I have a ComputerLabs thinclient that is no longer supported. It has 256mb ram and a 512mb IDE flash with a corrupt XP embedded install.
I am looking for a way to replace the XPe with linux that is uncompressed so it uses no RAM disk.
The objective is loading speed for an RDP client. The usual swap partition is twice the RAM but that is all the HD space in the system. It also only boots from usb or the IDE. The power supply cannot support a normal drive and there are no other interface connections on the board. Can a frugal install of puppy or any other distro be installed in this way? It does run slax from the IDE, but boots slow uncompressing to ramdisk.

I have used Puppy with 256MB of RAM with no problem whatsoever - in fact its exactly as fast and responsive with 256MB of RAM as it is with the 1.2GB I have now.
Puppy runs just fine from IDE or USB - I use both extensively, and have used the USB method to install Puppy without any issues. I also do not use swap space at all and have yet to encounter any problems related to that. It is probably a good idea to use some swap space on your system, but the 2/1 ratio is simply a recommendation, not a necessity.

You can use the initrd.gz and vmlinuz for a frugal install in the internal CF.
Considering its small power usage, putting it off and on all the time (thus requiring booting) shall not be an issue.

There are a lot of Puppi distros working fine as thinclient s.w. You can use an old distro like 1.03, 1.09, 2.16, 4.12 barebone for example. On a Celeron 333, 32mb ram with Puppi 1.03 or 1.09 even with 2.16 I have fine rdesktop and xdmcp sessions. I have no P1 for trying but with an old Puppi distro you could save even a 14 year old scrap. Puppi recognizes more h.w. than DSL and is easier to use and install than any other distro. You can install Puppi on hdd, normal, frugal, with Windows on the same partition if you want, without even changing mbr (use Wingrub) starting from config.sys or boot.ini, you can use Puppi from pendrive or from live cd. Puppi is light and easy. You can start from live cd and have a swap partition or swapfile and savefile on your pendrive or direct start from pendrive and have this all too.
