In my eyes, Wary and 2.6.27.47 seem to be the best choice for a mainstream Puppy. Some people don't like the big size and compatibility of Lupu, so this may be the Puppy to replace 4.3.1 for many of us.
2.6.27.47 is the current kernel in the long-term support branch, so if we get it to work correctly ... it may be the best Puppy kernel ever. Barry already backported Squashfs 4 from 2.6.29 to it and added Aufs2, plus a patch that renames ext4dev to ext4, so it's usable.
I made my own patch that backports Squashfs 4 from the stable kernel (2.6.33.5) to 2.6.27.47 and it works perfectly.
The issue with 2.6.27.47 that really interests me is the possibility to backport ext4 from a later kernel to it. Basically, it should be a really tough case, because ext4 has undergone many changes since .27. I tried to port both ext4 from 2.6.33.5 and 2.6.32.15 with no success. I think ext4 relies on other parts of the kernel that need to be "upgraded" too.
It doesn't REALLY matter, because ext3 is very stable, but if one uses more than one distro or puplet, that could be problematic. I think Barry will eventually give up on ext4 in this retro kernel, but I still think it could be a great addition. And I truly believe it's possible, somehow.
So ... does anyone know how to do this correctly?

Backporting ext4 is not something we can do (I don't think so anyway), it is very complicated. I posted some feedback from ext4 developers here:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01656
There are still more ext4 patches coming in for 2.6.27.48, so it's an on-going thing.
Despite the warnings from the developers, I wonder, it might be quite usable.
Anyway, I hope to release an alpha of Wary with this kernel very soon, and it will be very interesting to see how it works on old and new PCs, and on ext4 filesystems.

Agreed - there is still no clear upgrade path from 4.3.1 for users.Iguleder wrote:In my eyes .. this may be the Puppy to replace 4.3.1 for many of us.
We can keep broadcasting Lupu or Quirky, but at the end of the day, the question remains: where is the next Puppy?
