while PublicVPN.com has more reasonable rates but is harder to get going for the less technically proficient. "

Replacing Outlook Express in Win 7
>> Fixed >> at the end of this post.

I have a friend using Windows 7.

He wanted an Outlook Express replacement.
This was because Microsoft with their usual wisdom removed OE,
and offered Windows Live mail.
Thereby peeing off millions of customers.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... ok-Express

Windows Live Mail is a bit of a pig apparently.
And my mate didn't want Outlook.

So I advised him to try Thunderbird.
There was a small problem though....it wouldn't work.

I was visiting him recently and so I tried running it.

I had read somewhere recently ( maybe Whirlpool ),
about issues with Thunderbird and Win7.

Putting it kindly >> the developers look like they stuffed it up.

It's not that I'm not used to setting it up.

But the installer now is just stupid.
Where Plain Jane succeeded before, it now won't let you choose Pop3 etc.
There are workarounds but what a mess.

I could not get it going.

So I downloaded the Portable Apps version.
I finally got Thunderbird working but it then refused to send out mail.

My advice...go back to the 2 series.
I personally advocate Portable Thunderbird 2.
It just worked...a no brainer.

If you need to re-install Win7 or Vista:
you already have it there on the disk.

Copy the lot as a backup.
Just make a shortcut on your desktop and you are back in business.

Download:

Portable Thunderbird 2.0.0.6

http://www.softwaregeek.com/mirror.php? ... 97&index=1

There will be the usual whinges about security.
Bugger that...this just works.
I imported his old mail and contacts without a hitch.

::::::::::::

What do I use?
Well I've never used Outlook Express.

I've always used the old Netscape Navigator, and then Mozilla
and then Seamonkey.
They just worked.

I haven't upgraded past >> SeaMonkey 1.1.19.
But the newer series should not be a problem.
I never let any version update.

And I've used Portable Thunderbird...up to the 2 series.
Now I use version 2.0.0.22

So I've had a look around and here are some posts.
Good luck.

My mate now uses the >> Vista >> Windows mail >> for his Win7

Download the zip and extract all files to a folder,

call it >> Windows Mail

Boot Puppy, Hirens, the Falcon whatever,

Go to >> Program Files >> in Windows 7

rename the folder >> Windows Mail to

Windows Mail Win7

Copy the extracted folder >> Windows Mail >> to

Program Files.

Make a shortcut from the file >> WinMail.exe >>

Copy the shortcut to your desktop >> voila!

when you click on it you have a completely usable

The download is here >> Vista mail 4 Win7

Network Magic

Old version…still good. Good 4 Vista.
Still let’s you use the simple features after 7 days.

http://www.datafilehost.com/download-d257a07e.html

I reuploaded this...for XP and Vista users.

On Win7...the only thing they got right is connecting to hidden networks.
So you don't need it it.
However Windows7 is still a pig with more perfume.

Crapware.

Lately I have been trying to multi boot different Puppies and other
great tools like Hirens and the Falcon Boot cd from a USB.

Grub 4 Dos in the latest Puppies is very handy.
Less chance of formatting your USB.
However the Golden Rule is back up anyway.
Any advice is only welcome if it actually works.

/////////

Thanks Shinobar.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=51697

" Grub4DosConfig is the Gru4Dos boot loader with GUI installer.
The name 'Grub4Dos' can be confusing but it is actually
'Grub NOT ONLY for Dos'.

Grub4dos supports many file system:
NTFS, VFAT, EXT2, EXT3, EXT4.
Does not support ReiserFS.
Grub4dos is upper compatible with (legacy) grub, can do all the legacy grub can do.

Remarkable is NTFS support.
Easy to install on Windows pre-installed PC's because linux partitions
are not essential,
Boots up Puppy(frugal and full) and other Linux and Windows.
It is used in Puppy 4.3.1 Japanese edition,
Toutou Linux, Quirky, Wary and in recent woof.
works on puppy 4.x/5.x and its derivatives. "

////////////////

But how do you edit the menu list in Windows.
Not easily done in with MS .

Of course I can do it in Puppy without problems.

Hirens also uses >> Metapad. ...Which works fine.

" Metapad >> is a small, fast and completely free text editor for
Windows (95/98/NT/XP/Vista/7) with similar features to
Microsoft Notepad but with many extra (and rather useful) features.
It was designed to completely replace Notepad since it includes all
of Notepad's features and much, much more. "

http://www.welcome.to/metapad/

Metapad does not need installing...just unzip and make a shortcut.

///////

Finally puppyluvr has released his Multiboot cd creator.

MultiPup CD/DVD Creator

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63572

" Only for ext2/ext3 filesystems... "

But if you had an old drive lying around you could format in Puppy
and use it to test multi booting..

Remember that formatting drives is quick.
Recovering your data if you erased the wrong drive is painful.

Rewritable cds or dvds are handy to have for testing.

""""""

FalconFour's Ultimate Boot CD/USB 4.0 - Hiren's 10.6

http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/5930413/ ... ren_s_10.6

Harder to burn. From the Falcon How To.

"And finally, when you go back to burn the CD, there are some important details. I use ImgBurn to create and burn this ISO, and so can you.

The short of it is, it uses the ISO9660 filesystem with fully relaxed restrictions, as well as UDF.

The "grldr" file in the root of the disc is also used as the boot image
(it loads 4 sectors, then goes on to find the rest of the file, and boots).
So select grldr as your Custom (no emulation) boot image,
4 sectors, and burn away.

You must keep in mind that boot filenames (e.g. grldr, BOOT\bootmgr,
F4UBCD\Images\konboot.gz) are ALL CASE SENSITIVE.

If the case sensitivity is not preserved (e.g. using a burning app that uppercases the ISO9660 filesystem, or changing the case on a folder), you'll be in for a world of keyboardmashing.

That's why I recommend using ImgBurn, even though the author got a little irresponsible with selling-out to Ask.com and promoting Uniblue malware. "

/////////

So just use this Imageburn...no install.. don't update.
