2nd try - report

#61 Post by peebee »

Hi Richard

I've downloaded and installed onto a pristine pup431 the latest versions that I could find of:

Code: Select all

- pup_event_backend_modprobe_fix_to_p43x-5.6.pet
- modem_fix_pack_to_431-6.pet
- modem_fix_pack_delta-6_to_8.pet
- modem_fix_pack_8-patch-3.pet
- agrsm-11c11040-2.1.80~20091225-k2.6.30.5.pet
I rebooted and am sorry to report that there was no sign of agrmodem being loaded. No clues in dmesg or /var/log/messages why not either.

wary060 k2.6.32.16 had version 2.1.80 of agrsm

wary070 and wary090 k2.6.30.5 seem to have reverted to 2.1.60 as originally in pup431 - this can be manually loaded but crashes as soon as it is used - e.g. with modem-stats.

Any other diagnostic info I can send you??

Thanks
Peter

Has anyone compiled the later agrsm kernel module in Puppy 4.3.1? If so, could you provide a link to it and I will put it into the linux-2.6.30.5 PET package.
Note, it has to be compiled in Puppy 4.3.1, not in Wary.

If anyone is interested, I am positioning Wary as the replacement for Puppy 4.3.1, well for the entire 4.x series.

Wary 0.9 already has all of rerwin's PETs, so is ready to test. What I have not applied is his latest patch-3 for agere modems:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 0&start=45

Note that I was not able to compile the agrsm driver with the 2.6.35.7 kernel. Rerwin sent me links to a couple of other agrsm drivers, that cover some of the agere chips, and I was able to compile those but did not put them into Wary.

If you want to know what modem drivers I managed to compile with the 2.6.35.7 kernel (and are in Wary), see here:

http://bkhome.org/sources/kernel-2.6.35.7/

us#er#na#me: pu#pp#y pa#ss#wo#rd: li#nu#x

...click on the "kernel-compile-2.6.35.7.txt" file.

Wary 0.9 has also been built with the 2.6.30.5 kernel.

See Wary 0.9 announcement here:

Hi Barry
My understanding is that Richard has done this here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=33171

these modules certainly work if hand loaded onto pup431 - getting them to be automagically detected and loaded is still under testing.....they don't work if hand loaded onto wary - they give depmod errors.

They were in wary060 k2.6.32.16 - where did they come from then??

Cheers

Agere modem testers with Wary09 (peebee),
I have posted a consolidated package in the wary09 bugs thread, to simplify upgrading the Agere support: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 382#457382

Install that package, then the "agrsm" packages from the earlier posting in this thread. That sequence should avoid the warnings peebee described. Let me know if they still appear. Thanks.

peebee,
Thanks. Since they are warnings, I think they can be ignored. I suspect they are related to the difference in versions of ALSA. Does the modem still work?

I am changing my scheme for implementing the Agere stuff because it does not work in wary. I think I can make minor changes to fix that. In the meantime, I think the wary package should still work as long as you install only one of the variants of agrsm.

no modules - no modem

#68 Post by peebee »

Hi Richard

The warnings seem to stop the modules being loaded - so no - the modem does not work in wary 090 k2.6.30.5

I could try the --force parameter to modprobe? although this hasn't worked in the past.

Has alsa version changed between pup431 and wary090 even though they are both k2.6.30.5? Should I try reverting to the pup431 alsa? Is this even possible?

I'm still a bit bemused as to why wary060 k2.6.32.15 worked so well whereas subsequent wary's have problems....any ideas why?

Would be great to help you to get this to work.
Thanks
Peter

Barry in his blog wrote:PupDial first finds /dev/ttyUSB1, I try Connect, get "No carrier...", then I click button to choose /dev/ttyUSB3, and that then connects ok.

But the problem is, at next boot I find that sometimes it will connect with /dev/ttyUSB3, sometimes it simply says cannot find the interface.

Pressing Choose or any button does not get me back to /dev/ttyUSB1, and I have to exit PupDial then edit wvdial.conf and change it back to /dev/ttyUSB1, then start PupDial and go through the same procedure of trying to connect then changing to /dev/ttyUSB3.

It seems that this modem requires an initial operation of some kind on /dev/ttyUSB1, then it works on /dev/ttyUSB3.
I am pleased that the initial use of the "ttyUSB1" button worked as intended, switching the selection to ttyUSB3. At that point, the button should be labeled as "ttyUSB1". Pressing that should test ttyUSB1. If that fails, then selection should remain ttyUSB3 and the label should change back to ttyUSB3. But if it is successful, the selection should change to ttyUSB1.

So, it will not let you get back to ttyUSB1 if that port is unsuccessful. I need to look into that, if that is what you are experiencing.

That behavior should occur even across reboots, but maybe there is a "hole" in there somewhere. (The alternative port is retained as a "#modem = ttyUSB1" statement in wvdial.conf.)

Re: Extension of Agere HDA & PCI modem support

#70 Post by peebee »

rerwin wrote:Agere HDA and PCI modem users,

As I do not have a modem to test with, I hope some users will try this out and report results here. Thank you for any feedback on this.

UPDATE 10/15/2010: Re-uploaded all of the packages. Now they should all work reliably. Note, however, that:
- They require the use of depmod_FULL and that the packages DO NOT run that upon installation.
- The modem fix pack 8 patch 4 should be installed before any of the agrsm packages.
- At least the agrsm-11c11040-2.1.80~20091225-k2.6.30.5 package should be installed, because it is the default (most likely needed) variant and is needed for the selection method to work.
- The agrsm048pci-2.1.60_20100108-k2.6.30.5 package appears to be the same as the original puppy version, so may not be necessary to be installed.
- After all the packages are installed, then run depmod-FULL from a console.
- To be sure the new code takes effect, run pupdial and CHOOSE > ERASE, even if no modem is already detected.

I am posting a special version of the patch in the wary09 thread, so use that with wary, instead of patch-4 here.
Richard
Hi Richard

Your concerted efforts to get this working are greatly appreciated.
This my report for my HP550 laptop with the 11c11040 Agere HDA modem.

Started Pup431 with a pristine pupsave file.
Loaded 5 PETS - see the attachment (have I got this right??)
Did depmod-FULL
opened pupdial and issued ERASE
rebooted

Result as before I'm afraid - the modem was not detected, the modules were not loaded.

I now have triple copies of both agrmodem and agrserial in the bootmanager module list - see attachment 2.

As before - I force loaded agrmodem and agrserial, rebooted and the modules were successfully loaded and the modem was then working.

Sorry I'm not able to report any further success - anything I can do to provide you with further diagnostics.

Cheers
Peter

peebee,
Thanks for your report. The packages you installed are correct. But there should be no add-list entries for the agr modules. I assume you added them later, but how did three entries each get in there. The additional entries are ignored. And they should not get generated automatically, in case you did not put them there yourself.

Please try again and get me a pmodemdiag file. You can use your current setup, but remove the agr entries in the BootManager, re-run pupdial-CHOOSE>ERASE, and re-run depmod-FULL. Then reboot, click the connect icon. At that point, if no modem detected, do the following in a console:
- Run this command:

Code: Select all

grep -H '' /etc/modprobe.d/* >> /tmp/udevtrace-modem.log
(Those are two single quotes after the "-H".)
- run pmodemdiag.

I verified that there is a rule that should see your HDA sound "card". The rule should make the agrsm firmware load, It should not change anything from the preset default selection of the 11c11040 variant. That module should get loaded and appear in the output of the lsmod command. There should be no warnings in /var/log/messages, since there should be no ALSA-version issue. If the module does not load, then there is some other factor I have not considered. I hope the diag file will help me sort that out.

Thanks for your continuing efforts to help with this.

pmodemdiag info for agere hda modem pup431

Hi Richard
The pmodemdiag output after the above steps is attached - hope it provides the necessary clues....

I've also confirmed that pup431 OOTB has a single entry in the bootmanager add list for agrmodem & agrserial - the additional 2 entries appear after the pets have been installed.....

peebee,
Thanks for the diag file. Yes, it provides a clue. The agr modules don't load because of a constraint in pup_event_backend_modprobe that prevents loading of a module if the device is already associated with another module, in this case snd_hda_intel. It makes an exception for usb-storage for the hybrid USB modems. I think an exception is needed for snd_hda_intel, as well.

With your current setup, please run (copy and paste) the following edit command in a console, to add the exception:

(Code removed to protect the updated version of the pup_event_backend_modprobe script. To get that fix, download and install the pup_event_backend_modprobe fix 5.7 from the first message in this thread.)

Then reboot and see what happens.
Richard

Hi Richard

At last I'm able to report SUCCESS!
After I'd worked out how to paste into the console......
Applied the edit
Rebooted
agrmodem and agrserial were automagically loaded
The modem works!!
All entries in the bootmanager add-list have gone

Great stuff.

Now I want to test wary090 for you although I see that Barry is having some kernel problems......so we may have to wait for that to resolve?

MANY THANKS

Thank you, peebee, for verifying that final fix for the Ageres. The change is now in the new pup_event_backend_modprobe...5.7 package, and in the woof patch.

Hi there. I have an Agrere Systems PCI-SV92PP Soft Modem on COM3 and Puppy 4.3.1 iso on CD. I would like to try out this fix but I am extremely rusty at Unix (Comp. Sci. major 20 years ago). Could somebody give me the exact steps and commands needed? Sorry to be a pain. I promise to come back and tell you how it went.

So I poked around a little more, and found 3 links at Driverguide.com that discussed linux drivers for the SV92PP.

The 1st one claims to be a driver -- the download page claims:

I think that the 8.4MB zip file is too big to post here, but if someone can tell which of these subsets is most appropriate (e.g. closest match to Puppy), I would be happy to extract that one and post it here. My first thought is the RPM, but hopefully someone else can tell better.

(also, if the 8.4 MB can be posted, I'ld be happy to push it up).

Sci. major 20 years ago). Could somebody give me the exact steps and commands needed? Sorry to be a pain. I promise to come back and tell you how it went.
Suggest you try on a pristine pup431 savefile....

for Agere SV92PP(11c10620 AGRSM)

download and install:

modem_fix_pack_to_431-6.pet from: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... h&id=27882

from page 1 of this topic:
pup_event_backend_modprobe_fix_to_p43x-5.7.pet
modem_fix_pack_delta-6_to_8.pet

from page 4 of this topic:
modem_fix_pack_8-patch-4.pet
agrsm-11c11040-2.1.80~20091225-k2.6.30.5.pet
agrsm06pci-2.1.80~20100106-k2.6.30.5.pet

I think that is correct - rerwin is the author and real expert and will no doubt confirm or contradict.

Cheers
Peter

peebee,
You are "right on". That is exactly what I would have advised, but you said it better. Thank you for handling the request.
