I downloaded the ISO image of the Lighthouse 500 Mariner and ask for your help.
This ISO model I am not able to burn to CD using K3b, Nero, CDXburner they do not recognize this type of image (iso.ob!).
Hi,
The ISO is at http://www.lhpup.org/release/lhp500/Lig ... ariner.iso and I would rename it without the .ob, check the md5, and burn to a blank 80min/700M data CD-R using the Burn Image item in your burning software (should be in the Tools Menu of K3b.)
Hope that helps,

Dear Tarzoc,

Thank you for your help!
My question is: This image iso.ob! can be transformed into a normal iso image? software that could make this work? I downloaded the linux Epidemic, it also came with this image format. According to site information system, this image can be configured in BIOS to be bootable directly from the hd. The link you provided is the iso image file normal?
thanks for the help!
Congratulations for your work!

Any ideas why?
Hi Brown Mouse,
I've not seen that happen, but it sounds like something related to display driver or KMS. If you're using GRUB, add xforcevesa nomodeset to your kernel line. You might try a different selection in xorgwizard or install the LHP_sys-info pet in my last post and use it to attach sys-info-__.tgz to a post so I can study it.
-TazOC
Hi tazoc
Thanks for the ideas.I already tried other selections in xorgwizard but the ones that do allow me to boot up still have the same effect on shutdown.
I even tried manually creating a savefile but I then found I couldn't boot at all.
The mystery continues

*Edit

Success!!!
As soon as I added 'xforcevesa nomodeset' to grub menu.lst it sorted my problem.

Many thanks tazoc

You're very welcome! Yes, all ISOs I've posted at http://lhpup.org/download500.htm are normal .iso images. I've never come across an iso.ob image. If you obtained the Lighthouse ISO from somewhere else, please post or PM the link to me.

I just checked http://www.epidemiclinux.org, and their images appear to be normal .iso also. Maybe there is something on your current system that is changing what you download?

An ISO image cannot be directly booted from, without burning to a CD/DVD, or mounting the image (generic Linux example:)

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /mnt/virt-drive0
mount <pathto/ISOname> /mnt/virt-drive0 -o loop
and copying the contents to a partition set up to boot with GRUB. GRUB can be installed in Puppy/Lighthouse from (Menu | System | Utility | GRUB Bootloader Config.) Edit: I posted a few sample GRUB entries for Lighthouse and various puppies.

Running Lighthouse pup 5F Mariner on ASUS A7V8X-X mobo, AMD Athlon XP2500, 1 gig memory, NVidia Geforce FX5200 graphics card.
Devx added and nvidia173 installed.

So far, liking it a lot. Runs everything I want - including Lazarus, which I could not get running in LUPU.
However, I have two problems - one show stopper and one niggle.

First the show stopper: I cannot set up my printer. First Puppy to fail, and I've tried many. "Menu-setup-cups printer wizard" opens "file:///usr/share/doc/cups_shell.htm", no CUPS web interface follows. Close SeaMonkey and start again gives opening page AND CUPS page. Click on "Manage Printers" - no option to add printer. Click on "Administration" and "Add Printer", fill in Name etc and click on "Continue". Drop down box does not list my printer (connected and switched on) or LPT1 where it is connected. I can get no further. As a matter of interest USB ports are not listed either.
Printer is an old Epson Stylus Color C400 - works great with Puppy 431 and many others.

Second problem (niggle really): Clicking on a desktop drive icon always starts Pmount, from which I have to mount the drive and then open ROX-filer. I like the Puppy 431 system where a single click mounts the drive/partition and opens ROX-filer. How can I make it work the 431 way?

Just noticed another problem - when writing this I nudged the mouse and its pointer moved over another window. Immediately I could not type in this (Geany) until the pointer was moved back over this (Geany) window.

Any ideas on any of the above?

Screensaver and scanning

#367 Post by its-me-again »

Hi i have a problem with the screensaver. it works ok but when i come to restart computer it gives a black screen with the mouse pointer i can move. i have to restart x to get back in loosing work etc. i have turned the scteensaver mode off atm so it is not a problem. would you have any ideas as to what i can do to fix this.

also i find the puppy scanner to be a very pore quality it seems to scann with pixles no matter what resolution. I was wondering if you can find a scanner for slax or slackwhere i could install. I tried googling and asked in #slackware they were not help in finding anything.

PS I really do like Lighthouse pup. is is a clean running os with the feel and features of a fully installed one.

LPT1 and screensaver problems

#368 Post by nickdobrinich »

@Ledster:
In Lighthouse I have the same problem with LPT1 and its parallel port connection, even though this had worked in earlier versions of Puppy.
I tried some things with LPD/LPR Host or Printer like lpr://dev/parallel and lpr:///Mariner/queue but nothing worked.
I was lucky in that my Lexmark laser also had a USB connection which CUPS discovered and configured.

@its-me-again:
I have run into this screensaver problem as well.
There appear to be 2 screensavers involved.
(1) In LHP LookNFeel, stop the screensaver under (7) Pup Screensaver Setup.
(2) Under Desktop > Desktop Settings > Xscreensaver Preferences, you can configure this screensaver and it will work ok IF, on the Advanced tab under Display Power Management., you uncheck Power Management Enabled.
Kind of confusing.

@its-me-again,
I'm updating the scanner and USB libraries for the next release. You can find them here: libusb1-1.0.8-q1.pet | sane-backends-1.0.21-q1.pet | xsane-0.997-patched-q1.pet

@Ledster & its-me-again,
Please let us know which window manager/desktop you're using. If you aren't sure just type ver in a terminal and look for the line CURRENTWM=

It would also be helpful if you could install the Lighthouse sys-info PET and follow the prompts to attach the output to your reply.
Thanks,
TazOC

attaching printer problems

#371 Post by CLAM01 »

This is to all who have the problem with CUPS in LHP not showing lpr or usb ports.

I ran into the cups failing to pull up the interface and downloaded the latest puppy cups program, to assure it was there for clicking the menu entry to pul up. When it then did come up I found no lpr or usb. All I found was network interface.

I went looking in the cups files to see if the others were somewhere and found the cups program listed as owned by Apple (cups is proprietary, not gnu). Apple computers do just about everything via network attachment (even through usb). so the Apple cups interface has no lpr or direct usb. You should be able to make the Apple cups program work by using wine, I would guess using samba. I don't know that for sure, or how, because my solution to network printing not to. I deleted the junk and print using puppy 431: I store my to print files in a "print" directory I made in /mnt/home outside the pup-save file, or in one on a usb stick, attach my printer and reboot in a pup431set up to find and print through it.

According to web info cups is not owned by Apple, Apple only "owns" its own Apple/BSD network version. The cups group does still maintain a regular unix-linux cups that has the non-network parts Apple ripped out. Apparently when puppy last downloaded to update to cups' latest it got Apples version. The old version in puppy 431 is still availalble, but it probably needs a number or letter changed to be recognized by LHP. I'm one of those people who doesn't get around to figuring those things out if I can find a half-assed way to just make it work, so I can put it off...

Hi Ledster,
Thank you for the sys-info. Same here, for #2 I was going to suggest Desktop drive icon mngr | Icon Handler | enable 'Use app appropriate to media' | OK; and for #3 Menu | Desktop | JWM Configuration | Window focus model | enable Click-to-focus | Restart JWM.

But for parallel port printing I have no idea--I gave away my old printer before I even knew about Puppy Linux! In LHP, CUPS picks up a Canon MP610 (USB) from the Administration tab | Find new printers. If anyone has a parallel port fix for CUPS I'd be happy to apply it.

I'm re-writing the sys-info and report-video scripts to cat both reports and X logs into one text file and generate a .gz (instead of the tarball .tgz), to attach on the forum without renaming.

3D-Demo

#373 Post by tazoc »

@neurino,
On the machine that won't run 3D-Demo can you type xdriinfo in a terminal for me? I'm updating 3D-Demo and it uses the o/p of that command. If you get nothing, please copy and paste this:

Code: Select all

glxinfo|grep -v '0x'|grep -v 'GL_'|grep -v 'GLX_'
Thanks,

I really like Lighthouse Pup 5.00 F, but one thing is driving me crazy.
That has to do with focus on an application.
As an example, if I open a terminal in a directory and the mouse pointer happens to be outside of the opened terminal window, I cannot input anything with the keyboard.
As long as the mouse pointer is in the opened window, that window has focus and I can use it.
The problem is that even without clicking on anything outside of the open window, if the mouse pointer happens to drift outside of the open window, focus to the program is lost until the mouse pinter is repositioned.
Is this repairable?

Great effort thus far

#376 Post by gcmartin »

@TazOC As a native LiveDVD, this runs great. Very fast. No current issues.

I did run into a snafu with attempts to use the 1.8 version of SFS-TCZ_Linker-1.8.pet on a devx SFS.

But, I need to retrace my steps before reporting this.

Anyway, great work.
P.S. Check PM

5F looks really nice.

Only issues I'm having are two minor ones...
1) My printer isnt working agin (it seems to be hit or miss in puppy. Sometimes it works... sometimes it doesnt. I havent spent to much time trying to figure out why.

2) Network config isnt saved on reboot. I know this cropped up in an earlier version of 5 (If Im remembering correctly), dont know if anyone else is having this problem.

Otherwise, looks awesome!

Thanks, Q5sys. By chance is your network Wireless WEP? If so, try ConnectWireless in /Startup/DisabledItems. If it works, you can execute the script /usr/local/bin/ConnectWireless at boot up from /etc/rc.d/rc.local.

Which printer do you have and is it USB?

Finally got around to running this (5.00F) one. There really is something strange about your d/l system, though - have checked it over a period of weeks, different version numbers, different machines, etc. Always the same - it shows a page of code. The smaller deltas d/l normally. Wget worked, though.
Having said that, this is a truly remarkable distro and v5 is much better even than earlier ones. Quite frankly, this offering deserves to be placed in front of a much larger audience. To see it is to like it. Not sure what the problem is with the publicity. johnbiles, of course, adopted the M$ tactic of not releasing his LegacyOS until punters, including guess who, were screaming for it. He also had Ladislav list it separately, although it seems to have disappeared from the top100 despite peaking in the teens. How about the name? Lighthouse is a bit odd? Are you from Maine? Not the sort of object one normally associates with puppies nor OS es? Re-branding never did anyone much harm? Marketing is not really my bag, but out there on the West Coast you're floundering in the world's most accomplished exponents.
With work so good, you deserve more recognition. Furthermore, no-one can ask for better, more rapid and personalised support for all their minutia.
Is there a downside. Scarcely dare to mention it, but it does deserve a proper browser! I'd suggest you ignore the howls of protest by folks too indolent to work with the amazing performance of the world's fastest.
Keep up the good work.

i found a simple solution for saving the i915.modeset=1 kernel boot option. i installed lighthouse on my sda1 drive with puppy universal installer then went to mnt/home and opened the extlinux.conf text file and changed:

"default vmlinuz initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=usbflash nmi_watchdog=0 xforcevesa nomodeset loglevel=3"
to
"default vmlinuz initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=usbflash nmi_watchdog=0 i915.modeset=1 loglevel=3"

and then rebooted after creating a pupsavefile
im guessing this will work for all the kernel options but i didnt test it.

i was frustrated with this for a long time so i hope this helped.
