cpu high temperature

I got an alert for high cpu temperature just after start of Quirk 1.1, hardinfo showed 83*C, the cpu fan was not running. I tried to put acpi=on on kernel boot line, with random result ( one time the fan started to run).
The same problem in Lupu5.
I checked Puppy4.32, found same problem, but when the temperature reached 85°C, fan started to cool down until 65°C and since then seemed working fine.
With acpi=off fans are always running.
So may be the problem was existing on previous Puppy versions too, but I haven't noticed it. It seem that fan regulator is working on higher range
than XP and Ubuntu 10.04 that show no problems.
On XP temperature are about 45/50°C in the situation and fan start run from those values going up.

HP-Compaq 6735s, AMD AMD Turion(tm)X2 Dual Core Mobile RM-70, BIOS Information> Version 68GPP Ver. F.0D.

Congratulations for the developpers of both: Quirky and Lupu.

I have this issue with quirky, not with Lucid.
I have acpi=on. The fan starts, but maybe not early enough.
This started in quirky some 4 releases ago. Didn't have that earlier.
As in Lucid there is no temp indicator in the tray, difficult to follow, but there is almost no need for the fan to run. (at least I hope so)

Lucid it's ok

you're right.
On Lupu5, fan is working, changing speed, between 60-70°C as seen in menu/system/system status/hardinfo/sensors,
Boot option acpi=on.
so the problem is on quirky 1.1.

acpi and cpu Temperature

I have this problem with my laptop with an Intel dual core centrino processor. The acpi program does not recognize this centrino and uses the generic program. I use lighthouse mariner, so I have a temp monitor in the tray. If I start and go the temp goes to 85C and the cpu turns the fan on full, so I start and go to 40-45C, then shut down and reboot. Puppy comes up with the fan on low and it stays there, holding temp between 22C and 36C, depending how much I have going. 4.3.1 Seamonkey does the same, except no monitor in tray, so I go 5 min. and then reboot to get fan. Acpi seems to not be able to turn the fan on, or change it.
I haven't tried lupu 5 yet.

cpu scaling

I noticed that cpu temp is higher in Puppy (pc idle, temp=60°C) than in XP (pc idle, temp=45°C) (amb temp=21°C). I use also Ubuntu Ultimate edition that works as XP.
Anyway, I enabled Powernow k8, (my cpu is AMD Athlon dual core) from cpu scaling menu and temp now seems much better.
Bye.

I'm getting unusually high CPU readings on my p4 laptop. It usually runs 46-55c in 4.31 and now it never goes below 63c in Quirky 1.2 and has triggered the warning popup at 71c a few times now. Also I can't configure CPU Freq. None of the modules will load. I have no problem in 4.31 with this.

To watch temps., you can use system > hardinfo > sensors.

All these latest versions seem to be running 10 to 20c higher
than the 4.xx Puppies.

Just curious, :?: Have any of you guys tried quirky retro, qret-110 or qret-112 with the older kernel-2.6.30.5?

I'm running qret-110 on an everex SA2053T. It requires a special modded intird.gz and 8139too module so I just used the initrd.gz and /lib/modules/2.6.30.5/ that I have been running in puppy-431.

Both qret-110 and pup-431 climb to 61c, the fan comes on and temp drops down to 49c and starts climbing back to 61c again, identical behaviour.

Maybe this is kernel related?

I tried it briefly; don't remember if I checked for temps on it, so I'll
give it another test.

Quirky had the fastest temp rise of any I tried.
Playing a video file or dvd lead to the running hot warning quite
rapidly.

I have to take back what I said above. Just rebooted from pup-431 to qret-110 and walked away. Came back to find thermal warning message "temp is very high". First time I've ever seen that message. Checked sensor and its at 72c and climbing. Went to 76c before the fan kicked in. Dropped to 50c and the fan kicked out.

Currently cycling between 50-61c.

I wonder if Quirky is actually running hotter or if its temperature sensing mechanism is calibrated differently.

If Quirky is still using my traytemp utility - keep in mind I made up the temperatures at which it warns you.

You need to research what the acceptable temperature range is for your cpu and adjust the warning thresholds accordingly.

Okay; tried Qret-110. Same problem as regular kernel Quircky and
the Puppy 5 lupu-luci versions.
Gxine player in latter takes a little more time to go over 70c; the
point at which Quirky gives the high temp warning.

I use "hard info>sensors" as reference.

With Xp resting at desktop, the normal temp is 53c on this 700m
Inspiron.
Using Vlc on my 4.1.2 install, and playing a dvd or video file at almost
full screen; the temp actually drops to 49 to 52c.

The fan works with any version running, and I use cpu scaling.

edit:
Lupu 501 will maintain 54c at desktop with fan gently blowing.
4.1.2 will maintain 53-54c without fan coming on.

On my one Athlon machine, traytemp doesn't start up - it seg faults. Is this because it was written for Intel Atom processors on netbooks?

Damn Jemimah, my laptop gets hot to touch with quirky, never mind warnings, common sense says get out there :)

I'm not suggesting that quirky doesn't get hot, just that the warning thresholds are arbitrary.

I believe quirky kernel defaults to "performance" when cpu-freq scaling is enabled. You'll want to make sure it's to "ondemand".

Regarding segfaults, I'm fairly sure Barry recompiled it before putting it in Quirky. The segfault is probably caused by something else.

If I recall correctly qret-110 uses the same kernel version as 4.31 so maybe it is a module / config issue then?

Will powertop run on quirky?
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=31290

That should be able to tell you what the problem is.

Does'nt seem to be a frequency scaling module that works with my pentium dual core T2330, they all report 'fail' on trying to implement them though 4.3* is fine, as is Lupu.
