Hello Everybody,

After removing Pwidgets on my Lucid Puppy, the Nathan Wallpaper setter is gone. I can't click it in the menu, or run it via JWM -> Desktop -> Wallpaper.

So is there an easy way to restore it? There is now also that 'fade black' on the right side which is also really annoying.

I hope anyone has a solution.

Greetz,
Pascal

You can reinstall the original Wallpaper setter

ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/pet_packages-4/wallpaper-0.5.3.pet

Nope, it's not that easy. I tried it (but then with the 0.5.5 version), and the icon in the menu is actually back but when I click it, it won't start.

Oh thanks man! When I typed it into the terminal, it said something like missing English things. That reminded me, that I used the 'Trim the fat' option for the first time, didn't know what it's goal was, and just tried something.
So after reinstalling it Without using the 'Trim the fat' option. It worked.

Stupid mistake...

Btw, Wallpaper setter went directly through the directory /root/.pwidgets, which is also left after uninstalling pwidgets. So I can delete that too.

Thanks man, and maybe this will help other which are as stupid like me too Rolling Eyes

Hello Zigbert,
I am running lupu-520 as a *full* install on a Compaq Presario 2100 with 256 RAM, Celeron 1.60GHz.

I *installed* PWidgets 2.3.1 using Puppy Package Manager.
I *uninstalled* PWidgets 2.3.1 (after trying it out) using Puppy Package Manager.

Now, Nathan Wallpaper is gone.

Here is what I tried to regain Nathan Wallpaper Settings:
Reboot - No success.
I placed
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/pet_packages-4/wallpaper-0.5.3.pet
into address line of Firefox 3.6.13. No such directory.
I placed
ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/pet_packages-4/wallpaper-0.5.3.pet
into *find* box of Puppy Package Manager. Not found.
I placed *wallpaper* into terminal screen. No such directory.

Here are screenshots of:
User/share/applications
Terminal Entry *wallpaper*
Firefox address entry results
Puppy Package Manager Search Box entry results

What else can I do to regain Nathan Wallpaper Settings?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give.

"The curse of the widgets"

That's been a hazard with full installs since Puppy421 when the
widgees' first appeared.

Try booting the cd you used to install; rerun the full install and choose
"upgrade" instead of "wipe" on that partition.
No need to rerun grub.

Oh, Gasp!

That install is all fitted out ... customized after hours of work. Sad

Perhaps we should rename *Widgets* to *Wedgies*!

Doing what I said fixes broken links and files and leaves the other
things I've installed alone for the most part.
Nowhere near as radical as replacing a frugal save file.

OK, thank you, rjbrewer. I'll give it a try, maybe in the morning...

If I run into install situations that require more questions on the forum, seems like I should find a different thread to post questions? Any suggestions for threads?
Or, because this relates to activity around PWidgets should I continue here?

Also, I suggest that PWidgets in Puppy Package Manager Description come with a warning label to those who have *full* installs.

I have a Luci246 among my full installs. I'll go mess around with it and
let you know if I run into any upgrade install fix problems.

No need to switch threads at this point.

Edit:

Installed pwidgets on luci246.
Removed pwidgets in ppm.
Nathan had left the building. Smile
Booted the 246 cd straight to desktop, changed nothing.
Ran full install to that partition, "upgrade".
Rebooted; Nathans back; everything is fine, nothing else changed.

I used to spend a lot of time hunting for missing files and broken
links, but this upgrade takes about 2 minutes so it's usually my
first option now when something breaks on a full install.

Edit:

The hunt and peck method.
In this particular case; removing pwidgets empties the folder
at usr/local/apps/wallpaper.

Mount the cd and its' lupu.sfs and copy its' wallpaper folder to the
above spot.

So, I will use *Puppy Universal Installer* to run the Lucid- Puppy-520 *full* install (again)...
PUI tells me that Puppy 520 is installed on sda1: ext2 25.94 GiB.
My choice is to *install Puppy to sda1*.
Will a choice to *upgrade* be presented when I choose *install Puppy to sda1*?

Yes, the installer gives a choice between "wipe" the partition or
"upgrade".

My last edit above means it isn't necessary to run the reinstall;
just replace the missing file from the mounted cd. (doesn't need
to be booted) your choice, works both ways
