thanks for posting here's the fix

strange thing with the floppy I´ll have to investigate

htmlfix
http://www.puppy2.org/slaxer/htmlfix-1. ... 3_SLXR.txz

that cleans the dead links and defaults to firefox for html and gives you firefox and seamonkey in the rox menu

if you didnt install sea monkey here it is
seamonkey 2.05

TXZ vs slaxer

#82 Post by plankenstein »

A couple of quick questions, if you don't mind. First; how do TXZ and slaxer differ, and their similarities. Second; I've tried both on this box and neither one will run xorg, where other pups will. It's an HP with an AMD 64 processor, running an ATI video card I believe. Vesa runs fine, but I've never had to us it with any other pups. :?:
I carefully plan ALL my random acts!

TXZ_pup 4.5 ~~~~~~~~~ the future is bright

#83 Post by efiguy »

Hi,
Very Impressive, even without the stunning Background.

Like the menu selections, will have to assemble a desktop chassis for further experimentation, as laptop has "not unexpected" issues (It took days to get all the XP drivers;)
Win users liked shell operation.

I like it,

Jay

PS
On boot, observed video modes clearly well above the "normal" 1024x768 - didn't know it could display those settings ?

Nvidia GE Force Go 6100 required Vesa Force
Nvidia Ethernet (win drv 1.00.04.05027) is usually picked up by Puppy 4xx series
RTL wifi RTL8185 (win drv 5.1114.917.2009) needs driver
Sound OK

Hey Jay (efiguy)

thanks for the report
there are quite a few nvidia drivers I had to compile
on the first page of this thread if a special command
is needed to run your video please post the code

the ath5k is one of those third party drivers

we all have fun compiling those and adding them in later :D

I 'll compile in what ever else it needs
it a process with all the possible hardware in the world and keep it around 100MB

if you have Nvidia Ethernet select force death in the module list

Code: Select all

grep "ath5k" /tmp/bootkernel.log

ATH5K
http://www.puppy2.org/slaxer/madwifi-r3 ... 3_SLXR.txz

==========================================================
I compiled this one also use the ath5k first if that worked use it
rtl8185-k2.6.27.7

updated cups to have a service start script 7-22-2010
notice the package is cups-1.3.9-i486-4 the fist one had a "3"

this is something I did a long time ago but it was jut a stand alone script
now I packaged it with cups

so in Menu>System>Cups Manage Printing
a small GUI pops up and asks you to enable the port to start the cups service
*you can also disable it if you dont want the port to stay open when cups is not in use
also why run a service in the background if you are not using it
this keeps things more transparent to the usr to see what is taking place

page 3 of this tread

Thanks to tasmond 8)

just repackaged for TXZ_pup *the pet wont work needs a special fix for TXZ_pup or slaxer pup
http://www.puppy2.org/slaxer/firewallst ... 3_SLXR.txz

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57725
It places an icon in the tray which indicates the status of the firewall on/off with a menu with utils.

It has a left click run the firewall wizard directly.

There is a right click menu with option to run wizard and also to remove the icon from tray once firewall is running.

The reason for this tray app was for new iso installs really. It would act as a reminder when first starting the install that the firewall was off. Once the wizard had been run it could be removed.

TXZ_pup 4.5 ~~ a fork build

#87 Post by efiguy »

Hi Joe (big_bass),

TXZ4.5 booted easily on this Dell desktop.

Thanks for the links - picked them up but not loaded as yet

Watched some YouTube via 640x480 scanconverter

Had to do the global font reduction as expected for menus

Looking forward to next tweak

Thank You,
Jay

Hi big-bass, i have a frugal install of your latest offering and i am very impressed so far.
Wifi module was not detected on this toshiba laptop but a manual load of the Orinoco cs driver brought it to life.
I have installed the extra files you posted but i am still getting an error displayed in the error log,
freememapplet: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by freememapplet)
geany: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by geany)
/usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/firefox/libxul.so)
/usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/firefox/libxul.so)

/usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/firefox/libmozjs.so)
Hope this helps you if others have the same problem.

Hi Joe, i have now tracked the problem down to your 412-devx-1486-3_SLXR.txz, maybe you can have a look.

I will updated the devx there are quite a few programs I will compile so I can add the new headers *pending*

geany and freememapplet I fixed had to recompile them
on TXZ_pup I reverted to an older freememapplet since that one was nicer
and cleaned up the C source to use pprocess

heres the fixes

I downloaded TXZ and checked the md5sum.

I opened the iso in Spup 040 and copied the usual three Frugal files to a newly created /home/txz/ folder.

I added this entry to GRUB:
# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Puppy Linux TXZ 4.50 Frugal (on /dev/sda2)
root (hd0,1)
kernel (hd0,1)/txz/vmlinuz pfix=fsck PMEDIA=idehd PDEV1=sda2 pupsubdir=txz acpi=noirq nosmp vga=normal video=640x480
initrd (hd0,1)/txz/initrd.gz
# Linux bootable partition config ends
I rebooted and selected TXZ.

A bunch of code scrolled by then I got a message saying it could not locate txz_450.sfs

What did I do incorrectly, please?

Here's my grub entry for TXZ-450...............I named my psubdir Puppy 450 but that's just a personal preference.

title Puppy Linux Slaxer 450 frugal in sda12
rootnoverify (hd0,11)
kernel /puppy450/vmlinuz pfix=fsck pdev=sda12 pmedia=atahd psubdir=puppy450 nosmp acpi=force

I discovered that txz_450 is the same as Wary -- change the "sda2" (in my case) to "hda2" and leave everything else the same as I had it and it works.

It does not detect my internal Wifi nic.

I absentmindedly tried to force the ath9k module but what I need the ath5k module.

Other observations:

1. The boot is really verbose.

2. During mouse setup there is a problem with overlapping displays of the white text and the colorful menu for mouse selection.

One has to ignore the mess and arrow up or down and a second partial window of the mouse selection pops up and after you have chosen the one you want his Enter and all else proceeds as normal.

3. The process to add apps seems unclear - it appears that the old Puppy method is still in there while I thought TXZ had a different method?

1.) download TXZ package the ones on the first page of this thread are best to use )
2.)click on it a box opens and asks you if you want to install it (say yes)
3.) if you have many down loaded packages there is a bulk installer slaxer_pkg_tools2.2

that is the package management its used to install ,uninstall, view installed files ,check dependencies for TXZ packages

*if you have a lone pet package you havent converted to the TXZ format install that using petget and remove it with pet get check the dependencies with petget note I use the pre woof package format for pets (since I convert packages that do work on TXZ_pup to the txz format )
================how to ===================================

just click on a TXZ package it asks if you want to install it (thats easy)

just right click on a TXZ package and in rox an option for unzipper drag N drop 5
comes up what that does is auto name and decompress the package in a folder for you so you can see whats inside it before installing " if you wanted to check "

lets say you wanted to install any known /tested working packages you could place them in root
then click on slaxer_pkg_tools2.2 the GUI comes up just check the boxes multiple installs are ok no limit to how many

or if you like to be clean and have all the packages in a special folder just copy slaxer_pkg_tools2.2 into that folder it will put all those packages and only them in the GUI nice hugh thats why slaxer_pkg_tools2.2 is just a script its portable its a front end tool
you can place it anywhere (thats easy )

same thing goes for uninstalling you can do multiple uninstalls from the GUI
just check the boxes (thats easy )

coming from an real slackware based distro package management is a standard I havent changed
my package tools just makes it easier and adds dependency checking and
keeps things in the X environment with Xdialog making it more modern

after using TXZ_pup you could use any other slackware based distro
I maintained the same package standard with slaxer_pkg_tools2.2

in fact slaxer_pkg_tools2.2 runs on slackware 13.1 as a stand alone app now thats keeping things a standard having it work on two operating systems
without any edits needed thats real open source when it works on other operating systems not code something that only works on puppy and no other distro

1. The boot is really verbose.
yeah I like to see what going on with my computer keeping things more transparent
also debugging stuff in the boot up with a black screen isnt helpful
2. During mouse setup there is a problem with overlapping displays of the white text and the colorful menu for mouse selection.
well that only happens if you have some messages getting written after the "blue screen had been drawn" in your case most likley a message that your internet connection wasnt up or an X error echoing some message

I would like to fix that to catch those errors and re direct them elsewhere :?

When I go to localhost:631 and select Find Printer Drivers it generates the first page of many with this summary heading:
1207 printer drivers found, showing 1 to 20:
This is, of course, absurd.

How do I purge this file and create a clean one with only the drivers I actually need?

on the first page I just updated it with the compiled special driver under the heading
extra HP drivers

to make it easier you need

I just compiled this special HP driver foo2zjs and packaged it
http://www.puppy2.org/slaxer/foo2zjs-1-i486-3_SLXR.txz

here is a screen shot its not yours but it is useful as a reference

just noticed the "P" before the printer number thats included in the package I compiled

I haven't tried TXZ_pup yet, it sounds just the sort of Puppy I've been longing for- one where one can un-install the packages it comes with, and install others from a large repo. However, I'm confused.
It seems to be based on Slackware 12 rather than 13?
Does the installer handle packages directly from the Slackware repo, or do you (Joe) process them to make them suitable and put them into a smaller repo?
I'm definitely one of the users you envisage- I'd like to try Slackware, but couldn't work out how to throw 6 to start. And I don't like KDE.
I'll let you know how it goes on my ten-year-old 600MHz 256MB machine.

He raises an interesting point, how does TXZ differ from Spup 040?

Barry is looking for a person, or a team, to pick up Spup development.

Perhaps you might merge your project with Spup?

In my experience Spup is the best-of-breed among 4.31, Lucid/Lupu, Quirky, Spup, and Wary.

I did just install Fatdog64-500 on our ACER laptop because it supports 64bit and dual processors and the ACER has plenty of resources.

I didn't notice if TXZ supports 64-bit or dual-processors.

Also, do you have a ath5k Wifi module? A lot of the "N" Wifi nic require that.
