Hi and thanks for the links and suggestions. e17 (Enlightenment) has its own compositing system and a very good one, so I don't think C-F would be compatible or desirable as e17's effects alone are stunning. When I tried elive full distro a while back I found it difficult to configure, and downloads were not free. I have not had a chance to try e17 with Puppy or Lighthouse though.
Macpup opera 2 uses enlightnment its a 431 baised os try it out and see what you think.

LH Mariner 5D and how SFSs can be handled on LiveDVD

On the topic in the above qnote, please help me understand what's wrong with this logic. I know the Mariner ISO places its SFSs in the root of the LIveDVD. I also know that Puppy BootManager Utility expects to find its SFSs in /mnt/home on the running system. Let say I:
  1. Open you Mariner ISO
  2. Leave the base system SFS, BUT move all other SFSs into /mnt/home folder
  3. Burn this "new" ISO as a Multi-Session.

  • When the system reboots shouldn't I see it load the save session before copying the main?

SFS files on boot CD

#320 Post by CLAM01 »

gcmartin,

What you describe doing to get sfs files in a live cd session sounds near to what I do: What I do is install LHP Mariner, set up features the way I want them, then add sfs files to /mnt/home, then add those sfs files I want to my system using >setup>wizardwizard>configure startup. I add Mariner and KDE there first, reboot and set them up, then add more, because I have had problems adding all at once. Then I remaster a DVD, not CD, because my remaster comes to about a gigabyte. The sfs files I use regularly, like opera, open office, along with additional pets I add, are incorporated in the remaster dvd. The dvd can be run as a live session (I have a swap file and enough ram so the dvd loads all into ram) with or without a pup-save file.

If you want to run like this for security you want to close your dvd when you make it (if it is rewriteable) and turn off lhp's mount all partitions feature (>filesystem on wbar >/mnt >automount.desktop, then uncheck the automount box), to not show anyone who looks in everything in your system. Then make your own directories on a disk partition, or a usb-stick partition and remember to mount that and save to it whatever you want to save from your live/ram session before you shut down. You can also frugal install from the dvd, with or without a pup-save. Without a pup-save you can make your separate save directories in /mmt/home, or in another partition. If you do a frugal install, before you go on the web with it make an md5 of your spup.sfs, and keep it there with the sfs in /mnt/home, so you can quick and easy check your pup.sfs file for integrity from time to time. If someone breaks in and adds something to it the check will fail and you can delete the whole file, then copy the unchageable one on your dvd to your /mnt/home. The replacement should load and run just like the replaced one. Puppy's main security problem is that anything that is added by anyone during a session that gets put anywhere but /home/spot or a temp location in /root gets saved to your pup-save. It then gets installed or re-added or re-started with your next start-up and can run. If you encrypt your pup-save, the addenda just get encrypted, too. Your way around is to save out what you want and obliterate the contents of your pup-save (Not your pup-save, itself: go to /mnt/home in a live session, or from another puppy, open your pup-save, which will mount it, click drag to box in everything, then delete-quiet. Then go back to /mnt/home and click the pup-save (now empty) again to unmount it. When you boot next clean content will be restored to the empty directory and on you can go.

You can also make a remaster DVD of a stock LHP and add sfs files to the disk. Instead of just burning the disk from /tmp, where it is made, select the option to save the remaster build to disk. Then you can open the build directory and add mariner and KDE and additional sfs files to the build, the way Mariner and KDE sfs's are on a stock LHP mariner CD. If you add more than those two, though, I think they might not always load in correct sequence.

What I do, instead, for an all-on-one-disk set-up, is first burn the iso leaving the disk open. Then I put all the sfs files and pets I want to add in two directories and then burn those on the disk after the iso. Then I close the session. To use the sfs files on the disk, frugal install the iso, then open the dvd, go to the sfs and pet files directories and copy from those to the frugal install /mnt/home. Note that if you copy the directories, not just the sfs files in them, to /mnt/home they will be down a layer in their directories and won't be found.

The above works for me. I think it should work for everyone.

Thank you gcmartin. I'm glad to hear that jrb has tested the new SFS Linker with Lighthouse. I'm busy with final testing and debugging of the next release LHP 5.00 F, but when I have some time I will try it myself. Here is jrb's post:

Try it out! J
Please see the notes at http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=47976 before using it, and post questions or bugs there also.

You're welcome! All the SFS I have tested are posted at http://www.lhpup.org/download500.htm#SFS I received a PM about CairoDock but have not tested it yet. Requests for other apps are welcome.

BootManager won't see SFS files until they are copied to /mnt/home on the drive (not CD/DVD) that has the pupsave. So even if /sr0/mnt/home has them, they still need to be copied to a hard drive or flash drive, whichever was used for the pupsave. Remastering on the other hand, includes the SFS files within a newer, much larger the main file. IIRC the main file is loaded at boot before the pupsave.[Edit: the pupsave is mounted before the main file.]
Do you know if there is some way to copy Frugal to a LiveDVD so that it supports LH with the "installed" SFSs?
Except maybe SFS-TCZ_Linker, remastering--merging the SFS files into the main file (see CLAM01's post above) is the only way I know of.

I appreciate the ideas and feedback. :)

Does this comment imply that I should copy the /mnt/home folder from the LiveDVD to the running (ram based) system's root before running BootManager, then run BootManager so that it finds the files and builds the correct boot measure and tables....Once Bootmanager is completed, should I Then to Reboot the running system allowing the system to '"save" the session to the LiveDVD/LiveCD? Is this what would work. Would the Lighthouse boot process then find the appropriate folders properly?

The only way I know of to save your session directly to CD/DVD is with the experimental Multi-session LiveDVD (PUPMODE=77), probably quite slow, especially with KDE and I don't know how it handles SFS files. This is at line 115 of /usr/sbin/bootmanager:

Code: Select all

#for multisession cd, extra sfs files have to be on the cd...
#v3.97 sfs files are at '/', saved with a session...
if [ "$PUPMODE" = "77" ];then
# MPATTERN="/dev/${PDEV1} "
# EXTRASFSMNTPT="`mount | grep "$MPATTERN" | cut -f 3 -d ' '`"
# #...it may not be mounted, then gets mounted below.
# MSGx="Note2: These files are on the Puppy boot CD"
 MSGz='/'
# if [ "$EXTRASFSMNTPT" = "" ];then
  EXTRASFSMNTPT='/'
 xEXTRASFSMNTPTx="" #100711
  MSGx="Note2: All SFS files have to get loaded into RAM from CD"
# fi
fi
If you boot Lighthouse from CD/DVD, at shutdown you'll see
You have booted off a live-CD or DVD, and you can now save your personal settings and files to a USB Flash drive, Zip drive, floppy disk, or any hard drive partition (including NTFS). The session will be saved as a single file, named spupsave.3fs, which has an ext3 filesystem inside it.

However, if you have burnt the CD/DVD as multisession (not closed), then sessions can be saved as additional tracks to the CD/DVD -- each saved session will appear on the CD/DVD as a directory with all the saved files in it, not as a single file. THIS IS STILL EXPERIMENTAL

Select <SAVE> (just type S) to choose a partition to save this session as file spupsave.3fs...
Select <SAVE TO CD> (TAB then ENTER) to save session to CD/DVD (multisession) (EXPERIMENTAL)...
BootManager can't be run in first boot / LiveCD/DVD mode (PUPMODE=5), only after saving your session and rebooting. So I think for incorporating SFS files into PUPMODE=5, either remastering or the new SFS-TCZ_Linker are the best options.

Thanks for your insights. I know you are busy with getting to the next release and I appreciate your looking at this.

I believe this thread's mission is to address getting to the next release of LH and Mariner, so I will open a separate thread to discuss LH, Mariner, and SFS processing.. This will not "clutter" this thread or this thread's mission.

I don't want to detract from the "Prime Directive". Thanks again tazoc

You should never leave the DVD open in general use. if you save and use the same save file from cd/dvd all the time as it gets bigger or full it will break and you will get a big error runing slow and nothing can be done.

the idea is good one though as long as you keep the save file small and wipe it out after you have finished or save it to the computer itself. I had prioblems saving to cd. adn will never so it again.

@its-me-again thanks for your insights.

On the subject of LiveDVD (Its been moved here), I have been using LiveDVD for a while and haven't even come close to consuming the 4.8GB, yet. Just my usage, of course, and it may be different from yours. And, I have a need for this because of some very obvious advantages.. But thanks for your insights.

Hi all i wonder if you have heard of teh new cloud bible built on nop quirky.

it has a good potential. http://cloudbible.wordpress.com/2010/09 ... iso-notes/

it was produced by aome church of christ in america i think.

everthing is online. it is a good thing.

i would miodify the linkx fo my country and stuff so its more userfriendly for use users in NZL maby even get my church to officially let me link them to it. it wold be a good idea. s a witnessing tool. and it is lighter then other christin puppyes i have seen.

this idea would be the best to use as it does fit on a mini cd. well i tested the version 100 sofar. now there is that updatd version ^ see link &^

Synaptics touchpad palm detect

#331 Post by nickdobrinich »

For laptops with Synaptics touchpads (Dell D600 series and others), I found it helpful to add the following to /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the "Synaptics Mouse" section.
This will keep the cursor from jumping around when you are typing.
Option "PalmDetect" "1"
Option "PalmMinWidth" "10"
Option "PalmMinZ" "10"

Also, this will enable touchpad tapping:
Option "MaxTapTime" "225"
Option "TapButton1" "1"

There are many other options to fool with.
Try synclient -l
from a command console to get the complete list.

5F

#333 Post by Barburo »

Quick first impressions:
I set up and ran 5F using a copy of my 5D pupsave file.
Update went OK as advertised. I used bootmanager to select new "5F-versions" of Mariner and KDE .sfs files. I think the ability to keep .sfs files in the sub-dir makes good sense, so I used it for the mariner and kde .sfs files. I found that it works fine but bootmanager does not distinguish between .sfs files in /mnt/home from those in /mnt/home/lhp5F so I need to move those other .sfs files to their appropriate sub-dirs so they do not appear in the .sfs list unless common to several versions. (... but does this feature work for previous versions?)
Rebooted into LXDE (that had been my 5D default). Keeps the background through reboots, and has the new network interface system tray app.
Tried KDE4 but it quits before the desktop - falls out to the selection menu. Tried dropping out of X and back again - same. Tried rebooting - same.
Tried Xfce which worked OK but lost the background on reboot.
I am using the same C-F .sfs file as before.

No, that feature is new for Lighthouse 5.00 F and the latest Woof, and only works if the pupsave is in a subdirectory. When booting from GRUB use psubdir parameter e.g., psubdir=lhp5F on the kernel line. So for now, keep SFS files for other versions at /mnt/home.

Hmm, strange. What is the o/p of

Code: Select all

plasma-desktop --version
kdeinit4 --version
if that looks normal, exit to command line and type xwin startkde44 (that bypasses the logout panel, which runs from xwin startkde.)
Tried Xfce which worked OK but lost the background on reboot.
I am using the same C-F .sfs file as before.
B.
If Xfce misses the background, edit /etc/xfce/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc, inserting 2 lines at the beginning like this:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
. /etc/profile #100907 TazOC (for wallpaper bug reported by Barburo)
sleep .5 #100907 TazOC
(There must be a space between '.' and /etc/profile.)

non fatal error on shutdown

#335 Post by nickdobrinich »

I upgraded a frugal install from Lighthouse D to F via the Xdelta3 patches.
Updated Mariner and Voyager via Xdelta3 also.
Worked perfectly,
Upgrade time, including the download, was maybe a half hour. Great work.
My old D spupsave.2fs updated on startup as well.

A couple of small things.
On every reboot or shutdown, after the spupsave.2fs already saved message, I get 5 occurrences of:
modprobe: FATAL /sys is not mounted.
I have no automount drives and no harm is caused by this other than being startled by the word FATAL.

qps fails to start with: qps-qt4 not found.
qps-qt3 works correctly.
