on some puppy version that detects your driver
if you run this code I could see the eth0 driver you need

Code: Select all

grep "eth0:" /tmp/bootkernel.log
press enter

after seeing your log

Code: Select all

grep "ath5k" /tmp/bootkernel.log

==========================================================
I compiled this one I know Mick used it on the EeePC 701 so I compiled it for TXZ_pup
rtl8185-k2.6.27.7
http://www.puppy2.org/slaxer/rtl8185-k2 ... 3_SLXR.txz

needs testers

Hi Joe

Mine is the 701SD.. different wireless chipset to aarf's.

I believe Madwifi might be the go for aarf on your kernel. Wouldn't there be an old .tgz among the Slackware repos for that?

Did you use that before the later kernels aarf? Say in standard 4.1.2?

Cheers

my connection is by wifi
this is from puppeeerc7
there is a press <enter> after each line. same as in txz450 nothing happens.

Code: Select all

# grep "eth0:" /tmp/bootkernel.log
# grep "eth0:" /tmp/bootkernel.log
# grep "wlan0:" /tmp/bootkernel.log
#
this is an extract from
/tmp/bootkernel.log in puppeeerc7.

Code: Select all

very certain that ath5k is the wifi driver eeepc701 uses.

yes something did change not sure when but it was never called madwifi in the modules list even though the pet was named madwifi.

i think it was this page that i had to download drivers from http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34159

there was also issues with getting them to actually install

possibly the madwifi pet in this post:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 740#237740
i havent ever paid much attention to kernel numbers.

@musher0
Wouldn't that be because you've unhooked the HD where your Windoze is
nope i only have 1 drive for my Puppy test machine! as i said i really dont know why all of the sudden it went booting :D

i also tested some more packages
LAMP-6.11-5.1.31-5.2.8.pet - wont run
SFS_Installer-1.0-430.pet - wont run
editSFS 2.1 - wont run

OpenOffice301_JRE_lzma_413.sfs - GREAT & runs smoothly :D

@ big_bass

really needed hiawatha for testing all the files already given just don't work

1. I dont use grub I use lilo to boot (I have slackware installed) so in order to set up grub I have to manually install my other hard drive ( I shouldnt have to, this should work for you)
i reinstalled txz450 four (4) times just to be sure heres the verdict:

1st install - did not install grub & wont boot
2nd install - did install & boot sweet
3rd install - did not install GRUB on setup/config interface after booting again the CD i reinstalled "GRUB ONLY" and went on booting without a hitch!
4th install - after puppy installer & GRUB, i restarted the CD installer and configure GRUB and boots!

1 test machine & HD only for the experiment :?:

can anyone point me how to install sfs in TXZ450 and txz for hiawatha?

decompressing (unsquashing it ) a sfs is not difficult you just need a lot of free space

make sure you have a lot of free space before doing this on a large sfs

Code: Select all

unsquashfs something.sfs
I´ll upload the squashfs 4 tools *
TXZ pup used squashfs3.4
http://www.puppy2.org/slaxer/squashfs-t ... 3_SLXR.txz

special use only ok you wont need this much
then those squashfs4 sfs files would use

Code: Select all

unsquashfs4 something.sfs

in your root directory you will see a folder called squashfs-root
inside that contains the sfs you decompressed

then you make a package

learning something new can be fun if you can't be bothered by that now
if you list some SFS packages known to work I could convert them to TXZ packages

because by design SFS file have a limit of how many you could mount that is by design a limited system to base the build on

*they have their use but its very limited

:!: I really tried to avoid petget registering packages
one of the reasons I packaged over 400 TXZ packages :D

there is a lot of really technical stuff going on when you install a package

1.)one long answer for petget

2.)one long answer for slackwares package tools

since I wrote the package tools front end believe me when I say its a long answer

but I will make this very brief

slackwares package tools has quite a few advantages
not in the pretty GUI stuff but in its backend its a work horse

one example of installing a SFS by converting it to a pet then
using pet get is it will wipe out files when you delete it (maybe leaving you broken )

slackwares package tools checks every installed package before removing a program
so if there was an overlap and another package needed a lib it in "theory"
would not remove that file (not perfect but a step in the right direction)

also if you notice every dependency could be checked on all packages that
are installed using package tools for the "so called core packages on puppy" but in slackware everything is removable even the important system files can be removed
a lot of power there so care is needed but with that power you get great flexibility
to modify everything

packages can be compared easily which each new version
every package should registered with package tools
to gain those and many more features

I will upload some tools to covert and make packages
keeping it easy of course

*(package making is and always be a technical job
since you have to consider many technical things first
kernels versions ,libs, glibc , file locations , squashfs versions, config files, window managers etc.... )

I should have trusted my gut feelings. I postponed testing some 12 hours due to me felt unsure of if it would work at all.

This version felt like the kinds of OS that ignore Simple Network Setup and insist on the Load Module driver method. My body knew this without even having downloaded it. Mystery!

Load modules method only works if one know exactly what driver to load. Newbies seldom know such and don't know to get that info either

I have no idea. And I tested some 7 different on my Acer D250, 3 intel ethernet wired and broadcom and atheros none of them get connec tion.

No network ever for wired LAN and Wifi totally failed too. I am on Acer.

Neither Quirky nor Puppeee had any problem to automatically find the conne tion to internet.

Why does TXZ not care about us users. :)
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

right now i would like to unload you of that work :D so you can concentrate with polishing TXZ450, what I'm doing now is testing per package that we need, if its running or not under your pup! i shall be listing more packages that's PNP under TXZ450 pup
I really tried to avoid petget registering packages
one of the reasons I packaged over 400 TXZ packages
much appreciated! but as a newbie (as i think i am) it would we wise to atleast indicate even a single liner what that TXZ is for. so we, the newbie out there will not go crazy installing and testing every single TXZ file from your server :)

@nooby

and that's where we, the newbie can be handy!

you need to create some files
the ones that are missing
saying no such file or directory

no basic defaults are set to get a display

one example

/etc/videomode
0x0118 1024x768x24

I have never remasted anything
but looking at that output
generate the missing files by coping them over from your working version

by using packages it will do away with remastering
there's a few how to's I will have to write
