It would seem that with this latest Arcade one MUST have internet access via Puppy to get the bits to make things work. Two queries.

You say there is NO browser so you have to choose one. How do you download one with no browser to start with. Does it use an ftp app or something?

Is it possible to download the bits needed using another OS and then install them into the Arcade system? To do this would need to know the address of where the stuff is. Is this possible to find in the scripts/elesewhere?

There is a browser installer tool which uses wget to download the PET file of your choice..

(Wget is a download tool built into Puppy, it will download loads of stuff for you easily.. )

I have basically kept up with the latest Puppy developments, in that a browser choice and additional software can be downloaded easily after bootup..

This was done to give more choice and keep the ISO size down, which keeps growing as more systems are emulated

You can get all the files found in Puppy Arcade 8 from http://ppm.scottjarvis.com

I will see what I can do, although changing the name of the main sfs file will mess up save files from other versions, but I dn't think that will be an issue..

Thanks for the answer scottman.

I understand why you have done this but I personally dislike this approach of having to go online with Puppy to get extra stuff. Apart from it not working out of the box the sfs or pet approach is more helpful because you can download these with anything (or put them on a CD distribution). Needless to say I cannot easily go online with Puppy now. My dialup modem no longer works and my broadband has a usb modem (speedtouch 330) which works with Windows 9x or XP (not Windows 7 so I have a problem there as well). I know I could buy some hardware to solve it but it was fine before and now Puppy Linux is following the Windows route of making it harder to keep old stuff working and hiding information (behind a pretty front end) to solve my particular need. I've nothing against the pretty front ends for the technically deficient but I kinda like the info as well so that the technically proficient can continue working as well!

As to making the size of the iso smaller that is really putting on a false face. Yes, the iso is smaller but it doesn't provide the intent of the puplet! In order to make it work you need to get some more stuff. You have to download the larger amount anyway. It is no different having to dowload a 150MB iso than having to download a 100MB iso and 50MB of add-ons.

I'm not criticising you scottman. It is the whole process of demanding that people must be connected to the internet with broadband to get all they need to make their software work as expected! We are isolating those caught the other side of the digital divide.

Firstly, I understand entirely, I tried to make sure all addons were optional.

So technically, in PA8 you don't have to go online and download anything.
Everything required to emulate roms is present by default, besides BIOS files of course.
They are optional extras, such as browser, more exotic emulators, larger MAME frontends, .
ICPUG wrote:Apart from it not working out of the box the sfs or pet approach is more helpful because you can download these with anything (or put them on a CD distribution).
Again, it all works out of the box - except browser.
I may include Dillo as default next time, for the dialup crowd, like your good self.
Do you have a Dillo pet lying around? I can post one here..
ICPUG wrote:Needless to say I cannot easily go online with Puppy now. My dialup modem no longer works and my broadband has a usb modem
Just a thought, but I take my USB stick to a local internet cafe when I can't get connected at home.
If I need to download something large or important, it's quick and easy.
But if you have no internet cafes nearby, that is a dumb idea
ICPUG wrote:I know I could buy some hardware to solve it but it was fine before and now Puppy Linux is following the Windows route of making it harder to keep old stuff working and hiding information (behind a pretty front end) to solve my particular need.
Puppy Arcade is still based on 4.2, I have not updated the base, if you were wondering.
Which version was the last to work with your hardware?
Also, I added CLInet ( a console network tool) to v8, maybe that'll help..
ICPUG wrote:As to making the size of the iso smaller that is really putting on a false face. Yes, the iso is smaller but it doesn't provide the intent of the puplet! In order to make it work .. you have to download the larger amount anyway.
Again, you don't need any of the addons to play roms, except the BIOS.
So the intent of the puplet is not lost, I think..
They simply add a few more features and GUIs, if users want them.

No offence taken at all.. I agree with you that forcing people to download stuff to get things working as expected is not good.

I think I got the balance right here - I can't include any BIOS.
Only the browser could be called a big fat omission
But with Dillo only 600kb, easily added through the browser-installer, I think it's not too bad.

Many thanks once again for the detailed reply.

It seems from your response I may have misinterpreted just what has to be downloaded after booting PA8. The reference to BIOS downloads suggested to me that this was pretty fundamental and had to be downloaded but maybe not.

My main interest is Commodore 64/PET and Amiga (the latter I know I have to download ROMs). Maybe if I can find the right script I will find the web address of what to download.

Whatever, it seems it may be more working out of the box than I thought so I will download and see!

Just a point of info. I am actually on broadband (2.2Mb - I'm urban but too far away from the exchange to get higher speed) but only via Windows 9x at the moment. However, I try to consider what it must be like for those, even here in the UK, in more rural surrounds where broadband is not an option - or if it is then it is low speed. I comment accordingly!

Your comment on being Puppy 4 based pleases me. Puppy 5 gives a bit of a problem with some intel video chipsets so there is less hastle with Puppy 4.

Keep up the good work!

My pleasure.
ICPUG wrote:The reference to BIOS downloads suggested to me that this was pretty fundamental and had to be downloaded but maybe not.
You will need BIOS files (lots of them for VICE), but all the other downloads or optional GUIs and so on, as I said.
ICPUG wrote:My main interest is Commodore 64/PET and Amiga (the latter I know I have to download ROMs). Maybe if I can find the right script I will find the web address of what to download.
Here are the Amiga and VICE system (BIOS) files..
http://ppm.scottjarvis.com/emulation/Am ... a-libs.pet (306kb)
http://ppm.scottjarvis.com/emulation/Co ... e-libs.pet (486kb)
ICPUG wrote:I try to consider what it must be like for those, even here in the UK, in more rural surrounds where broadband is not an option - or if it is then it is low speed. I comment accordingly!
Agreed.. British broadband coverage and pricing is (surprisingly, for many) piss poor..
It is almost certainly the same if not worse elsewhere,
so maybe we should take that into account when making puplets and so forth...

I worked hard to rip out all the crap and waste, while allowing users to have
as much emulation as possible, 'out of the box', with the smallest ISO possible..

I chose to leave out lots of stuff that, when removed, did not harm the quality of the emulation.

Personally, I make, download and keep sfs files, stored on my USB or hard drive, that I can add to any small puplet..
These SFS files can then, generally, make any puplet fully-featured..

So I generally like to get small ISOs, which I can add to, if required...
ICPUG wrote:Your comment on being Puppy 4 based pleases me.
I'm still sure that TurboPup is (for now) the best base for any gaming puplet.
I think TurboPup is fairly unique as it uses 0% CPU power when you're not making it do something.
In TurboPup, 'idle' really means 'idle' - giving more power to your games.

Even Puppy Arcade uses a little more RAM and some CPU power when it is 'idle'

hoping for a .sfs

#23 Post by stray »

I'm running PuppyArcade_v5.sfs (thats not the exact filename, but thats the version.)..
is that the latest .sfs available?
I dont have time to figure out how to turn an .iso into a .sfs, but would be interested in checking out the upgraded aspects. (I have too many different boot cds to juggle as it is.)

Thanks for your effort!

Yes, that's the latest SFS available, which is not quite out of date... Puppy Arcade 8 is a big improvement over v5..

I will make a new SFS in the future, at some point, with the latest updates and apps..

And thanks for the mirrors... I won't need to upload to the link you suggested though - this is one of the first releases where noone complained about my choice of mirror! :)

thanks, i'll add this to my next version I think...

I'm STILL trying to find the old broadcom drivers that worked better than the newer one, which is found in 4.2..

Anyone wanna tell me how to add the older, better broadcom drivers to my next 4.2 based puplet?
That would be very nice...

Umm i would assume ud just put the drivers in the module list....if u can find them ofc....or you could make some kind of..program for drivers..like u did with the browser.....detect the hardware...then download, install it...

and uhh my pc specs...or laptop..w/e

intel atom 1..6ghz duel core
1 gig ram
3.75 gig hd
intel 945 vid

the functin keys worked...video works..audio...ethernet...touchpad...the 2nd monitor port works...just mirrors my desktop atm..dont really care to attempt fukn with it to make it 2 separate desktops. But ye..only thing i had to fix was wifi...and..that took like 5 mins....and changed my wallpaper lol...but havent tested to much more things as i was fixin my other pc -_- but its runnin nice..only thing i need is vent now..and speaking of that..

Can you PLEASE do this for me?
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=56734
( i asked the creators of mangler to do it..but they said...they are not maintainers of puppy ...even though they have ticket system if u want it to support ur os...but meh )

edit: i also just added this
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=50696
for battery...its probly in ur netbook version or somen like it..but chea.

edit...

when i try to start n64 game...it says:
The core thread recieved a SIGSEGV signal.
This means it tried to access protected memory.
Maybe you have set a wrong ucode for one of the plugins!

(tried it on 2 games...)

This means opengl is not setup properly, I think it may an issue on EeePCs..
you can check the Puppeee thread for xorg and xorg driver files..

It's been around a while, on a previous puppy arcade thread...

Nestopia is at http://ppm.scottjarvis.com/emulation/NE ... 0_i486.pet

And bSNES requires QT, that may be why it's not available for Puppy - large dependencies... and there are smaller alternatives...
(although not as accurate in the emulation department, of course)

SDLMAME seems fussier about romsets than xmame.. it must be that..
i have metal slug roms that work in xmame, but not sdlmame...

allright...so just keep tryin roms basically lol

this really wont be used for much gamen...as i kinda retired this pc from that..i used to have it rigged from a mini laptop...to a dekstop..playing Sa-mp (www.sa-mp.com) ...bout 12-20 fps lol...playble most of the time.(when i had ubuntu on it..and ran samp..via an asi loader and an algorithm for the vid card..it got like..1-maybe..3 fps lol..i was a tank)

Really its just used to like idle..in irc/ventrillo...and somen i can grab up when im mobile...but haven some games to play is always a need. ...really only thing i NEED is to get this damn mangler workin -_- ..haven shitty luck... pidgin dont even wanna work rofl...some g_strmp error..but meh... if i really need to sign into my msn..theres always meebo...or i can just get some other im client.

just gotta get me some good roms on here..n64 runs like balls...which is the shitty intel 945's fault......so i doubt psx will work...so i'll be reduced to snes or some sega..but thats cool.. I also put puppyarcade on my main pc..(i had to..fucked my bootloader for winblowz :/ ) Its a pent4 duelcore..2.4ghz..2gig ram..still a shitty intel 865g -_- 3d only...havent tested anything with it but i might.
