It shows up in the menu, but does nothing. Don't know what I'm missing.

What version of Puppy?
What version of VLC?

That's a very annoying avatar.

Have you tried running it from the terminal to see any error messages?

I haven't been able to get any other players to work in these new
versions.

I use Ttuuxxxs vlc-0.8.6h-engv5-1 on all my 4xx series installs.

It says do not run as root, and to change permissions for vlc-wrapper.

Interesting; I didn't know it could do that.
I just watched a youtube video on how to use it and was able to
watch a couple shoutcast streams.

Thanks for calming the avatar; I was getting Hypnotized. Laughing

You probably need these three libraries,

libadns1_1.4-2_i386.deb

libavcodec51_0.svn20080206-18_i386.deb

libavutil49_0.svn20080206-18_i386.deb

Installing from the puppy package manager leaves out these libs, which you can find out by starting vlc from console,

Once I installed these libs from debian.org, vlc worked.

As has already been posted earlier in the thread, in the terminal enter "su spot" (without the quotes) then "vlc" (again without the quotes).
working fine on my install of 5.0.1, see screenie.

This variant has been tested in the -=Linux Puppy-4.30=-.

In the beginning i have installed these RPMs:
bless-0.5.2-5.fc7.i386.rpm ; bless-doc-0.5.2-5.fc7.i386.rpm ; gtk-sharp2-2.10.0-4.0.120asp.i386.rpm ; mono-core-1.2.3-5.fc7.i386.rpm .

Then, i have applied someone's recipe from the one internet forum.
Here that is:

Quote:
Step-1: open a hexeditor(for example -=bless=-) if you are using kde desktop then use khex editor.

Step-2: Now open vlc binary

Step-3: Now search for the following string geteuid which is look like this

Code:

ddset.stderr.geteuid._libc_start_man
Since I'm usuing version 0.9.9a-2 so I found it online numbers 1550-1560 .

Step-4: Now press insert button from keyboard and change string into

Code:

ddset.stderr.getppid._libc_start_man
Step-5: click on Save

I have saved the -=vlc=- file into the -=tmp=- folder and then copied this file into that place where the original is.
