Quirky 1.2 feedback
re: "jerky video"
Try this:
1. Install nvidia-195.36.15-k2.6.33.2-1-q from the PPM
2. exit to prompt. Rerun xorgwizard, and "probe"
This worked for me; the radeon driver used the extra libs supplied with nvidia, and flash now works.

So much for thorough testing on my part.Kal wrote:Hi rcrsn51:

I guess BarryK will have to look at this.
Have made 2 new fresh frugal installs of Quirky 120...........one on my old P3 test box (733 mhz/256 mb ram/1 gb swap) and the other install on my main Linux box (Athlon XP 2.0 ghz/1 gb ram/1 gb swap).
Both installs appear to be working correctly so far........although I have a cpu temp indicator in the tray on the Athlon box but not on the old P3.Not really important though since both are desktops.

Re: quirky 1.20 jerky video
I just tried that video on both computers, side by side. The old P3 was very jerky but the faster cpu played it perfectly.I wonder what the magic cpu speed is for smooth streaming video?Béèm wrote:
So to keep the temp lower, I did put min at 0,6GHz and max at 1,0GHz
I see the cpu runs at 1,0GHz and temp is good, but the youtube video Fireflies runs very jerky.
Q1.20 works good on my HP/Compaq. Have not tested to do spotify on Wine but if it works in Q1.00 I trust it would work on the 1.20 too Am I wrong?
I am too lazy to install everything over to 1.2 from 1.0. I am very satisfied with Q1.
The only thing I miss on Q1 are the Quickpet thing.
Is that possible to make available?
Why I don't use Lucid Puppy 5.00? Because trying to run Spotify in wine kills it each time.

This issue (high temperature) has started some versions ago, whether it is now quirky or lucid.
So the question is, what is happening.
Should we all go back to Windows? (bwerk)
So my impression is, that there is a serious flaw in the concept of quirky (and lucid). For me this has started in quirky and now lucid is 'contaminated' as well.
Why should one be forced to reduce his cpu frequency in order to get the temp down?
Do you think distrowatch will be happy once they realize this issue?

Do we know if the rise of temperature is real or a software bug that report high temp which is not that high in reality?
Is it related to the fans not running despite they should start at a certain temperature? Is there any independent way to confirm it is making the circuits dangerous hot?
I am too lazy to spend time on it but to check my gut feeling.
I went to google and put this in the search
linux "high temperature"
Several answer do indicate quirky are not entirely alone?
But I want to know what is going on too. I ahve three computers with laptop chips and they scream warning of high temp within a minute of being booted on the newest quirkies.

That has to do with hardware mostly.
Scaling the cpu lower does not explain the disparity between
the older and newer versions heatwise.
Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.

The lower the CPU frequency, the lower the temperature, but also the more jerky a video plays.
I didn't have the issue in the early quirkies and lucid's.
I didn't have the issue in 4.3.x
What has changed?
Maybe the kernel version with it's driver modules?

Just looking at it from 2 different angles.

Thanks James C
That's the last place I would have thought of looking.
edit;
Nvidea made no noticeable difference with ati mobility m3 agp 2x
It's not a Radeon

Persistant problems
Downloaded and installed Quirky 1.2 along with my save file from 1.2rc. The save file was updated quickly and sound, flash video, ethernet network and local LAN worked right out of the box.
I had to delete and reinstall my HP 6P laserjet to enable printing via samba, but this was no problem.
Unfortunately, the problems reported here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 085#422085 have not been resolved in the new version. Just to summarize:
1. Geany is still not able to open files on an smb mounted drive. Geany 0.19 has not resolved this - the problem did not appear with Puppy 4.31 and Geany 0.18.
2. Printing to a ps-file via CUPS-PDF still has no upper-left margin.
3. A shell script !#bin/sh does not start on booting despite link form executable in path to /root/Startup. (Say . . . this folder contains traytemp and start_cpu_freq as well. Do you suppose this might have something to do with the temperature problems?)

But it's a 72MB install to get a few libs for the radeon driving.
It would be nice to know which libs it are and only install those as the rest of the package is not needed for a ATI/Radeon video controller.

Re: Persistant problems
Can you give an example? What application are you printing from? This appears to work for me. Instead of using the CUPS-PDF driver, have you tried using "Print to File"? Most applications have this print option.drblock2 wrote: Printing to a ps-file via CUPS-PDF still has no upper-left margin.
Can you give an example? This also works for me. Have you declared the script file executable?A shell script !#bin/sh does not start on booting despite link form executable in path to /root/Startup.

Oh well, that didn’t work, but, thanks for trying. Back to deleting modprobe.conf after the fact in rc.sysinit.Here is a better short-term solution.
Locate the file /usr/local/cpu-freq/cpu_func and open it in a text editor.
Line 15 currently says
Code:
if [ ! "`cat /tmp/modprobe_module.tmp`" ] ; then
Change it to
Code:
if [ $? -eq 0 ] ; then
Thanks again, Kal
I think you just need it for the setup, and can then uninstall it.Béèm wrote:Thanks for the info.jpeps wrote:re: "jerky video"

Hi
qrky-120, quick test.
2 bugs and a nuisance per sé
Installed Firefox 3.6.4beta from the repo, only Ibiblio seems to work (nuisance)
Bug1
Firefox failed to run
Bug2
Seamonkey now fails to run from the menu, both FF and SM run from "mozilla" command which I guess picks up the first one alphabetically.
Cheers
