PostPosted: Sun 13 Jun 2010, 05:56    Post_subject: Slow laptop with wine in quirky 1.2
Sub_title: quirky 1.2

As always I use my wine 1.1.39 (as an sfs)
I started my favorite news reader in wine, MesNews
I saw it did run slowly.
But in fact, the whole laptop became slow.
When running htop (see picture), I see I have 4 processes concerning wine (starting with c:\) in which I see overcommitment in memory as well as in cpu usage of 150% (I have 1GB of ram)

I never experienced this before. Quirky 1.2 RC didn't have this issue.

What can be the cause?
Can it be corrected?

Installed Quirky 1.2 frugal to mini-itx pc with intel board using SiS chipset and boot parameter acpi=off. Works very well so far with the exception of internet access.

I used the standard network wizard to connect to LAN eth0 interface as I usually do with other puppies. Connects just fine.

On reboot I have to run network wizard over again. Settings were not saved.

Are you behind a router or a broadband modem?

Router works fine with the network wizard. You need to do a save in the setup procedure when asked.

A modem connection established with roaring penguin in Quirky doesn't reconnect upon reboot. If this should be your problem, ask again and I will give you a work around.

Some scanners, including models from the Canon MPxxx series, won't work in Quirky because libusb 1.0 is missing. This has been reported in BK's blog.

I have posted an updated version of the SANE pixma backend here that should make these Canon scanners functional.

It looks like the update will also work in Lupu after a symlink is applied.
Code:
ln -s /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62.0.0 /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.7

desktop drive icons show 0GB space

Barry replied on my PM and in his blog he announced a solution.
With the help of tazoc (lighthouse puppy) I tried there and the solution did work.
I am confident that the solution will work in quirky also.
(as well as in lucid 500)

Eh... yeah I did save when prompted. Know how to use it and reproduced it several times to make sure I had not skipped a step.

I was lax in not stating that I am behind a router. I have a windows/linux network with 4 computers 1 running Vista, two running puppy variants for use and for testing and one running Vector Linux. I have an 80gig hard drive on my mini-itx pc and usually run a handful of puppies in addition to my day to day os for testing and compiling as I have time.

This is the first time that I have had the problem on this box so it seemed a bit odd to me.

To Barry K.

I don't know if you watch out for feedback on Quirky 013 thread still.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=427833#427833

Very detailed suggestion from that user. linked to it just in case.

After installing Gimp from the puppy-quirky repo, the menu entry does not work. It is trying to run the program "gimp2.6" instead of just "gimp".

Has anyone managed to install the ATI Catalyst 10.6 driver in Quirky 1.2?
Quirky's kernel and Xorg version are now supported by the latest driver, but I get this error message in /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log after compiling the kernel module:

Looks like there are some important files missing from Puppy's Kernel Source 2.6.23.2 SFS (!) - without these files the AMD installer can't complete its task.

while you wait for a solution you could change the run action for mp3 to be run by gxine instead. a work around.

Since the problems with mplayer are annoying me I tried the suggestion of somebody from the IRC channel and installed xfmedia. Beside the UI being a nightmare it doesn't work at all. I get a vertical flickering line, which is actually a totally undersized window. After making the window bigger it doesn't show anything, but flickering in the shape of the window.

I also updated the flashplayer to 10.1 using libflashplayer.so from the official tar.gz download and it helped to reduce the CPU usage with the zattoo website a bit, but rendered youtube videos unwatchable for me at 480p and even 360p (I have an older laptop below the 2Ghz), although the CPU usage is quite low. Reverting to the 10.0 version, that came with quirky, makes youtube videos watchable again.

There is a description on how to set up flash 10.1 properly in puppy somewhere on the forum. I used that one and it works great now.

Try to find that one before you give up. Smile

OK, I will try to find it. A quick search didn't reveal anything. My main problem is to get quirky to create a session file (maybe an issue with a frugal installation on a quirky full installation?) so I can install the devx and try to compile mixx and sdlmess, since those are programs I use.

Ah, something else I ran into. It appears installing Quirky on ext4 doesn't work. Or to be precise, grub doesn't seem to like ext4. I was having boot errors with it.

Is it possible to enable the power/clock management (Cool'n'Quiet) feature for AMD K10 processors (Athlon II, Phenom II) in Quirky?

Puppy is unusable on these processors because they work at full speed and maximum voltage all the time.

For example, a PC with a Quad-core Phenom II X4 965 eats a lot of power and sounds like a jet engine when running idle in Quirky. This is no good Sad

These CPUs should operate at 800MHz and use mimimum voltage in idle mode, just as on Windows.

To Barry & co. : please fix this serious issue.
